I think that you well illustrate the point that this team - even as currently built - can turn things around in a hurry. If the injured offensive players come back and play to their past standards, this offense can quickly and easily get back to scoring 35 points a game - which they were with Dak. When you have that, all you need is competent defense to win games. I don't feel it requires reinventing the wheel, or totally rebuilding the defense, in order to accomplish that.
I can see that as logical. But I can’t get past the problem with Ty Smith. Hope I’m wrong, but I think he’s done. He’s been so great for so long I think too many of our fans take the LT position for granted.

If Smith either isn’t back next year, or is only back at say 50% of what he once was, coupled with the weakness at LG, our whole left side of the OL is a problem. That doesn’t mean the whole offense will be bad, but it does make the idea that this offense is a juggernaut come into question a little in my mind.

No injuries to any players this squad would be 8-8 or 9-7
Don't see it! MM needs more than one season cleaning up a decade of Garrett's mess.

Jimmy Johnson only won one game when taking over the franchise in '89.

We just need to revamp the defense and bring in a new DC.

Assuming the core of our OL and Dak returns healthy we have a top 5 offense. If they can stop turning the ball over. Which they hadn’t done in recent history.

Focus the draft and FA on defense , primarily DT , LB and S, and perhaps a LT.

An average to slightly below average defense with our healthy offense could win back the division. That’s not a total rebuild.

Cracks me up how the r-word seems to scare the crap out of some fans. Call it a "rebuild" or not, the team's strengths and weaknesses are the same.

Top 5 offense is generous, simply because they've been too inconsistent. Lighting up bad teams and struggling with good ones is a stretch to call top 5.

Defense is garbage. It's been almost 20 since years since it has been a strength, despite a few decent years, and most of the time it's a liability. It's the biggest reason we haven't seen any sort of championship game in that time.

Comparing the team MM inherited to the one Jimmy inherited is the kind of stretch that can cause injury. Be careful.

I think that's a situation where we have to cross that bridge when we come to it. If and when Smith decides to retire, we can lament that fact and talk about options. But, as of today, there is every indication that he will return in 2021. Not to say that they do not to look into better options for both now and the long run, they do. Even if Smith does return, his history of injury makes having a capable backup a necessity.

But the fact is that Smith played in just two games this year with Dak, and the offense still managed to average 36 points a game.

As I said on another thread we have 3-5 keepers on each side of the ball, 2-14 would not surprise.

Without fan glasses:

Oline has two great tackles, one we cant depend on, one who hopefully will be ok. We've got Martin, we've got a very promising rookie Center and we have some great depth. Overall I still believe this oline can be above average

WR are probably the best in the business

TE has been better than expected. An upgrade could be nice, but Schultz and Jarwin can get the job done

QB stud

RB I have a difficult time assessing Zeke anymore. Im very biased against him, but when the oline is halfway healthy and Dak is spreading the field out Zeke is a very good rb. That said he seems to have lost focus and hes definitely lost a step.

Offense overall is superbowl worthy when we aren't ravaged with injuries.

Defense is another story. I feel like we can be ok with Dlaw and hopefully Gregory. I believe Diggs has a ton of potential. Maybe LVE can be good when he has a better cast around him, maybe 2018 was a fluke for him as well.

The rest of our defense is comprised of role players and over paid chumps. Im not speaking of the guys on one year deals because its doubtful any of them return.

I dont buy the 4 year turn around nonsense. We need an influx of defensive talent and we need to stay half way healthy. This team isn't without hope in the near future but this draft and offseason is critical and we have to get rid of some dead weight.

Despite our glaring needs on defense, LT might be an even higher priority in the draft. I totally agree with you that while Tyron has been an absolute stud, we can't rely on him playing a full schedule anymore.

The problem is how the FO looks at them and if you want to change a W to a S for them, put a Star on that player's helmet. They actually believe every player wants to be a Cowboy and will play better once he is.

The issue with these contracts for Elliott, Lawrence, J. Smith and even Cooper goes back to one of the dumbest things I've ever heard Booger say and there are many to choose from but I do think he believes it because it's a basic tenet of business.

Right after Romo got his last contract, Booger was asked about the level of it and his response was "he's getting paid better, he'll play better". I think he believes that is the incentive. He pays them more and expects more based solely on that. He expects them to raise their level of play up to meet the salary. If he wants them to be an A player, he needs to pay them an A salary.

But that's a minor problem compared to the real one, ego. One of the real payoffs for his ego is when a risk pays off like a 2nd and 3rd for Lawrence, Elliot at 4 going against the grain or Smith in the 2nd. How else can anyone explain that Smith contract after watching him and knowing he will never even be at his college level again?

Booger tries to prove he was right by doubling down. He makes the mistake that 30 other owners do not make, he lets hi ego get involved with his business and as long as that continues, this franchise's woes continue.

Atlanta has allowed 30+ points 4 times already this season, as have the Browns - Cincinnati did it twice. Seattle has done so 3 times. The only time the Dak-led offense didn't break 30? The Rams. They've only allowed one team to reach 30 points. We saw similar performances last season.

Thinking this offense is going to "easily" put up 35 each week seems a tad unrealistic to me. The days they don't are almost always losses. That's how you top out at 8-8 or 9-7.

Fair point Stas. How would you do it differently?
Despite our glaring needs on defense, LT might be an even higher priority in the draft. I totally agree with you that while Tyron has been an absolute stud, we can't rely on him playing a full schedule anymore.

If the value at LT is equal to or greater than a defensive player, I'd have no issues in going that route.

Yep, as much as they need help all over the D, that LT spot is the most critical. Followed by LG. Weakest part of the OL on the left side with a right handed QB might be a problem.

And that speaks to the atrocious defense. If you have to score 35 points or better to have even a chance to win, your defense sucks.

with all the injuries...we're not.
but when healthy...i still think this is a talented roster.
had Dak not gotten hurt...i believe we aren't 2-5 right now.

They took BPA last time and I think that was a mistake. Those WR's don't matter if they don't have a good LT and Big Smitty has worn down.

I disagree with you brother. Ty Smith was my favorite Cowboys player for years. He was an absolute beast. But he hasn’t played a full season since 2015. By the end of this season he will have missed 27 games. One of the most underrated abilities with all players is availability, and Smith has lost that lately. I’m sad to say, he has become a weakness.
.
Has anyone heard whether he actually had the surgery? If so, it’s possible that he could come back better than he’s been in years (and it’s possible he will never come back).

i was wrong about griffen and poe.
im glad this team acknowledged their mistakes and moved on.
i hope Anae gets more snaps moving forward and i hope we get to see Reggie Robinson.
i am still excited about Randy Gregory being back....i like our DE group despite the low sack numbers.
Dorance Armstrong looks improved to me.
i like our 2 young DTs Neville Gallimore and Hamilton.
i hope we add 2 more in the draft.
i like Donovan Wilson...the more experience he gets the better.
im very disappointed with Xavier Woods...i thought by now he'd be better.
this is a spot i hope we address in the draft.
love Trevon Diggs.
be glad when Awuzie comes back.
i like the Awuzie,Diggs,Brown trio at CB.
im still a Lewis fan but he's been disappointing.
i would move Robinson back to CB and give him some game reps...lets see what we got.
