But it's not just tanking for Troy Aikman. It's tanking for Moose Johnston. And Mark Stepnoski. And Tony Tolbert. It's every round.

You have that so wrong. The Cowboys didn't have a 1st round pick in 1990 because of taking Steve Walsh in the 1st round of the supplemental draft in 1989 so they used the pick they got from the vikings in the Walker trade to trade up to the steelers 17th pick. So yes, the Walker trade got Emmitt. Even at that, if it was left to Jimmy Johnson, Emmitt wouldn't have been a Cowboy. Johnson wanted to draft LB James Francis but about 1 minute after the trade with the steelers was completed, the bengals drafted Francis so Johnson was going to take LB Tony Bennett but Jones said no to that and that they would take Emmitt. The ironic thing was that was the second draft in a row that Jones over ruled Johnson on their first pick. In 1989 Jonhson want to take Tony Mandarich but Jones said Aikman. In both cases the packers picked right after the Cowboys and took both players Johnson wanted. Mandarich was a bust and Bennett was an average LB. Johnson didn't want Aikman or Emmitt because they both turned him down and not going to Miami.

.
.
Jimmy DID want AIkman. He'll even tell the story himself. He wanted Aikman when he coached OK State and Troy chose Oklahoma. When Jimmy went to Miami he wanted Troy when he was transferring but Troy chose UCLA. When Jimmy went to Dallas he told Troy, at draft time, that he wasn't getting away this time. There's interviews everywhere about it.
Not to be argumentative just stating that Jimmy always wanted Troy over Mandarich. He also talks about wanting Francis but got beat to the punch. Never heard about Bennett in any interview.

I would trade this year #1, Zeke, Jaylon and Gallup for the top pick. What do you have to lose? Their Oline isn't getting any better any time soon and Zeke is an average back at this point. You would get rid of two bad contracts. I would regret losing Gallup, but he's due a contract and you can't pay all three receivers.

So you're saying we should just get rid of our 1st round picks.

So, question: Why are you touting the worthlessness of draft picks due to some not working out?
No and I’m not just pointing out draft picks aren’t a sure thing and wanting the team to lose to gain a higher pick is fruitless and doesn’t happen in the NFL.

So profound. So genius. So stupid.
Well here’s what TD and #22 think about you.

First of all never said I was a Dak hater. I like him but I think Lawrence is better. Second of all a team can get a total of 4 comp picks not 0-3. If we get the 4 we are projected to get in the rounds we are projected to get that would be 1, 2, two 3’s, two 4’s, 5, two 6’s, and two 7’s. That is a total of 11 picks. I bet you wouldn’t even have done the Walker trade because we would be giving away our one true offensive weapon at the time and will be drafting unknowns. Thank God you are not close to the Cowboys because we would probably not win any Super Bowls with your thinking.

With your thinking there's never been a bust taken even as high as the 1st player taken in the draft, but reality says there has been. Here's what wrong with your last way of thinking. The Cowboys were a bad team and traded their best player Walker for a record setting amount of players and draft capital and you want to now take a bad Cowboys team and instead of getting a boat load of draft capital you want to squander draft capital on a single player that will not leave the Cowboys with high draft picks to address actual real needs like offensive line and several defensive positions and without address the real problems they have that QB that you wasted all those draft picks on won't turn the Cowboys into a winning team and why is that? Because the Cowboys will still have a bad defense and problems along the offensive line. I'll take a QB that has already proven he can play in the NFL over one that has taken zero snaps in the NFL and only has the same people that have proclaimed others as sure fire NFL stars that turned out to be busts.

Gee there are interviews and reports that because Aikman turned down Johnson twice that Johnson's plan all along was to use that #1 pick on Tony Mandarich and then take Walsh in the Supplemental draft.but Jones said Aikman will be the pick. Johnson still convinced Jones to take Walsh in the supplemental draft and Jones said they would compete for the job. In their first practice in training camp Walsh's first pass was a pick. In the pregame round table for Super Bowl XLV in Dallas with Aikman, Emmitt, Irvin, Johnston, Jones and Johnson this was discussed. During this round table Emmitt said that if it was left to Johnson he wouldn't have been a Cowboy and then thanked Jones for making him a Cowboy. Also during this round table Johnson finally admitted that hen didn't have all the power and authority those outside of the organization thought he had and that this irked him his entire time in Dallas. This was all said in front of millions of viewers.

First we might not get a boatload of picks like the Walker trade did for us. I highly doubt a team is going to give us that many picks. Yes there are a lot of first round QB busts but there is also a lot of first round success. I am just saying it is something I would think about. Dak is a good qb and I like him. There is still lot up in the air about him as there is Lawrence. It really is a moot point because the Jags will not give up the 1st pick in the draft anyway.

Any good military man knows that sometimes strategic retreat is best. Lose a battle to win a war.

It's funny, not ha ha funny, that only some fans think there is things up in the air or questions about Prescott but the people that actually know, the doctors and trainers don't think so. Whether either the jags or jets are unwilling to give up that pick, it's still total foolishness if they would to waste all that draft capital on an unproven QB when there are SO MANY needs and the Cowboys will need EVERY draft pick they have.

This entire conversation is moot. We have zero shot at the top few QBs where we will be drafting.

Really though, it's a poorly disguised hope for those that don't like Prescott. They have zero interest in discussing draft risk and managing it. They want a replacement without any other consideration.

Agreed with @Hardline .

As for another poster, this is not about tanking to get access to the overall #1 pick in order to draft Lawrence because that is never going to happen. The point here is that tanking allows the team to secure a higher draft pick (possibly a top spot), thus allowing the team to pick the best top talent available not only in the 1st but each round thereafter. THAT is how this team could best fill in spots of need with the best available talent in each round. If one does not understand that, they simply have an stubborn agenda.
We can get the top LB in the 7-12 range
