You don’t make that call from your own 25 on a 4th and 10. Period. I don’t care if the WFT only had 10 men on the field, the odds of that play working are extremely low. A 4th and 1...maybe, but that’s even dicey.

One of my sons is a high school basketball coach and also has been an assistant football coach at the high school level. I’m a former school administrator who has watched over 30 years of HS sports as a Dad and as a school official. I have never seen a more foolish coaching call than that fake punt on 4th and 10 from your own 25.

As a Texas Tech fan, I saw the great Mike Leach go for it many times on 4th from his end of the field. Never saw a call that inherently stupid.

Then he was like 15 yards behind the LOS. Really just a horrendous call.

There are only 10 defenders in that shot. The 11th would be downfield (the returner).

That "wide open" receiver would be led right into the 11th man as he's coming forward.

With how our punter was doing, that returner would have been down towards his own 20 or 25. By this picture, there is no way that returner makes it to the wide open gunner in time to break up that play. Sure, he might stop him from scoring but we easily get the conversion and big gain. It's not like it was some hail mary type throw. You can get that ball to him pretty quickly at that distance.

The open receiver was Wilson's second read. Tough ask of a non-QB running full speed 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

to be honest

I LOVED IT

I don't care what the yapping media folks joke about it, had it work, all of them would be saying what a great call and none wold say bad call at bad time.

Everyone did their job, except Wilson ... I was smiling and felt we had it, until (like slow death) I started wondering "why is Wilson still running? where is he running? Hello!!! Wilson!!!! your man is open waiting for the ball"

As I said before, if there were one coach on this staff I would keep, it is the ST coach .. I like how he thinks

The more I am dissecting the fake punt, the more I am leaning the play design was not bad at all. It seemed we wanted to sell the run long enough to have the defenders come in a little and have the gunner running free down the sideline for an easy big gain or even score. As in the pic below. But a few things....Why did Wilson never even look up at all? Never even attempted to pass or even look down field. Also,Wilson is left handed so why is he running across his body if we wanted him to throw? Just a weird play all the way around. I do feel all he had to do was stop a little, set his feet and make an easy throw for someone who used to play QB in college. Might not have hit him in stride for a score but an easy pick up and big gain. It was still a very reckless call in the game situation and where we were at on the field but the execution seemed off, too.

I see it more of a desperate call for a team he realized was starting to get mauled in both the run game and on offense. Just look what happened right after the fake punt? They basically steam rolled us the rest of the game. I understand momentum change, but the defense was at the tipping point and the offense was struggling big time.

These type of phenomena happens frequently on Andy Dalton led teams....you don't get to 70wins 64 Losses 2 ties career by mistake.

Andy Dalton teams force players to play out of character. Career 123Ints.....Andy's WRs and RBs might lead the league in tackles after INT

lol...... beat that drum.......

I mean if you were telling me he could not see the people on the opposite sideline who were wide open I would concede your point.

However, the person who was wide open was so wide open that there was no one in between him and the thrower. He was right in front him straight ahead with nothing in between. I think it is actually harder to NOT see that throw.

To that I am going to say that that playcall worked. By that I mean the job of a playcall is put your players in a position to succeed, it is the job of the players to execute. The play created the opportunity but the players blew that opportunity so I put that entirely on them. Therefore I would put the results of that play on the players and not the coaches for using that playcall. HOWEVER I still hate the decision to actually go for it which I presume came from the HC and not the coordinator who probably made the call itself.

This fake punt play is pretty much how this team has been all season long. This team is overloaded with stupid dumb f@#$%^s acting like professional football players on a Sunday afternoon.

Seeing as the receiver was waving, I'd say he expected Wilson to throw it. Either that, or he was trying to sell a throw to the defense, in order to open up a running lane for Wilson........but that would be incredibly stupid.

That had to be a designed pass. I think maybe Wilson just did not feel comfortable pulling up and throwing. The ball would have had to go 25 yards in the air and maybe being left handed, running to his right he felt he did not have time to stop, set his feet and make an accurate throw. I Since he is left handed, why didn't they run that to the opposite side of the field?

i know i saw that too..just shows how stupid McCarthey is...first of all you are only down 20-16...we have stayed in the game some how some way....and you call a fake punt but even worse it is a long developing play that allows defense

to not be fooled....and Wilson use to be a QB so it seemed obious after he gets the reverse hand-off to throw a pass...but NO..and receiver could not be any more wide open....i blame it all 100% on McCarthey..100%....he has allowed

our players to continually play as thought they are confused as a deer in the headlights....the fact he would allow and sign off his DC Nolan to not only entertain but attempt to install a brand new complicated defense with no real

practice time or training camp cannot get any more stupid...so this horrendous fake punt call is just who McCarthey is...DUFUS who almost makes us long for Garrett...a dumpster fire.....and i found out.initially when McCarthey said

he spent the year off studying tendancies and data...that it was a LIE...he was just trying to get the job....makes me so angry...change name ..we are no longer Dallas Cowboys..we are the Dallas Dumpster fire...i am so so so angry

i want others to hurt like i hurt

This mistake by Wilson is probably why you don't rely on your 4th string WR to win the game for you by passing the ball on a fake punt reverse on 4th and 10 on your own 30 yd line.

Any way you slice it, the coaches made a dumb decision and an even dumber call.

PS. And even if Wilson did make the decision to throw to the wide open guy, who's to say that guy even catches it? I don't who that open player is, but I somehow doubt it's Ceedee Lamb
