How much defensive turnover can we expect?

DE-Lawrence, Aldon*, Gregory, Armstrong, Anae, Crawford*, Carter

Aldon Smith is a player the team has already stated they would like to resign. Crawford's contract finally off the books and he will most likely not return in any capacity.

DT-Hill, Gallimore, Woods*

Woods didn't sign his contract until very late, which suggests he a) wasn't happy with the restricted amount or b) his role as being more of a backup with the Poe signing. c) both. I don't believe he returns next season. Front Office probably needs to double dip in this area of need, sign at least 1 veteran starter through fa and draft 1-2 more.

LB-Lve, Jaylon, Lee*, Thomas*

Can Lve be dependable to stay healthy? Does Jaylon need to be replaced now? Is Lee career about over? Major question marks throughout this group. Need to sign a veteran capable of starting if called upon. Need a future starter in the draft, along with depth at the position.

CB-Diggs, Brown, Awuzie*, Lewis*, Canady

With the expected departures of Awuzie/Lewis, there is a need for a future starter and depth at the position.

S-Woods*, Wilson, Thompson, Robinson

Woods hasn't done enough to warrant an extension. Wilson looks like a starter for this team next yr. Thompson is most likely going to be released. We have no idea where Robinson is in his development. Fa starter, future starter is needed.

As we see wholesale changes are needed on every level. What is a realistic expectation of defensive turnover for next season?

-2 stop-gap fa starters, probably at DT & S
-1 to 2 plug and play impact starters (if picking in top 10)
-1 to 2 future starters

I believe it is realistic to expect 4 new defensive starters on opening night next season with the possibility of more late in the season. Of coarse, they need to hit on whom ever they either sign or draft.

That sounds about right. The overall level of talent needs seriously upgraded on all 3 levels. There may not be much salary cap space for FA's. Luckily the Cowboys have stockpiled draft picks. Most of that capital needs used on defense.

Provided there is a true off season, I'm optimistic the Cowboys could field a top 10-15 defense next year. It would also help if they could be taught to create some turnovers.

Defensive Keepers for 2021 IMO in particular order of importance:
Lawrence, Gregory, Armstrong, Anae, Gallimore, Hill, LVE, Jaylon S, Diggs, A. Brown, D. Wilson...maybe R. Robinson.
I would let Sean Lee and Crawford go. I think Aldon Smith will be too expensive to keep for his age. Let Lewis, X Woods, Thompson, A. Woods go.
Needs: DTs, S, CBs, LBs...pretty much every position on D. Get plenty of D help in draft and be active in FA.

Unfortunately, I feel as long as Nolan is here, the defense may never get out of the 25-32 range... he’s just not good, look at his track record.

What I want to happen, and what I believe will happen are not the same.

With the cap going down, I don't expect very many long term deals and very few big money deals, especially for players coming off of meh seasons.
I think the vast majority of FAs will want to sign 1-year deals in the hope that the money will be much better in '22.
Because of this, I expect Aldon to sign a 1-year deal worth 4 or 5 million and Chido, X Woods, and DT Woods to resign for 1-year deals that are not much higher than the vet minimum. Chido may get a bit more as a CB, but not much.
This could work to our favor, if the team drafts well and allows for a fair competition between the young guys and the vets.

I agree with your list of holdover players. If the team truly wants to rebuild this defense, they are going to need to overhaul the personnel. Sign a few stop gap bridge players to buy time until the prospects drafted are ready to assume starter roles.

Based on numbers, they are going to have to sign some veteran fa's, if it's in house or on the open market. We cannot expect multiple rookies to start day 1. Safety/DT are two positions they almost have to sign starters. At corner they still have Brown. Wonder if Awuzie is brought back to play safety for a yr?

I think you see a new corner, 1 new safety, and a DT. I think gallimore gets the start and they bring in a fa to fill the other void. I’d love to see jaylon replaced but I don’t think jones has the guts.

Maybe a new starter at 3rd linebacker if you count that position.

3-4

With a top 5 pick they should get two day 1 starters with their first two picks.

possibly the high third rounder if it’s a safety or linebacker.

Jaylon is not going to released, until they find his replacement. They can do it now or get a prospect ready in 2022 when his contract is more affordable for his release.

I'm still hesitant projecting a top 5 selection. Still see win's left on their schedule.

Woods wasn't happy. Got delusional thinking he could renegotiate his contract as an ERFA. Too much Jerry signing bad deals. Meanwhile, he was lucky, and so were we, that we didn't cut him. It was in the cards on numbers before McCoy went down.

Woods has been pretty meh this year, but he's been our best DT. He's RFA next year and will be tendered cheap or we get a pick. Either way, I think we'll take that result. But we aren't cutting him for nothing in return unless it's on final cuts. Probably trade him for a conditional pick. He's meh, but not a bum.

I thought Woods is unrestricted next year.

It's not hard to replace expensive and awful. Get Jaylon out of here before he gets injured, guaranteeing his next 2 year of salary.

Playing Jaylon shows that Nolan is on #TeamTank.

The business side would be a 10 million cap hit to release him this off-season.

ERFA this year, RFA next year. That's why he was so bummed. Expected to lose his starting spot to Poe, maybe be cut, then be 29 when he finally hits real free agency in 2022.

Though he'll have started for years, he's not going to ever hit a big pay day.

I agree, Jones wont do it, but they should.
