what offensive position of need to we have? TE? WR? RB? OL? perhaps we want a LT to replace Smith...but is that really a big need?

what offensive player would ahve a chance of making this team next year?

You left it open for him to answer QB. lol.

There was no one left on the bard at that point. Lamb was the highest rated player on the board at that point. However, there were several guys on this forum who thought Justin Jefferson would be the best receiver in the class and they were right. Jefferson appears to be a true #1 with speed and size that Lamb lacks. Lamb at least has some fight in him, but he is like the toy dog with a lot of fight but he can't do anything with it because he lacks the proportions. I think Lamb fell because he ran a 4.5 40 and in the NFL today, that is too slow. Teams are looking for size/speed combination at WR.

Patrick Queen was available, but I don't think the Cowboys would have considered a LB with LVE and Smith on the roster. In 2021, they better think about it hard because their LBs are terrible.

Imagine thinking you determine all your draft picks based on current roster need.

You know, when I clicked this thread I honestly thought this was going to be about Justin Jefferson. To which I was gonna just say it wasn't a mistake, as much as we hit a triple but it could have been an in the park home run if we didn't admire the hit for a second or two.

But for this thread to be about picking a defensive player...when none of the ones picked after did much of anything...I don't get it

Who would you have taken who could have been as equal of an impact
Chaisson sure hasn’t been so far
Lamb was the right move
Passing a much more talented player to fill a need is why much of the top 10 teams picking each year remain the same for years
Jury is out on Chaisson so far but he did show improvement as the season wore on.

What you are talking about is reaching for a specific need, not addressing them. What D position didn't this team need? When do they address that? Answer, later.

BPA is a myth unless a team has no needs because the off season is all about addressing that and improving. Did the Cowboys improve with Lamb?

Yes, it was a mistake because it was all for flash and splash while bobbing around on the ocean, it was a pick for applause. It was all luxury for a team deep in needs.
It was the right pick! Guy has a chance to be a 1,500+ WR with Dak Prescott

Best offensive player outside of Dak Prescott by a hundred miles.

Draft to your strength. Tying to plug every hole gets you nowhere

Lamb was the best pick they could have made.

A passing offense is priority #1 in the NFL and whatever a team chooses to make #2 is way, way behind that.
They chose to put the D behind that and ended up 6-10.

They were already the #2 pass offense in the league in 2019.

Chaisson is not a good player. 51% of the team snaps only 1 sack and 19 tackles. No thx
Watch his college tape he wasnt even good. He rarely beat anyone 1 on 1 and basically got drafted because of his measurables and being on one of the best college teams in history

Our defense and season wouldnt have changed with chaisson being the pick

Typically you reach when you draft on need over value. Lamb was the correct pick at 17. That being said, this upcoming draft hopefully the right value falls to us at 10 on the defensive side.

Not sure how someone can watch Lamb play and think it was a mistake. But hey you do you
Because I watch the D play and btw, did you watch Justin Jefferson play?

You are doing exactly what the Joneses do, making it about the player and not the team. I have nothing against Lamb and watched him play at OU for years but he was not a need.

It was between lamb and chaisson and if you saw chaisson play this was a home run pick for us. Chaisson is another taco

The case some make is the value of Lamb at 17. Was he not a value at 16, 15, 14, 13? Why did those GM's pass on him? Because they're GM's with their jobs on the line to improve the team, not take a bow for a draft pick.

Another case is what D player was worth that pick? Chaisson? The answer is any D player that could help the worst D in the league and worst in Cowboys history. He didn't have to be a world beater, just a player they could count on to be 1 of the 11.

1 of 11. How many do they have now? If they'd used that on a D player, might they be closer than they are now? And what if he doesn't work out? Then they'd know and keep going back to the well.

I saw all of the celebrating here when they took Lamb and few asking why was he available? Partly because most GM's were trying to fill needs and partly because they didn't have him at 6th on their board.

He was the Cowboys first pick and led them in drops and was 2nd in the league in drops but his fans here will make excuses for him. And WR is the most plentiful position in the league.

This draft should be the easiest for the Cowboys, if they go D as they should have last year. Their needs are plenty and the only position they don't need with that first pick is DE.

The Lamb pick was a mistake and I had 0 doubt about that then or now. However, my greatest doubt about this team remains the same, they're just not good at talent evaluation and compound that by doubling down on some of their selections because they look at it from an ego standpoint. If it is mine, it must be good.

Lamb? No thank you, give me the beef!

A past post briefly discussed defensive and offensive scouting and compared how players chosen on the offensive side have usually turned out good whereas the defensive draft picks not so much.

Not sure if there is one central superior offensive development and coaching program that causes this but it has appeared that high offensive selections outperform the defensive picks regularly over the years.

So I guess my likely suspects list is to include Scouting, Defensive Coordinator, position coaches and development.

Sounds like the whole defensive organizational infrastructure needs an overhaul.

My .02.

You can mumble off anything you want, but he has already proved all he needs as to why it was a hands down absolute great pick at 17.
You have your opinion, but I have a good feeling it is in the utmost minority of one.
