Why do tankers think drafting high means anything?

It’s not even about tanking for a high pick. We could’ve traded down for a lot more picks and gotten a lot of defensive pieces. You see how depleted and putrid our secondary is. Our DT and linebacker positions are clearly in trouble. We’re picking up Lowe’s cashiers at this point. We needed the picks and we blew it all for a win against a meddling team that lost their starting QB. What a joke.

tanking rarely works.

mahomes and brady are some of the best qbs since 2000 and they weren't chosen first in the draft.

What is better about missing the playoffs at 6-10 vs missing playoffs at 3-13? Both teams suck and miss the playoffs. But one team is going to have first shot at the players they preference in the draft while the other team is going to have sit back and wait to see who falls in their lap or give up more draft capitol trying to move up.

You mention the outlier draft picks. Might as well throw in Dan Marino and Joe Montana too. But you can't count on that kind of luck to build a team. You want the best draft slots you can get and none other than Jimmy Johnson understood that concept as he steered the cowboys to a 1-15 record in 1989. He could have won more games but he chose to cut or bench the MN Viking veterans he acquired in the Hershel walker trade. Why would he do that? Jimmy knew that he would rather be 1-15 with draft picks than have a few meaningless wins and inferior picks. He was thinking ahead........which is a foreign concept to many on this board.

2 things amari, you dont know if the jones boys would trade down for picks, and you dont know who or what they would draft.
They could be picking first and screw it up, and they wont do what you or others here would do, because they are the jones boys !!

Why do Cowboy fans on this board think trading down is better than staying at your high pick?

But more to the point. How many other championship quarterbacks were selected out of the first two rounds versus the last four rounds? Your citing Mahomes and Brady leaves a great dal out of this discussion.

I certainly cannot speak to the mental intent of the Landry last year, per coaches and or management. But if we see that as a tanking year, since there were some of us fans who were more in favor of not winning for the 1st over-all, than winning a meaningless game or two, I'd say Troy Aikman kind of makes your point no point at all.

Plus, in that draft, since it is more than just one player, Dallas took Steve Wisniewski (guard) in the second, who played 13 years for the Raiders. In return they received compensation which brought Dallas Daryl Johnston and Rhondy Weston. Weston had a poor showing in training camp and was cut and picked up by Tampa Bay.

That draft also produced for Dallas Mark Stepnoski and Tony Tolbert.

Since draft slotting for a team is in all rounds of that draft and not just the first Dallas received:

Troy Aikman
Daryl Johnston
Mark Stepnoski
Tony Tolbert

So it is more than just the first pick you are tanking for.

A higher draft position gives you more options that's not debatable. Who is picked is debatable. Tanking rarely works because tanking doesn't exist. Nfl teams and players don't tank. But a higher draft position is no doubt better than a lower draft position.

Its funny that all these clowns begging for tanking are the same ones saying this team isnt accountable, makes zero sense. Loser mentality usually means loser in life.

Please list all these clowns saying what you suggested. Your kind of broad brush comment is unsubstantiated, and posting on a message board doesn't offer a great deal of insight into the person who created the post.

For all I know of the posts you have made in the past is you could be the driver of a port-o-potty truck or the CEO of American Airlines.

This team is playing so poorly largely because of injury issues. If you add one or two blue-chip talents to this roster, preferably on defense, I truly believe they're Superbowl contenders. Yes, blue-chip talent can be had at any point in the draft, but it would be ignorance to suggest selecting a player earlier doesn't increase your chances.

Also, you're arguing two very different points. No, tanking is not proven to help, but yes, drafting high is proven to help. So which one is it you're arguing against exactly?

I would agree that tanking is a bad strategy on so many levels, however, even a fan can pick with some level of success in the top ten of a draft.

Oh yeah. And being happy with mediocrity means what in life?

If we aren’t impressed by the cowboys beating the bengals it means we are losers in life huh?

...the idea is, I guess the better players are at top. Sometimes it proves itself, sometimes not.

Posting on a message board isn't the same as drafting for a NFL football team......

This is why the OP made this thread...for these kinds of idiots.
