If Tannehill can do it, why not Dalton

There is absolutely no evidence to support that conclusion, but you're entitled to feel however you like about either of them.

There is a ton of evidence to support it. Dalton led his teams to the playoffs many years. Tannehill was a bust and couldn’t pull his team out of the mire.

Dalton was a legit starter in Cincy.

And failed to win a single playoff game, had seasons with 16, 17 and 20 picks and twice led the league in fumbles by a QB. People talk about turnovers that Prescott has, Dalton is much worse.

He is what we have. If you prefer to urinate in your cereal before you eat it, that’s your right. I am going to hope for the best and root for him, the same as I did for Dak.

Look you can decide to make stats to look like anything, but we should all read more about CPOE in regards to evaluate QB's. I've been spending a lot of time learning about CPOE (Completion Percentage Above Expected). But, I would argue that Tannehil is in the top 10 of NFL QB's based on advanced analytics. I would argue that Dalton and Dak are in the middle of the road.

If you look at CPOE with regards to how we want our QB's to perform:
1. Being precise and accurate regards to easy throws (Y axis in the above graph for % Bad Misses)
2. Ability to make a big throw when the situation calls for it (X axis % Big throws)

don't always agree with you but generally understand where you are coming from but on this I'm afraid you have a bad take.

I watch most Titans games. He has a top notch arm and very accurate (as in super impressive). they take quite a lot of deep shots & he drops dimes into the receivers hands.

I'm not saying he's elite and he did not play great in the playoffs. But the talent is clearly there, I'm going to chalk that up to first time nerves.

Dude had a rookie WR over 1000 and average 20 yards a catch.
I concur. He takes quite a few deep shots.
People see his name and think of years hurt in Miami and last year's
playoffs watching Derrick Henry run over everyone.
Fact is, his game is a lot like Dak's.
He has games with gawdy numbers.
He can run. Very similar player, actually.

Tannhil is better. I argue that if he has another two years on his current trajectory....he is a top 5 QB. Tannehil can make the big throws and deep shots like Dak. But, Tannehil has consistency. He doesn't have those misses on those easy passes like Dak does occasionally that kills drives or leaves points on the board while making us fans slapping ourselves.

I'd agree Tannehill is better.
I almost added that, if he were here in place of Dalton,
we'd be better off. But didn't want to lay out bait for the
hyenas who actually know nothing about him.

The person you quoted is a super Dak fan so anything positive is looked at as a shot at Dak. You have to excuse the lad.

just had to look up the ages and they are the same age, have had a similar career path ie numbers are very close etc

knowing that Tannehill was all but labeled a JAG, close to bust, never going to be a winner or star and yet the Tians go insert him change the game plan to more run oriented smart football with great defense and hes all of a sudden resurrected his career..

Why Not Dalton, i know maybe not here but if somehow it happened where he plays above average here and we somehow salvage this season and big maybe on Daks status and future given the injury and contract up in the air,

he has a few good years left and could bridge the Cowboys to the next young QB, maybe Nooch..who knows..

just watching RT go to a afccg after his first stop was a failure and now has his team 4-0 , why not Dalton?

its not that big of stretch and i know the entire volume of responses is we dont have that kind of defense, not yet is the answer.. lets just focus on our offense because thats all he can control..

wonder what MM is truly thinking these if AD has a very high grade to end this season..

lots of options are at our disposal because you tag Dak with Non franchise and take offers on trade if AD is deemed good enough to lead for few years while preparing the next guy..

If you dont get the offers you like and Dak and his agent finally see hes not getting better offers maybe deal is struck and this becomes MOOT..

just spit balling over coffee.

Unless Dalton shows that he can put up similar numbers to Dak in this offense, he's not the best quarterback to lead this team even if we lean on the run game and build a strong defense. Although some teams have won Super Bowls with average talent at quarterback, it is not the easiest route.

If Dalton plays above average here (better overall than he did in Cincy), but at a lower level than Prescott, then I'd rather take my chances with Prescott. Quarterbacks who have played at Prescott's level are hard to find. If Dalton shows he can play at that level in the same offense, then credence needs to be given that the offense is mostly responsible for the level of play.

I don't think that will be the case. I think Dalton will play well, but at a rung lower than Dak. With the defense we have and the division we're in, that might be enough to get us to the playoffs again, but no further. Then, we sign Dak and try to build this team around the better quarterback.

