Worth mentioning that Dalton's two bad starts coincided with Zack Martin missing time.

Comparing Gilbert's results playing behind a much better line (we had Martin and Looney back, so he was playing behind only 2 backups who weren't supposed to be starting this season) against Dalton's results playing behind a worse line (once Zack Martin went out, Dalton was playing behind a whopping 4 backups) is a flawed way of looking at it. It's like comparing Gilbert's ceiling against Dalton's floor. Gilbert's passer rating playing behind only 2 backups was only 72. I'm certain if you look at Dalton's passer rating in the Giants game and the beginning of the Cardinals game before Martin got hurt, it's EASILY better than 72.

DiNucci had the benefit of Martin returning to action for his start, so he has no real excuse. He's lost in the tall grass, clearly. He's not even part of this discussion. And, frankly, he's the only QB in the group now whose playing might result in wasted development time for Lamb, our most important offensive prospect right now, so even if we were inclined to play DiNucci just to tank, we'd be doing so with the understanding that it might cost Lamb a solid half a season of productive development and growth.

I'm not opposed to switching to Gilbert despite the strong chance Dalton performs better behind our line with Martin back. Dalton should have no future here, given how much of a luxury it is to have a veteran backup making decent money. Gilbert, even though he's not really young (he's almost 30, right?), is still younger and cheaper than Dalton, so he might plausibly have a future here as a cheaper backup. I'd be fine with the team wanting to see more from him as an audition to be our new backup moving forward.

I strongly suspect that Stephen is merely intent upon honoring the language in Dalton's contract. In other words a deal is a deal -- but if he were actually interested in winning games, I think he'd seriously consider going with Garrett Gilbert as his main backup. We'll likely see for sure where Gilbert stands in the offseason and beyond next year. If Stephen knows anything at all, he'll consider GG for his #1 backup in 2021. We'll see about that next year. In any case, Andy Dalton might be a candidate as a starter somewhere else next year, assuming he's fortunate enough to do so.

The eye test solidifies this.

Garrett Gilbert looked much better with this same Cowboys Offense than what Andy Dalton & Ben DiNucci have this season, plus Cooper Rush the past several seasons.

Gilbert should be the starting QB for the next game, not Dalton. Obviously, Jerry and Stephen are favoring Dalton to start because he is costing them much more to be on the team.

If we're going according to performance and how they were able to carry the Offense, shouldn't Garrett Gilbert be starting?

What say you?

Gilbert seems like a very nice fit here and has some moxy and coolness about him and moves really well in the pocket with his spacing. It also seemed like he wanted to win the game in a football sense. That also means Jerry may get rid of him since he can actually play (did I say Jerry?) yes coach Jones.

Because a lot of guys like gilbert never get a chance to start a game. Unless there is a injury that forces them to start you , you just hold the clipboard
and eventually you get cut, and someone else picks you up and then it is a repeat.
Yeah -- what's not to like! I'm excited as heck about what he did vs. the Steelers! That was quite a performance he had.
The one thing that gives me pause to wondering is that he's been bounced around almost as much as a ping-pong ball. :omg:

If kellen and Tony dont both get hurt dak might have rode the bench, and at some point be traded, or waived, or still be riding the bench
as a 4th round unknown bkup. Dak got a big break and made the most of it.
Gibert made a good showing, but now jones boys want him back on the bench, as they dont want a qb controversy, or maybe they want to lose,
or maybe they are just really stupid lol I dont know which one. But if GG got to play 2 more games and looked good, win or lose,
he would be getting offers for a # 2 bkup job somewhere, and possibly someone might see him as a starter.

Heck Tomlin might grab him as a # 2 and potential successor to Ben.
A lot of guys just dont ever get that chance to start a real game, just how it is in NFL.

I'm sure it's fair to say he's had exposure now and pretty good exposure, at that. I'd like to see Dallas get him but we'll see if SJ is inclined to claim and activate him? Now that he's seen such successful exposure, he's anyone's QB, as long as he remains inactive on our PS. I'm hoping he'll get the opportunity to be tested further by the Cowboys but of course other teams can take him as long as he's not on our active roster on on the PS.

Such is life in the NFL. I'm sure he'll be there for anyone to pilfer him. I'll just be hoping that Stephen decides to activate him before others do. Otherwise, he'll be available for any team that covets him. If he's as good as he looked vs. Pittsburgh on an ongoing basis, he might be worth keeping. I'm sure Dalton wants to start if another team wants him in 2021. It won't be the Cowboys, since Dak is "our guy," as our FO has already insisted he is. ;)

And maybe more than one game
He’s played much more football than Nooch so I would expect him to be better but one game sure doesn’t say he’s better than dalton
Yea the only thing it really says is that he is a capable NFL QB if the defense has not had a chance to prepare for him. Which honestly is ideal for a 2nd or 3rd string QB. Hope he sticks around after this season.

OMG, not the eye test...didn't people here claim we would be fine with Dalton after he played 1/3 of the giants game....touting stats left and right.

now after one game, we declare Gilbert is it....there is a reason this guy in 7 years never played an NFL game and threw his first TD ever and was playing in the AAF.....

not saying he sucks, but they all suck. the millimeter difference between all of them is negligible, as they are all at the bottom of the barrell....

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree w/ your last sentence.
