What is wrong with tanking?

It establishes a losing culture. Once you ask someone to tank you cannot ask that same person to come back and play hard. Tanking will always end up undermining management.

No one is asking players to lose.
Coaches do it via inserted personnel, game strategy, plays called etc.
Blimey! How long you been watching the NFL.

Ethics in football went out the door around the time plastic helmets replaced leather helmets.

Holla and brings me a dollah!
Or holla and just owe me a dollar!

Harder to turn an NFL team around with one player. The Colts were great until Peyton went down with a neck injury. They finished 2-14 in 2011 and drafted Luck who was one of the best quarterback prospects in the past 35 years. Even he did not overcome a lack of good players around him finishing 3 consecutive 11-5 seasons.

Its also more difficult to scout or develop an idea of the sole players you are tanking for. Fewer games make it difficult to gauge whether a player will be a useful addition or even NFL ready.

And the 16 game schedule makes it harder to tank. Smaller sample sizes mean larger variances down the road. Its easy for a mediocre team to look good over a short span as it is for a good team to struggle and look terrible. So its much harder to tank in the NFL given a 16 game schedule than baseball with 162 games or basketball with 82. The 2016 World Series Cubs went 103 and 58, but who would have picked them as champs during their worst stretch of 5-15? The 2017 Jets looked ready to go 0-16. Instead, they went 5-11 and had to make a trade to move up in the draft and get Sam Darnold.

There is also a safety component. If an NFL team puts out a subpar offensive line, people will get hurt.

Finally, coaches are not apt to go along with a tank. It will be hard for them to survive firing(s). Was Hue Jackson ever on board with the Browns’ plan to tank? And Todd Bowles insisted the Jets were trying to win the Super Bowl in 2017 as the front office eyed the next spring’s draft.

And that's what's wrong with participation trophies.

Exactly WHO is "tanking?"

You think these guys in their walk years arent trying their very best?

I admit that's highly questionable at times... but they are.

No player or coach is ever "tanking," even if the front office is secretly rooting for something else.

Good case in point is Miami last year. FO tried to "tank" but players and coaches were having none of it (got Tua anyway lol).

Jerry isnt trying to tank but we can continue to think that way. Gives him yet another excuse.
Trading away good players is tanking.

Once that happens management is undermined. Players know when they are not being supported and they are not going to put it all on the line for someone who does not reciprocate.

MIA's players are playing ultra hard this year. I've heard that theory, haven't seen a shred of evidence that's there's any truth to it.

Ethics in football went out the door around the time plastic helmets replaced leather helmets.

So, I say this: What's ethical about freezing a kicker? Or stashing healthy players on the injured unable to perform list?
Or coaches blowing smoke about their intended draftee and then choosing another?
What is ethical about fans making it impossible for the opposing QB to hear his cadence or a feigned injury to stop a clock? Or announcers breathlessly promoting an upcoming game between a 9-1 team against a 1-9 team?
Or deflated balls, stolen signals and sweetheart deals by municipalities to attract and keep NFL teams?

This proud rude boy from Leeds long ago gave up thinking there were ethics in professional NFL?

Me? I think of tanking as a strategic plan to make a football team better.
If you think tanking for 2021 is wrong, then I don't want to be right. So then go ahead enjoying your 8-8 seasons and the upcoming 3-13 season.

Holla and brings me a dollah!
Or holla and just owe me a dollar!

If they're out of the playoff picture, then the team needs to be doing everything they can to improve for the following season which begins on draft day.. But some Cowboy fans love meaningless wins. Nothing like a good moral victory around here. Which surprisingly enough never amounts to anything.

Webster definition of a loser, I.e. you, @PAPPYDOG aka Pappysmear and many others here:

a person who is incompetent or unable to succeed Don't waste your time on that loser.

3 super bowls in 4 years from a major tanker, Jimmy Johnson, says you are way off base.
I bet Jimmy never lost on purpose. No coach with a sack would do that. Tanking is for the FO and loser fans that have no heart or passion!!!!
