DLAW just needs to look in the mirror and decide what he wants. Does he want to focus on his stupid merch line etc...OR does he love the game enough and his craft, to hone his skills with the mindset it takes to be great? If he has a good game again this week against a team like ZONA, then we can start getting excited. Til then...I am skeptical. Jaylon just needs to develop a meanstreak and the mindset to sniff out plays using instincts. He did that last week. If he does it again this week, we have something to be excited about.

Smith looked great against the giants......

Lawerence looked great too

But the defense as a whole still looked below average which is a major step up from being non existent

What was different?

DEs playing the scheme rather than trying to defend the run on the way to the QB.
That could be. Old habits die hard.

As far as Jaylon, an enigma beyond belief.

It's like he has mental issues and sometimes knows how to play and sometimes completely forgets. Never seen anything like it....I don't think its effort related.

He certainly has the potential to be great, and has shown it in the past. Thats what been so frustrating since he signed that contract extension.

He deserves 100% of the criticism he has received recently, but all will be forgotten if he can continue to perform at a high level.

Lbs look out of place when DEs aren't doing their jobs. DEs are supposed to play contain in the run game but they were crashing the middle to try to make something happen.

Lb will always look out of position when the guys ahead of him don't direct the play as they are supposed to. We saw way more discipline from Lawrence and Griffen (Smith, I think is designated to freelance and harass the QB). Runner funnels to Smith. Smith looks totally different but he's likely in exactly the same place he was week 4.

Best game in awhile for sure, but he has to start stacking good games on top of good games. He's been so bad and so inconsistent at times, you still have no idea what you are getting game to game from him.

Yep.

He had plenty of bad snaps against the Giants too. The only difference this game was that he had some positive plays for the first time in a while.

I dont really know how to attempt to explain it TBH.

The only possible thing I can think of is that....nah that's not even it.

I don't really know. He seems to be headed backward more often than not.

it looked like he was actually trying and gave a damn for once.

Eh, good game but we will see if it's sustainable. Seems like him and Lawrence always play well vs. the Giants historically

LOL. He had "some positive plays" like 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The surest sign of a dumb person is when they lock into a narrative and can't admit they are wrong.

Its not a mental issue if you transition to a complicated defense without a preseason and you a LB that has to cover for assignment breakdowns. Smith could have picked up the new defense faster but its no coincidence that Smith keeps improving as the rest of the defense settles into the new defense and blows fewer assignments.

I was happy with Jaylon this past game, did a great job of breaking up the screen passes that NY was trying to run on Dallas. I really hope to see this continue
Nantz & Romo kept pointing out how he was sniffing out those screen plays well.

He really was *ON* this game. I'd be curious to hear what happened. Maybe it was just a bad Giants O, or maybe Anthony Brown in the 2ndary made enough of a difference? I dunno...

he said Deion spent more time in his room going over tape and looking for any edge he could find.
exactly. there aren't any prohibitions on how much the guys can study together or on their own to make sure everyone understands how they will function as a unit.

It was an encouraging sight, I feel like Jaylon ALMOST ALWAYS plays hard (except for the OBJ reverse TD)

However, let's not get it twisted - we played against the pitiful Giants offense...which might be just as bad as our defense.

I think main part is being ready as the play begins to develop. LB has keys he is looking for on any given play and you have to trust your eyes and allow your instincts to take over. You hesitate or play with uncertainty then that wall on the screen forms and the RB has the blockers to run behind. The play needs to be blown up before they are set, in the cases of the screen Jaylon did just that.
