Did Dalton play himself into a starter contract?

Call Denver, Chicago, New England, Washington, Detroit, Carolina and they will all consider it

First you have to think. If Prescott doesn't sign a long term deal and is tagged, the amount will be 37-38 mil. Now here's the part where you have to think. EVERY team knows the cap will be smaller next year so next year WILL NOT be the year they will give up valuable draft picks for a QB with that kind of guaranteed salary. Now those teams you mentioned, the patriots are very well known to not pay big contracts and let those players walk in free agency so it's highly unlikely that they would give up draft picks to get a big contract. Washington having gone through the tag issues with Cousins is another doubtful to trade for Prescott. The lions where there is some talk about moving on from Stafford because of his 23 mil contract is doubtful that they would use draft choices for a QB with 15 mil more in contract. The bears have a better chance of signing Trubisky to a much smaller contract than Prescott. So now you're down to just a couple of teams and again with a smaller cap having to give up draft picks AND a big contract it's doubtful teams are going to do that.

I agree don't think he's in the elite

I agree, Dak is not in that elite category. He's a good QB that can make plays but needs a roster loaded with above average talent to perform well. Not sure how feasible it would be to have him at $40M per YR and try to improve the defense and offensive line.

That’s the issue. We’re in QB limbo. It sucks.
I’m of the opinion that if your don’t have a franchise QB, you don’t have a QB period.
So do whatever it takes to identify one, and then go get him.
I just watched a guy in Tannehill who got paid 65 MIL in the offseason get his butt ripped a new one by a franchise QB. Like Dak, Tannehill is a solid QB. But the other guy is going to HOF.
If there’s an Aaron Rogers in this draft, GO GET HIM.

Dalton will be a very serviceable option on a team with weapons around him like he has here. Perfect as a backup for us again, but if he wants a starting gig I can't think of a competitive team who needs him as their starter. Might be some teams out there..

He could still be here next year. I dont think he'll be a hot commodity around the league. Wrong side of 30,
Wrong side rid 30 doesn’t apply to QBs... ppl jsut don’t understand that.

Look at Phillip rivers got last offseason and he’s also at 40. Alex smith is older than Dalton and he got a starter value contract “on the wrong side of 30”. Dalton is at worst equal or better than both of those guys

Andy Dalton seems to be on a good streak this Kellen gun offense and 3 game win streak ,, seem like he's gain great confidence and rhythm en route to big plays in pass game

this could make him look more attractive in the FA market .. teams like the Pats, ..or Washington that could have really used him

His age (33 yrs) will be something going against him long term. but i could see Pats signing him as a stopgap starter until a a grooming young buck draftee is ready to take the wheels

He's like a Ryan Fitzpatrick

:D
Probably not in Dallas, but definitely somewhere in the NFL.

Ok, pay Dak $40M or pay Dalton $15M? Tell me something, who does Dak make better? All 3 receivers are performing with Dalton playing with a back up offensive line.
Dak at 40M lmao what a dumb question. I’m not intentionally downgrading at QB

he can read a defense unlike the other guy and knows he has to get the ball out fast because of the weak offensive line. Being able to read the defense is what we've been missing with the other guy. When the offensive line was missing one guy, read that again, one guy, everybody blamed the offensive line. Let that slow reader play behind this line and he would have been in shell shock again like a few year back against Atlanta.

Players that cannot read defenses throw a hell of a lot more picks than what we've seen out of Prescott.

Dalton deserves consideration as a starter with a solid contract but we are talking three years max. He is no one's long term plan. He would be the starter as that team searches and develops a young prospect.

I think people really underestimate how many QB's are floating around. This draft is stacked with them so another 4 or 5 teams are going to draft their QB of the future in April. Then you have the situations with guys like Wentz, Darnold, Minshew, Stafford, etc. who might be looking for new teams.

I don't see a big market for Dalton. Maybe some team that drafts a QB signs Dalton to be a vet mentor / back up for 2 years.

IMO, QB is about to become like RB. Positional scarcity is going to be a thing of the past. OL and DL are the positions that are actually hard to fill with quality players because you need so many of them.

No. There is only a handful of teams that will be looking for a starter. And many of those teams will draft a guy. Then you have other vets like Mariota, possibly Garropolo, Winston, Stafford and Wentz who may be available. Dalton has solidified his role as a very good backup QB who can adequately start if needed.

There will be money out there for him.

My bet it's from a team that drafts a QB relatively high and wants a vet QB to start if need be if the young guy isn't ready yet.

I dont disagree, i'd probably take Dalton over Fitz too, but you never know what front offices are thinking. Dalton didnt do enough get much attention last offseason, has this year changed that? If Dallas doesnt keep him as a starter in 2021 i'd hope he lands a big deal for the comp pick, but im skeptical he is going to be a super hot commodity. Maybe a team like Indy would make sense if rivers retires. Maybe New England.

Dalton took over the league's #1 offense when Dak was injured and all the weapons at his disposal but couldn't get it done. Don't believe me? Go back check the threads after each game ......you won't see many, if any, of Dak's haters/critics posters here calling him Dak's replacement. That speaks volumes.......

Just don't thinks he's done enough to impact his status around the league.

100%.....just don't see a team planning their 2021 season around him.

In fact, you can probably Dalton and Cam Newton now in the same boat IMO. Their chances of teams signing them as day-one starters are likely over.
