How good is McClay in such player evaluations? Poe , Conner , Taco , etc etc . Why is he so highly praised when all we see is lack of talent
IIRC McClay reportedly graded TJ Watt higher but was ultimately overruled by Marinelli.

Poe was once a good player who was worth a kick of the tires. It didn't work.

Williams represents a scouting failure but I don't know how much we know about McClay's involvement there.

From 2010-2019, 7 out of 9 first round picks have made the pro bowl at some point. That's a great hit rate. The exceptions were Charlton, which can be attributed to Marinelli, and Morris Claiborne.

Heyward is a beast. There should have been RB to chip up on that play. I would have had Gilbert roll away from the pocket.

Looney should have been helping out Williams more but he never to seldom helps out the LG, ..but more so helps Zack Martin for whatever reason .

Did I see some reference in a thread that said Connor Williams is hurt/out?

Yea exactly. It's pure fantasy to think that we're going to hit on all our picks. Our drafts are the only decent thing about this team really. People must have forgotten about the 'special teams draft' and other draft debacles prior to McClay

if this is true , then basically the blame is on Marinelli and Jerry . Th JJ Watt miss is amazing . I think marinalli also wanted Trysten .which remains to be evaluated fully.

Am also assuming Jerry wanted to draft zeke 4th as well.

sorry he is OT
I have zero idea why they won’t move him to tackle. Give it a shot.
So....the evaluation of Williams - a two-time All-American OT in college- to project him as suitable to move to OG in the NFL..plus select him in the 2nd round \no. 50 overall to boot --was a big mistake?
Or did the knee injury Conner suffered his Junior season at Texas significantly reduced his ability to improve at the pro level --and the Cowboys' scouting and \ or draft room overlooked-ignored this?

Yeah I geniuely have zero idea what the hype around him was

His NFL draft profile was literally "Great Freshman year, SOPHMORE SLUMP, and then injured Junior year. IF he can stay healthy and IF he can switch positions and IF he can return to freshman form he could be a good NFL starter".

That's literally the draft profile of a 4th or 5th rounder, not a top 50 pick........
Regardless of whether his draft selection should have been lower due to his injury and projected switch to guard...
Williams was one of four offensive tackles selected as Consensus All-American for the 2016 season ----hardly a 'sophmore slump'.

dont tell that to the experts here they know more then any coach or gm ever assembled..i mean they watch the games they must be experts..
Yeah I know some people are just too smart for their own good. I won’t sit here and say Conned is a great football player but his play doesn’t warrant a thread calling him out. This place is just wierd.

Connor has a pff grade of a 69.9...the second highest grade on our offensive line.
To be fair a top 50 pick grading out better than an injured center and 2 undrafted rookie tackles isn't really something that's worth bragging about.

That's like saying don't pick on Crawford because he's the highest rated interior lineman on defense

It's one of those context matters.

It's not weird when you factor in 1. Where he was drafted 2. It was a questionable pick even at the time and 3. Both of the previous LGs where better performance, cheaper salary, and no draft picks spent.

Alot of the Connor hate is more just displeasure of the front office thinking there smarter than they really are, especially with these 2nd round picks that they seem to always miss on (D-law is really the only legimate 2nd round franchise guy they've hit on in the last 7 or 8 years).
