This comes from Blogging the Boys.

This is extremely unnerving. When we discuss these two guys plus we add Lee into the mix..

It's just no wonder the DL does not get much help and the secondary is just a lick and a promise.

Yikes.

It's completely stunning that we went from 2018 to this. It wasn't like Smith and LVE played like hall of famers in 2018 but my god, the drop off over two years has been stunning. Smith's drop off has been ridiculous. He went from good in 2018 to a really poor LB (granted there were signs last year he was trending this way). LVE gets a pass mostly and he should probably praise the Lord Smith is on the team since it takes eyeballs away from him and his play.

PS - The comment about Lawrence in coverage is priceless. Another reason why Nolan has to go. He's trying to fit square pegs into round holes. I bet Lawrence has dropped into coverage more times in 7 games this year than he has in the previous 3 years combined.

Posted yesterday that those two are something I cant even come close to figuring out.

It makes very little sense....I'm thinking Jerry did actually sell his soul for 95....

Guess he figured that was only really a 20 year penalty.

Nope.

He certainly thinks it's real.
Just ask him. He's not shy about it.

You have two finesse backers who excel when they're told to just attack. Don't think, just attack. But you're asking them to sit back and read and react. One guy has no lateral mobility, so he's already behind the ball on any "react" plays. The other has great instincts, but has absolutely no ability to get off blocks and often runs himself out of plays.

They have to give Jaylon and LVE set responsibility on every single play. One of them should probably be blitzing on every play, the problem is that means the other is probably covering.

I think if it was just Jaylon, or just LVE, they could be schemed into playing well and making lots of splash plays. The issue is whoever is left to read/react IS going to blow it every single time.

I believe LVE and Jaylon can be successful together. I believe they can be formidable together. For that to happen, however, this defense needs a dramatic makeover. I know everyone wants fat guys in the middle, but it's more delicate than that. Dallas needs an intelligent penetrating DT who doesn't guess wrong. They need that DT to make the calls back to the LBs so they know which gap he's hitting, so they know their assignments.

Whats happening in the Dallas defense is a critical failure on every level. Not enough talent. Poor scheming. Poor coaching. Not putting players in position to take advantage of their strengths. Poor skill pairings. The whole defense is trash, top to bottom.

I think it's going to take at least two years to field a strong defense. They have to decide on an identity and scheme and then get the talent for it.

The article ends by saying “It’s crazy how these coaches are choosing to use their players.”

Pretty much. Will never understand the unwillingness of coaches to alter and tweak their schemes week to week based on the opponent’s weaknesses.

We only have 20+ seasons of watching Belichik do that very thing and have top 5 defenses year in and year out.

it won’t take 2 years

here is what is needed and can be easily accomplished in 1 year

1. get a young and aggressive DC
2. Get 2 real DTs at 1 and 3T. Really good lunch pail guys not bottom of the barrel
3. Get 2 real safeties. One of them should be a real ball hawk

we have the other pieces

You realize that is asking for A LOT in one offseason, right? Tell me another time a defense brought in four new high level starters and it worked. That would be a masterful offseason. In other words, no way that's happening in Dallas. Even if they let Dak walk I don't trust the FO to spend that money right.

WE need to draft some LBERS
We do, but we also probably should cool it on treating 4-3 linebacker like a premium position we have to be spending 1st rounders and early 2nd rounders on.

Not that there aren't exceptions to any rule of thumb, but it's wild to me that we've treated the position like it's an equal priority (or sometimes greater) than defensive backs and pass-rushers. Jerry knew way back in the mid- and late-90s that 4-3 linebackers are the easiest position to fill. That if he had to go cheap somewhere on defense to afford his costly corner or pass-rusher, the linebacker spot was the place to do it. And somehow he's unlearned that lesson. We've skimped on secondary players and the pass-rush and gotten more obsessed with 4-3 linebackers even as the league has gotten more pass-happy, putting even more importance on secondary guys who cover and d-linemen who rush the passer. And even with this fetishization of linebackers, our run defense is terrible anyway.

Put an Anthony Hitchens and a Damien Wilson in at linebacker for us today and we're better off than we are with our 1st rounder and early 2nd rounder flailing around out there. And those two guys were generic 4th or 5th round picks.

I wish people knew the importance of Dline play and how it can be a benefit or a detriment to the rest of the defense.
It begins and ends with the line on offense and defense. What good is it to have three great receivers and a $100 million dollar running back if the line can’t block? Pretty worthless as we saw last week. Same thing with the defense. What good is the secondary and linebackers if the defensive line is awful. Pretty worthless. Teams just run it down our throat until the secondary bites on the run (because the line can’t stop it) and then they burn us with a deep pass. It’s like a pop warner coach is scheming this defense.

I have hope for the offensive line. But the defensive line needs a infusion of talent. Especially at defensive tackle.

They need a new defensive coordinator as well. Nolan needs to give his money back. The read and react scheme for defensive linemen is horrendous. Find a guy who is hungry and innovative. I cannot forgive MM for this abomination on defense. The cronyism in NFL coaching is awful.

DLaw only drops onto coverage when they play 3-4.

They only play 3-4 on run downs.

Summary:
A couple of times per game DLaw drops into coverage on run downs usually covering the RB.

There have been many problems on defense. DLaw dropping into coverage a small number of times is not one of them.
