Would you have tanked for Ryan Leaf?

Would you tank for 2 firsts, 2 seconds and 2 thirds that the Titans got from the Rams for Goff?
Would you tank for 2 firsts, 1 second, 1 third and 1 fourth that the Browns got from the Eagles for Wentz?

Probably the more honest question given our circumstances.
No. Maybe I'm an old dumb football coach and player, but I would never lose on purpose.

I don't understand why someone would want to lose on purpose to draft a player that is not proven. Could put us back another 10 years.......
I see that point.

I think the whole idea is that from a fan perspective, if you have zero shot of winning a championship, it's better to be worse and draft higher.

I'm not sure that's the healthiest thing for this bunch.
They need to get some sort of momentum and carry it into next year....where the players buy into the staff and schemes...as opposed to drafting a few slots higher.

Actually, it is a righteous argument. It was 50/50 for Leaf/Manning and I can remember some saying it wasn't even close, Leaf is the guy. Leaf had more buzz coming in that any of those QB's you mentioned. The worst thing anyone could say was they couldn't go wrong with either one.

We're playing two games here. One is the grass is always greener and the other is these Bozos will build a better team around one of these blue chippers in this draft. Regardless of the QB, if they don't build a better team, doesn't matter.
i would prefer we trade top players for future first round picks if we can get any like miami did and then start the rebuilding program with that talent. worked for miami. it is working to some degree with raiders. is working for cleveland. but the idea of tanking a season is anathema to me. sends a horrible message to the players about their coaches and front office.

It depends on your definition of tanking.
Do you mean everyone tries their best to win, but you emphasize playing young guys so we can have a clear off-season strategy? Then, yes.
Do you mean that we basically give up in order to get the #1 draft pick? Then, no.

And it's not a QB we are after. It's as much young talent as we can collect onto a defense that will hopefully complement an offense that will be fantastic next year.

Now ask us if we would have tanked for Mahomes, Rodgers, Watson, Wilson, Hubert, Burrows etc.

Or Jamarcus Russell, Akili Smith, Johnny Manziel, Mitch Trubisky, Paxton Lynch, or a bunch of other guys. I like Fields, others likes Lawrence, none of us knows. But there are only a handful of QB's I'd pay $35-40 million so I'd roll the dice.

That said, Uncle Jerry will not - that's crazy talk! If the tag wasn't an option he'd have caved this year. It's only a matter of time.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me who this "Burrows" guy is I see people mention here. Reminds me of Michael Irving. :muttley:

The 25-year plan we are currently on has gone really well for us.....

You also know that Trevor Lawrence is not Ryan Leaf.

Like others mentioned, I think you are trying too hard here.

Also, we can "tank" all we want (which we aren't doing), We aren't leapfrogging the Jets and Jags to get to Lawrence. The numbers just don't work out.

Leaf is a bad example, if you're trying to compare the Cowboys tanking so they have a shot to draft Lawrence. Coming out of WSU, Leef had red flags regarding his character, which, unfortunately, we know the reasons now. No such concerns with Lawrence.
So, you would lose on purpose to draft Lawrence?
