Drama on the sideline with players and coaching staff. LOL Doug has created a huge mess.

https://www.inquirer.com/eagles/dou...en-hurts-nate-sudfeld-joe-judge-20210104.html

When Doug Pederson pulled Jalen Hurts for Nate Sudfeld early in the fourth quarter in Sunday’s season finale against Washington, many Eagles players and coaches were shocked and outraged, team sources told The Inquirer. Some were angry. Two defensive players had to be held back from approaching Pederson. Center Jason Kelce and another offensive starter went to the coach to ask him why he had pulled the starting quarterback with the Eagles trailing by only three. Hurts was distraught, as well. Even though he had been told Wednesday that there was a chance Sudfeld could play, he couldn’t understand why Pederson would make the switch, sources close to the situation said. The NBC broadcast caught Hurts on the bench after he was replaced apparently saying, “That’s not right.”

I hope it turns into a complete trainwreck next season.

Is it tanking and a kill shot to the integrity of the game when a team rests starters with their playoff spot secured and nothing to gain?

No. That's always been done and to a certain extent accepted.

It's also been fine historically for teams to sit players with any type of injury small or otherwise, as the Eagles did on Sunday.

It's never been fine to field a team of any sort and then not try to win with that team. The Steelers, as an example while resting for the playoffs did sit starters but they give Cleveland all they could handle and didn't decide to pull Rudolph when the game got close.

What the Eagles did was egregious and should never be acceptable.

Did any of you screaming that this is no big thing etc.. stop for one second and wonder why NFL players and coaches are getting upset by this particular scenario?

Its nonsense to say the game should be played with one team playing their starters but pulling them out anytime they get close to a lead.

You're nitpicking here. What rule are they breaking? Bad coaching? Bad timing? Because it is timing that we're talking about. Had they started Sudfeld no one would say anything. Yet the intent and results would be the same. So based on what rule should the Eagles, Steelers, and Chiefs be punished for breaking?

Exactly, its always been accepted because it doesn't change the outcome of who makes the playoffs. If Dallas was 9-7 and Philly did this so they missed the playoffs, the same fans here would have torches and pitchforks out.

Picture a scenario where Dallas is in a game that decides a Division Title. Dallas pulls within 3 and then pulls Dak Prescott to play one of the Jerry's grandsons. Is that still cool?

That's the point. They didn't start Sudfeld and there is no rule for the Refs to enforce on subbing in a crappy substitute. But if you do it at the exact point you might win and do it for no good reason, its a matter for the NFL front office.

And honestly, I think the fact the Giants got screwed is the only reason there is a snowball's chance the league will do anything. I doubt anything will happen and it doesn't really bug me, but the league has to have some standards (or at least pretend to). That's why the NBA put in the rules they did.

I think there was a very good reason. Hurts had a 25 QBR and had throw for 72 yards through 3 quarters. Quite often benching the QB will rally the team.

In general, sure. Bledsoe benched for Romo is an example of that. But the Eagles were clearly playing better with Hurts than Wentz (ha!) and they benched him for a career backup with 37 pass attempts in his entire NFL career. Not exactly a secret weapon.

Why not put Wentz in?

What’s funny is if this happened to the Cowboys people would say Goodell told Lurie to do it, nothing will happen to the the Eagles because the league hates the Cowboys, if it happened to the Giants there would have already been the start of a full scale investigation so Goodell could support his favorite team, yadda yadda yadda. Yet in reality, nothing will happen no matter if it was us or the Giants.

Had the NBA not changed the rules of the draft, they wouldn't have to make the rules that they did. Their actions had consequences. Instead of addressing what led to those consequences, they patched it up.

I don't like what Philly did anymore than any other non Eagles fan. I just don't see what could be done about it. Punish them for subbing out Hurts? What if Sudfeld came back and won? Would they still be punished? Or are we now basing a punishment on the results of the game? You can't use they didn't do everything in their power to win the game excuse. Teams violate that every year without consequence.

I refer you to my example of Dallas putting in Jerry's grandson at QB. There is absolutely no reason to believe Sudfeld is a better player and no reason to sub him in at a critical point.

Its like comparing a superconservative Scott Linehan game plan to punting on first down. They are just different worlds.

I can't imagine anything will come out of this, but I would wet my pants if the NFL moved Philly's pick down because of this nonsense.

Dude, the only thing better than Dallas winning a SB would be that. That is a close second. Even though I don't think it would be fair to the Eagles. However, I'm pretty sure the players union gave Goodell the power to make these judgement calls.

DON'T GO SOFT ON US!!!

I can't imagine it will happen, but something should. It will probably be like the situations with the Patriots where the league announces the Eagles are fined fifty bucks.

This issue has been an argument on NY and Philly radio stations for part of the day. Trying to distinguish between purposely losing, and not caring whether you win or lose. There is a difference. Not much of one, but it exists.

"Thank you Caller, since you are an Eagles Fan I'll defer to your knowledge of losing football games...."
