One of the biggest bright spots this season was the emergence of Dalton Schultz, who has proven to be a formidable TE and of starter quality. No reason to waste a top draft pick on a TE, give Schultz the offseason to improve even further and we got ourselves a reliable TE.

He's not going to terrify anyone like Kelce or Waller, but he's definitely serviceable until Jarwin (who's got a little more pop) is ready to go.
The fan-base has been wanting a TE with more "pop" since the early 2010's. Frankly, I don't see the need for it. Schultz played very similar to Witten, and served as a security blanket and go-to-guy on key downs.

Is he a top 3 TE? No, but he can certainly develop into a top 7 sort of guy.

And honestly, I wanted Witten gone around 2015, that's just not what you're looking for in a TE in today's game.

Also, you just paid Jarwin like a starter and he's one year into the deal, he's going to get the nod either way and Schultz will likely be playing for another team once his contract is up. I guess you could cut Jarwin and save some space (only a few million in dead cap)?

In Jarwin's entire career, he has had basically the exact same production Schultz had this season.

Schultz is the more valuable commodity in my book, he has proven he can capably start and perform well for an entire season.

Schultz was a bright spot but an elite player at TE would take the offense to another level. I certainly wouldn’t use a top pick on one but we’re not set at the position. Schultz took advantage of his opportunity and exceeded expectations but he’s not a great player.

He is really good at his job and he’s not terrible at getting vertical but he can eat up all the underneath coverage.

I’m still shocked that I’m saying this but Schultz is not a jag. He’s an above average NFL TE.

I think he was the biggest surprise of the season for me.

Kyle Pitts will be our #1. I am having this vision that Jerry picks this guy. I may flip my lid but that what I'm seeing. And Shultz was one of the few bright spots this year

To be fair, Jarwin has lived in the shadow of Witten (who should have been gone a long time ago) just like Schultz did. Unfortunately for Jarwin, his time to shine came in a year with a season ending injury.

I'm not trying to limit the impact hat Schultz had, he had a really good season for a guy who few people outside of Dallas had heard of going in to the season, but if you have a shot at a guy like Pitts who is the modern-TE, you take a guy like that over a Witten-like Schultz.

sorry No comparison to young Witten who consistently beat LBs and safeties even the pro bowlers.
Schultz didn't shake and juke coverage guys in one on one near on a level that Witten did.

Plus Witten was a very good in-line blocker in Prime of his career ; nether Schultz or Jarwin are effective in line blockers.

And you're right, he will suit our offense just fine and adequately.. until Jarwin's healthy return.
Schultz worked well with sensing openings in zones and working underneath in moving the chains, but he doesn't have Jarwiin's quicks and ability to race the deep middle seams.

If the defenders have 2nd round grades or close to it then I’d be ok with it.

Id hate it but I can understand it.

Anyone think Leatherwood can play guard? I need to watch more of him.

It’s sad to think about but I don’t think we will be able to add any impact to this roster. Status quo incoming.

I think they’ll just sell McCarthy having a full offseason and a healthy roster. We’ll buy it too.

Yep and I don't really want targets taken away from Gallop, Lamb or Cooper.

Jarwin can be a deeper threat and that is fine to mix it up sometimes.

I don't know what kind of consistency Shultz has as a blocker but he did screw up the block on one of CeeDees bubble screens however - that could improve.

As desperate as this team is for new blood on defense it would not be shocking if Pitts TE from Florida was by far the top rated player on their draft board at 10. Remember this is Jerry we are talking about here.
