Go watch the play. Zeke has outside contain and stays wider than the widest. He hits the OT at the same time the RB is cutting inside and past him where the DL and Sean Lee were wiped out.
Smith was never closer than 2 steps away from the RB and that was with the OT in between them.
It was terrible form from Jaylon but he just did his primary job here, force the ball back inside.

You can go watch Zeke's long run for the same play basically by Dallas and the Eagles LB does essentially the same thing minus any weird head butts.
Ideally Jaylon would press that OT and squeeze the hole but the hole was so insanely huge Jaylon just hit the guy out in space to block him.

There are far better full versions of this play on twitter and other places.
Guys jobs are gaps and holes not 11 dudes just tackling someone.

Jaylon probably could have avoided the OT and just ran to jump on the guys back at the end of the tackle after 10 yards because you do appear to love those plays.

I watched it numerous times and could not figure out while he decided to engage the OT instead of attacking the guy with the ball who was right there. I don't need to watch it again. I want my LBers attacking the guy with the ball when he is right there within striking distance. There is a point when outside contain no longer matters and that's when the RB cuts inside.

He had the outside containment however it doesn't answer the question why he stopped, planted his feet to knock the guy down when he noticed the cut back inside. He could have easily took two step inward

Looks like he could have gone and made the tackle instead and that blocker wouldn't have even touched him. Anyone see this? Why didn't he just run to the RB and tackle him?
Great questions. He rarely tackles a ball carrier head to head or at first point of contact. He has to let the ball carrier run past himself so he can dog pile after the safety makes the initial contact. I'm sure his teammates just roll their eyes in film study.

I think it's a fine waiting to happen. You can't leave your feet and hit someone in the head these days. Whether it's dirty or not can be debated. This is just Jaylen being Jaylen.

Why do I feel they would be better on D if he actually got suspended? Anyone else?

Go for the damn guy with the ball. I don’t know what Jaylon was doing there exactly but what ever it was, was bad defense from a LB as the RB is running by you

clearly launching off your feet, head first into a blocker is a "shoulder shrug". That is absolutely poor technique at best

I'm pretty comfortable saying that if Jaylon Smith "launched" himself he'd be more than a couple inches off the ground. Bum knee and all. It's absolutely poor technique. It's not remotely "dirty" or "malicious" in any way. The helmet contact is incidental.

Outside contain doesn't mean you sit and watch the RB cut inside and do nothing. The play was right in front of him. As soon as the RB cut back inside, he could have have taken two steps and tackled him or at least been in on the tackle. Instead, he headbutted an OL, spun around, and ended up doing nothing. I don't get what he is doing half the time. He came up celebrating a tackle yesterday that he made 10 yards downfield on 3rd and 6. What is that?
So totally disregard the 300 pound lineman bearing down on him. The back was behind the lineman, he didn't cut inside until he read which direction is block was going. Stop being unrealistic just to find a slither of criticism in Smith, nobody could have got to that back without engaging with the lineman in some form or another.

He hurt his knee in college from an olineman blocking him away from the play like that. I think he is extremely defensive about being in that situation, it's why he gets blocked so easily. He doesn't plant and fight off olineman anymore. Don't know what he was expecting to do by lunging into him like that.
" The kinetic shoulder spear point *maneuver*"
* duly ascertained to be of a patented& uniquely effective on the fly field expedient utilization of his capabilities.:starspin:

He doesn't use his legs/feet when he tackles. He uses his weight instead. That's why he often gets dragged. How long can he last with that technique?
hopefully thats another teams problem in the very very near future

There is nothing wrong with that play. If that's a dirty play then they should switch to flag football. Tell the offensive lineman to stop tiptoeing out there and it wouldn't have happened. Granted, Jaylon was doing his own tap dance so it just looks weird.
