Now that Mike Nolan is a lock to be fired at the end of the year the Cowboys need to go in one direction and one direction only when it comes to defensive coordinator and that's Sean Lee. Lee is seeing less and less playing time and now would be a great time to retire and take over the defensive coordinator duties. Now I know there will be plenty of people that will say that I'm crazy or that Lee isn't ready and all that garbage but when have we've seen a guy with Lee's intellect, work ethic, and ability to break down film. Lee is so smart that he has even changed the D-coordinator's calls because he knew it wasn't the right defense for that situation. If I was Jerry Jones I would bring Lee into my office and tell him that it's time to retire but now you're going to be my new defensive coordinator and promise him that's we're going to do everything we can to bring guys in through either the draft and or free agency to help rebuild that defense.

rolling my eyes.
WHAT evidence or resume or past coaching experience do you rely on? What is it about Lee that leapfrogs him past 100 other pro linebackers and thousands of active coaches around?
Amateurs like you who think you can just plug a player into coaching --- IN YOUR CASE NOT AN ASSISTANT COACHING SPOT IN JC OR COLLEGE BUT HC FOR A PROFESSIONAL TEAM!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, BLOKE??? --- drive me up the wall!
The girlish voice in you says "But he's a coach on the field!"
Sean Lee can't even coach himself!!!!!!!
You and Lee the Leech are laughable, Laughable I say! har-har-har!
Girlish fantasies ,,,,

I'd recommend coaching from the press box.....a bit safer from sideline injury.

You know who had a TON of experience when he got hired Mike Nolan, you know who SUCKS as a D-coordinator Mike Nolan! Don't give me that we need a coach with experience BS because Lee has enough game experience to know how to run the show. Lee knows the players and he knows the 4-3 defense Lee is the ideal pick in the perfect situation give the guy a shot!
When you started to work for a company, did you start at the top? Neither should Lee. Just sayin.

- Lee himself has to decide if he wants to even be a full time coach. Coaching is not for everyone,... not matter how elite some players were.
I've heard ex-players make mentioned that NFL coaches spent a lot of hours time up at the facility and a lot of time away from family during the season.
Being occasional special guest consultants is one thing, ..being a full time NFL coach is a whole another matter.

- You cannot force players to retire and end their playing careers if they feel they still can be productive on the playing field.
They either have to get physically playing the game out of their system, injuries or physical/medical conditions have to take such a physical toll to force them out …
or they have to be in a forced out position to where they cannot get any work or interest from any NFL team.

That's when they turn to something else that keeps them in the NFL works or limelight in some capacity or another.
Per NFL TV or radio broadcasting, show co-hosts, scouting dept. offices, etc.
Or as assistant coaches,.and before some advancing to even higher coaching grounds. (mike munchak, russ grimm, pepper Johnson, mike Vrabel, Herm Edwards, Frank Reich, Jack Del Rio, Ron Rivera, Tony Dungy, etc.)

- And can you name heralded big name players that retired immediately and jump right straight to being coordinators the next day without being previous position assistants ?

I can under the interest and enthusiasm that fans have about Lee's high football IQ, knack for the game, and leadership abilities, but there are other factors at hand
before considering him as "immediate DC".

When the snake finally gets released it will be a good thing. Get rid all of Garrett's RKG's

Lee HAS actually expressed interest (in interviews last season) in coaching immediately after he retires. IMO he’ll retire after this season....I don’t know if he could jump straight to DC....Probably linebacker coach to start and then work his way to a DC position. I do hope Cowboys hire him as linebacker coach next yr and see where things go from there.

Mike Singletary was handed the assistant Head Coach position after coaching linebacker just 2 seasons

Not sure what the difference between Lee and Singletary could be?

Both students of the game.......

This is the problem. People, in general, have no idea what it takes to be a good Coach. I mean, a lot of times, you can ask a Coach what makes other Coaches good and they can't tell you a lot of times. It's because it's things learned along the way. It's losing hard games because of calls or adjustments or just not seeing things that make the difference between winning or losing, along the way. You don't just come out of the shut as a great Coach. There is much more to it then that. I do believe Lee could be a good Coach, eventually, if certain things went right but it doesn't mean that he is one right now. Most of you have no idea what it takes to be a great Coach. Why do players not become great HCs, most of the time? Players, as great as they might be, are spoiled. They work, but they don't work like Coaches do. Most players are blessed with God given talent, ability, skills. They don't have to work as hard to get where they are because they are blessed from the jump with a huge advantage over 99% of the people on the face of the earth. Coaches, that's different. There are no built in advantages to Coaching, such as athleticism etc. It's all about how hard you work, how you can learn, how you can apply what you learn, the experience you pick up along the way, how you can interact with other players and your own staff, thousands of little things just like this along the way. It's all work and that's why Players often don't make great Coaches. It's a lot easier to become a great player if you have the talent from the start. Coaching, there are no easy roads to greatness. You can't wish a Coach to greatness just because you want him to be great. You gotta put in the time.

I agree with your position Coach.
There is a ton of truth to your post that most do not understand. I disagree with the statement of no built in advantages though. Yes, some are blessed with the talent and ability to teach, lead and monitor-- some aren't. I do agree with the statement that you gotta put in the time though. I think Sean Lee would be a great LB coach or asst LB coach to begin with, and might be a good DC some day. I see a ton of guys who are good coordinators (Wade Phillips) but cannot be a good Head Coach. Same thing goes for position guys to coordinator. Most just jump jobs because they want the higher pay, not because they are actually good at their job. With that said, I know a guy that is a much better HC than he ever was assistant coach. He was great at motivating, disciplining, and game management..........sucked at teaching. So he surrounded himself with the best teaching assistants he could find, and his teams are great some years, and awful when his teachers leave to take on head coaching jobs (ie watch Bill B). Then the assistants fail, and he is set back but always comes back as he gets better assistants. Head coaching, Coordinating, and Position coaching are different skillsets, and many don't realize the difference, and what skills it takes to do each of them. You see it all over the NFL today.

I hate threads like this, to be honest. There is always somebody who wants to see a former player get into coaching or join the organization in some capacity, etc. The problem is that once you join the team in some other capacity, you are no longer a player and the fans, they turn real quick. People who are or were loved by fans, become the enemy and fans can get pretty ugly. I wouldn't do it if I were a former player. At least I wouldn't do it with the team that I formerly played for.

One of the greatest players, in any sport, I've ever watched was Magic Johnson. Laker to the bone and look what's transpired there. I would not do it if I were Lee.

Based on what?
don't forget. a lot of fans here are Madden NFL, Fantasy Football generation. just make trades happen, plug and play, put anyone at coach, push button A, click click....etc....the lack of football understanding is just amazing.
