This became a pretty heated debate at my family's Thanksgiving table last night, for a large family of Cowboys fans who live in New York but whose grandparents were all Cowboys fans (who also never lived in Texas). Heck I've been such a die-hard fan that I signed up for this forum at 13 / 14 years old.

There were of course the typical aspects of any Thanksgiving conversation that came up - including race, politics, etc; that are not appropriate for this board.

but on pure football this is where I stand -

Dak was on track for nearly 7,000 yards. He is a proven starter who has been top 12 in each of his seasons, and would be in the MVP conversation right now if he continued playing as he was.

This team went from an offense that simply couldn't be stopped to an offense that simply can't do anything with only 1 man changing.

I will end it with this - Trevor Lawrence may look like the best prospect since Andrew Luck, but Andrew Luck's career was no where on par with how Dak Prescott's career is slated to go if he continues playing at the level he has thus far performed at.

Dak Prescott is young and proven. Give me the proven QB. With how Dak has performed and this franchise is operating, if Dak is not under center because the franchise didn't do right by him, I will become a fan of whatever team he goes it.

Like that .500 ball and 1 playoff win every 5 years ehhh?
Well, Dak-Troll don't let the door hit you in the A@@!

We don’t have to come to consensus on this and it wouldn’t matter if we did. It’s inconsequential because the only opinion that matters belongs to the greatest of the undead general mangers.

Put me in the camp that hopes we commit long-term to #4, though it is disconcerting that it hasn’t happened already. What they say publicly about Dak is sweet and all, but doesn’t really align with their actions.

Lawrence is considered the best QB to come out since Andrew Luck.
Every top QB prospect plays on very good to great teams.
Which is why the bogans who run this place are idiots. "No QB in the draft no matter what." SMH~~~~~Paying Dak what he wants will doom this team to mediocrity for the next 5-10 years....but he'll make history in the stats and still be 8-8 every year.

Joe Montana completed 52% of his passes and had 25 TD's and 25 INT's in 3 ho-hum years at Notre Dame. Care to remember what he accomplished in the NFL?
he wasn't the first over all pick. Brady didn't accomplish much in college...went 6th round.

not sure what's your point. you seem to indicate you think Lawrence is a 100% gauaranteed QB that will succeed and lead teams to championships in the NFL....is that it?

Dak is a sure thing, and if Trevor gets to Dak's level he will be defying the odds and realistic expectations.
Dak is a good QB , but what do you mean by sure thing exactly .?

he had the best OL/RB/ WR combo yet in almost 5 years we saw 1 playoff win and massive amount of losses and meltdowns against good and bad teams .
If you seek 8-8 and occasional playoffs , then yeah he is perfect for that .
But if you want Super Bowls ( do you recall what those are ? ) then I have to question if you think bringing him back at 40 mil + , and solve all our OL and DL and DB problems ? The math and the record does not support that plan . Unless you want mediocrity to continue .
And I agree , Lawrence may not be the SB ticket by the way . We need massive injection of talent especially on defense .

Nope. Not at all. I'm just saying that there are many other characteristics to consider when drafting a QB or any other player for that matter. Lawrence is a proven winner in college. That's a given. He can be elite in the NFL if he's drafted by the right team for him, and them. I'm not trying to argue with you or disagree for the sake of disagreeing but, we need to do something different than what we've been doing because what we've been doing is not working. I know as well as you probably do that the draft is a great big crap-shoot. If we can parlay Dak for defensive help and/or draft picks I'd do it and draft the best QB available and go from there. No defense, no championships.

there are and have been many proven winners in college. Ryan Leaf was a proven winner in college. Jamies Winston was a proven winner in college. the list is long.....but lately, based on some people's analysis of his game, there are a lot of flaws to be concerned about. he can be elite. there is also a chance he can be average and fail in the NFL.

we need to do something different and it starts with defense....we are so bad, and have been bad and have not paid due attention to defense. we keep reaching for questionable players. gambling, hoping they turn out good. Jaylon Smith, Taco, Hill, LVE, Gregory, Lee, all had issues coming out of college. yet we picked them. gambling. we sign the wrong players in FA ala poe, mccoy, worley. we over pay players on the defensive side. and it has nothing to do with cap, because there is cap space available to sign anyone, and I don't advocate that. we have to change and become a defensive minded organization and right now we are not....that's why we are able to find gems in lower and mid rounds offensively, but can't hit on anyone defensively.

and if we don't have the QB then we have no chance given we can't build a defense and chances of us building a Ravensque defense are 1 in a million........and reality is jets will have the top pick. jags the second and the two top QBs worth gambling on will probably be gone by the 4th or 5th pick.....so lets not day dream about picking a qb and hoping it turns out...we did that with Dak, he turned out good and now we want to go on QB finding spree again....that's futile...

I wouldn't mind seeing us draft 11 defensive players next year.....we don't need anyone offensively really...(ok, maybe a tackle).

The biggest mistake the Jones boys made this offseason was not getting Dak signed long term. They just made many more since.

Don’t worry.. The Jones’s see things your way and your way is the path to keeping the team mediocre.

The passing yards argument is so bad.. Like so so bad. Yards usually come with volume of throws.. Jameis Winston lead the league in yards a year ago. It’s fools gold.

Not this time and even Tad his brother was up in arms on Twitter.
Yes, he is the worse GM in the NFL for 26 years running but not even Jones is that STUPID on this one.
Hope stems from the fact he didn't get the deal the last 2 years and after his gimp status and a limited Cap no way it becomes a reality now!

Dak is good for business.

He has a high ceiling and is a good player.

He’s also all over TV doing commercials constantly and represents the franchise well.

All those things will certainly make the Jones’s settle.

They’ll receive too much media backlash and criticism from part of their fan base if they made a move.

Like the Zeke deal.. Eventually they will do the deal and everyone will applaud it just like they did with Zeke.

We will then be locked into mediocrity for awhile and have maybe a 1 year window to win when Dak’s contract isn’t so bad and all the rookies that have been our only real upgrades start to become vets. (Assuming we hit on our picks)

Does dak have a high ceiling?
May I ask where it's been since 2017?
We're off point once again.
In fact, where have our Cowboy's been playing .500 ball?
Dak Prescott played with the most talented offense roster in the NFL for years and a top 10 defense and managed only 1 playoff win.
Dak Prescott is a Tier 3 QB and totally over-rated and supported by the agent run media.
This is the reality without prejudice or malice.

P.S.Will Jerry fold on this one....we shall know by the Draft.

I feel we have already seen what Dak can do when Dallas is 100% healthy and All Pro OL, with Zeke at his best and above average receivers. That was his ceiling to me....which is average.....problems when he came up against elite teams. Which are the teams you come up against in the playoffs. So no thanks. That has feels of the Garrett era written all over it. He certainly ain't worth 40mil ...hoping JJ sticks to his guns on this one. Dak and his agent will feel they have him over a barrel like when Romo was here and got his. Need to learn from past mistakes. At worst, May have to franchise Dak another year if they can't get their QB in the draft, which is wise since he will be coming of this bad injury.