A lot of hate for Tannehill in this thread. I’m going to assume these are mostly Cowboys homers who don’t watch much NFL outside of our home team.

Quite simply, Tannehill has been an outright stud everywhere he has been given the chance. This year he’s thrown 9 TDs to 1 pick with a 68.9% completion rating. It’s not an anomaly, last year he threw for 22 TDs and 6 picks in 12 regular season games, and he wasn’t too shabby in Miami.

I can’t tell you if Dalton is as good because, other than his rookie year, he never really had neither the weapons nor the coaching. We will know soon enough because here in Dallas he has both.

Here is his draft profile from 2011, and I think they pretty much nailed it.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/643144-andy-dalton-2011-nfl-draft-scouting-report

Dalton’s strength as a passer is his accuracy. He consistently places the ball in an area that only his receiver can make the catch and does a great job leading the receiver and giving him room to run after the catch.

During his pro day workout Dalton showed excellent accuracy to every area of the field. There are questions about his deep accuracy, largely related to arm strength. He will get a little high throwing outside but this can be corrected with better timing coming out under center. Dalton has NFL-ready accuracy.

Arm strength

There are questions about his ability to push the ball up-field. He threw passes of 60 yards in the air during pro day, but this was in shorts and without wind. Dalton will not be a big-arm quarterback in a vertical system. He has the arm strength to throw go routes and out patterns but relies more on timing to make his throws. The ball will float down the seam too often.

Dalton has the strength to throw with zip and get the ball between defenders. As a West Coast Offense passer, he would excel due to his ability to fit the ball in tight spaces on short and intermediate routes. Despite not having the strongest arm, he does show nice touch on deep balls.

So obviously Dak is a superior player in so many ways, but accuracy is one spot where I believe that Dalton will be better. He consistently puts the ball where the receiver can catch it in stride and get those YACs.

Why won’t the cowboys make the NFCCG? Because they don’t have a defense. The titans have a very good defense. That’s the main reason they are having so much success. Tannehill is playing well.

is it possible dalton plays well in Dak’s absence? Sure. It could happen.

I will say this. If Dalton does have a revival. Like Tannehill did..... look at the contract that Tannehill then got. Like 29 mil per season.

that’s only like 6-8 less per year than Dak.

do you want Dalton over Dak if the cap savings is only 6-8?

Dalton being a “bridge” option depends on a lot of factors. 1. Dalton playing well. 2. If dalton does play very well, him wanting to sign a “discount” deal where the savings makes sense over a younger QB like Dak.

There’s a lot of variables here.

Dinucci is not a realistic long term option. The chance of him being a good QB is less than 1%

If the cowboys do move on for a rookie or young QB. I don’t want bargain basement chad hutchinsons or drew Henson’s.

cowboys gotta use a premium pick to maximize the chance or finding a good QB.

We shall see what happens.

Also I'm pretty sure the Cowboys don't have the cap space to sign Dalton to a franchise level contract while also tagging Dak in order to trade him.

7 points from their defense. Not from the offense, to be clear.
7 points from a very short field. Most bad offense should be able to do that.
9 points from 3 FG's of over 50 yards. I guess the defense held, but a very good K can overcome that.

So the offense gets a FG, a TD and a 2 point conversion. And those drives were helped by the defense being stupid with penalties.

So the 34 points narrative is not really what it seems. True, overall they gave up 27 points, so at least try to be correct with the actual points given up.

Remember as well that two tds for the Giants were called back due to penalties.

Then Dalton has to be no lower than 68% rest of way if he is better.

I'm going to HOPE for the best but I also don't fool myself into thinking that Dalton is as good as Prescott and doesn't have a history of turning the ball over much more often that Prescott in his worse season. BTW I don't eat cereal nor do I think like a 5 year old kid by suggesting that someone would urinate in their cereal.

And that accuracy is what got him seasons with 14, 16, 17 and 20 picks. Ya tell us all about his accuracy again. Oh and those 2 passes to Gallup, if Gallup hadn't made some really great athletic circus catches and another pass that going into the turf that had to dive to catch it and if that's what you're calling so accurate and putting the ball where the receiver can catch it in stride than you need some really strong glasses or sober up
