Well, you and Jerry have something in common...

I really like neither. many of the players have been here long enough and are just mediocre players...

That's all they are is mediocre...

There is no way to make sense of this season.

Covid with new coaching staff.

Extreme injury issues.

Some of the coaching staff did not even know each other prior to being hired. A new HC can only hire coaches that are available.

Garrett would have just had Zeke ram into the Washington DL all game long despite their DL being one of the best.

Turmoil this season is better than the Garrett MO of close losses and 8-8 or 9-7 seasons with no real chance of true playoff success.

It is hard to evaluate our current situation. Wins and losses are viewed as the supreme evaluation criterion, but they are not always an effective way to evaluate a team.

If you look at this from a glass half full perspective, we are stacked on offense if Dak comes back healthy and plays at a high level. If you look at it from a glass half empty scenario, and Tyron is done, you will have to spend a 1st round pick in this draft just to get back even on offense. If the grade is there on Sewell, I pull the trigger on that player and see if I can flip Tyron for a pick (2nd or 3rd) to help fill out the defense.

If Dak can’t come back, or we go with a rookie, we will likewise not be as good next year. I don’t see that happening, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility for either situation.

Defensively, it’s really hard to tell how far away we are. Is it mostly scheme? Poor coaching? Poor players? All three?

One or two players can make a great deal of progress in the play of the defense because it works as a unit. See—-Poe’s departure. Return of LVE.

I think the defense is not as far away as most think, but we need help on the back end. Diggs and Brown will likely be here next year, and probably Wilson in the secondary. The rest are probably gone. We will probably need at least 4 new DBs from either the draft or free agency.

I would like to see us be able to extend Aldon and Gregory on very team friendly, inventive laden deals.

I think we need a Fletcher Cox type of player on the DL. We don’t have one. We could get by on what we have on the DL otherwise.

Good post.

Jaylon is the only one that I would cut for 2021.

Zeke is not earning his pay, but he is not a terrible player (unless he keep fumbling).

Doctors recommend the neck/back surgery for Tyron about 3 or 4 years ago but either he or the Cowboys decided not to have it done.

Some players to have excellent results after back surgery.

The key with Tyron is to make certain that they have legit backup options.
It's weird but OT is one of the deepest positions on the team.
Tyron and La'el are easily Pro Bowl caliber
Cam Erving is a solid Swing option.
Knight and Steele are low value, cheap depth but now with experience and a full off-season before next year.
But I get how hard it can be to find an LT and Swell may be the smart choice even if it';s least right now bang for buck.

Jaylon isn't getting cut this off-season imho but it would really be nice to get him off the field SOME... like last week.
An R3 or R4 who can get snaps day 1 and rest Jaylon on 30% or so of defensive snaps is a huge win.
But I don't need to spend a top 10 pick there.

I don't know if you were reading this board after the 2015 season when we 4-12, but every thread was either "this is the worst defense of the last 30 years" or "we will suck for the next ten years". The next year we went 13-3.

And that season was about one injury to Romo, this year its nine starters - six of which have played in a Pro Bowl.
yup nine starters but total of 17 players injured..

One thing that I'm absolutely certain about is that I'm a more objective viewer than you are.

If you're honest with yourself, you know that my statement is true.

You still hold a grudge because Jerry fired Landry.
I'm more objective. Nyah!

Imo, before the draft and the franchise tag deadline, the cowboys need to figure out whether or not they can sign dak long term. There can be no ambiguity. If this requires a take it or leave it offer with a deadline for an answer, so be it. If we can't, look to make a splash during free agency for some glaring needs and figure out our draft options. We cannot allow ourselves to br held hostage again.

Exactly, and they were at the critical positions. Its one thing to lose an OG or Safety but its completely different to lose Prescott or LVE.

LVE is a the quarterback of the defense, I just did the quick count and in the 7 games he played Dallas gave up an average of 28 points. In the 5 games he didn't, they averaged allowing 40.

What's a bogan?
Australian and New Zealand slang for a person whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour are considered unrefined or unsophisticated with a potty mouth and a special fondness for alcoholic beverages. It can be used as a term of endearment, or pejoratively depending on the context. Since JJ is a billionaire and dresses well and has all the accoutrements that go along with it -yachts, jets, limos, etc, I was using the term pejoratively about him since he acts like one - alcohol, low standards, bad football, bad contracts, nose pickin, and bad decisions. :muttley:(Mostly only used pejoratively for people who try to act like they aren't bogans but they really are because they should be proud of it.)
Like lots of down under slang, the Aussies claim the word, but New Zealand has its fair share of bogans.
***Most bogans are proud to be such*** It's not considered a bad thing really. I got a lot of bogan in me and proud of it. I relate to bogans. They're my people. I got extended family down there on Robicheaux Bayou near New Iberia and all are proud to be self-sufficient, simple, unsophisticated, drinkin and smokin' guitar playin' swamp folks, i.e. bogans.
I suppose the best synonym in the US would be redneck. Ain't nuthin' wrong with dat neither. Think Charlie Daniel's "Simple Man" or Hank Williams Jr "Country Boy Can Survive."
Larry the Cable Guy would be considered a bogan.

mr xwalker--what is your view when big Mike seems to continually sign off on ...not just below average percentage a play will work...but obvious stupid plays?

This is the worst football we’ve seen since 2015. Maybe before that. I’m not seeing what there is to like. Injuries, the team lacks any heart. Unnecessary coaching risks are costing us games. Our star players who manage to stay in the lineup are coming up small, and we’re failing to deliver in the worst division in football. It’s boring to watch, and there’s little hope of it improving in the next few seasons. It’s awful.
I'm a bit surprised by this post from you. Aren't you usually a glass half full sort of guy?

I'm not knocking your post. I think a reasonable case can be made looking at it from the glass half full/empty perspective.

Are you referring to the plays in which the ball seems to be flipped to someone else before anyone realizes who has it in the first place, not as much as giving the defense a chance to over pursue?

Those?

The jury is still out on the coach/coaching staff/players. Every team had the same problems. Our defense is beyond pathetic, even with one good game.

I'm not knocking your post. I think a reasonable case can be made looking at it from the glass half full/empty perspective.

I think, more than anything, I thought we were on the right path with a defacto-GM in McClay, Stephen stepping up, and a sane HC who made conservative decisions and focused on developing players and keeping the spotlight off the team. That wasn’t enough, but I thought it was the best antidote to the chaos that comes with Jerry Jones and that naturally follows then Cowboys. That’s why I was so reluctant to see that not work out, because the sort of aimless wandering we did between Jimmy and Parcells just sucks.

I feel like we’re wandering again. I don’t get how we’re using our resources. We added a bunch of VFAs who can’t play, and need to upgrade both the OL and the DL with a huge QB contract overhanging the cap. It’s just not a recipe for building a team the smart way.

I wish I felt otherwise. And I don’t go around pooping in every thread about the same issues. But in threads about our overall direction, I have to call it like I see it. If I understood what we were trying to do I’d probably rationalize it and give it a chance, but this just looks like a hodge-podge to me. No?
