He should be gone. But lets not for a second think the issue with the defense is only with its coordinator. This teams needs to look themselves in the mirror and realize the defense needs almost a complete overhaul. Their Ends are good, although you really can't count on Gregory. Diggs looks to have the making of a good starting corner. Gallimore was a bright spot as a rookie and Donovan Wilson may be able to be a passable long term starter. Other than that, this team needs a ton. There is no way they will be able to grab A level talent on all three levels in one offseason. Hopefully they can find at least one and then drastically improve their depth. I think the best case we can hope for is league average next year. And that will prove to be difficult.
Average would be a great improvement for this defense
They were an absolute dumpster fire last year.

I'll go the other way, Nolan will be fired and McCarthy will accept this as he has no leverage due to his own failings. Jerry thinks this is on the coaches not the players
He said as much just after the 4 game losing skid.

He's still here because he's probably staying. It appears everyone is getting a pass.

This is exactly what I am afraid of.

JJ is waiting for the news cycle to pass and people to lose interest. They will tell the media we are "doing our yearly evaluations" and then around SB time they will come out and issue some kind of statement about how Covid and injuries in 2020 resulted in "unprecedented adversity" but that the team "responded well" to the coaching staff down the stretch, and so continuity going forward is the prudent course of action. With the injured guys coming back-- "we expect to contend for a SB in 2021". Gonna be awesome...

You might be able to blame the horrible defense on injuries and lack of practice time due to the virus.
But what about the in game stuff like losing containment on both sides of the field over and over game after game.
Abandoning your lanes and allowing for huge gashes up the middle. Coverage train wrecks on every 3rd and long?
Surely Jerry has enough guts to force MM hand on this.

Clock is ticking.

The last four games saved his job imo. To be clear I'm not making an argument for him, that is just what I think happened. I believe Jerry didn't want to admit it was a bad hire regardless. Then the last four games we made a mini run and got a bunch of turnovers. Jerry likes to give the benefit of the doubt and he will look at our lack of an off season and our injuries and give Nolan one more season. This isn't necessarily what I believe is best, but it is imo why Nolan isn't going anywhere.

Jerry on his radio show had every chance to say he was being retained. But chose not to...

yeh jerry just like he did with Linehan, was evasive and to not mentioned Nolan's name,.. or not directly answer the direct question of Nolan being possibly fired.
I expected that all the way.

-But listening to Jerry, he kept emphasizing " discipline" … Not " improvement " .. but the word "discipline". The big yuck on Nolan was how massive confusion and
undisciplined his defense was.

-That's me and others trying to read between the lines and guessing on Jerry's words, but that did not sound like a vote of confidence, for this current DC.
I try to hear if Stephen will throw any hints or indication of disappointing concerns that also will be a part of an agreement and move to move on from Nolan.

-But I cant think and imagine after Jerry's message of "discipline " under what was a Cowboys club record of among worse defense in Cowboys history- says Nolan will be returning.
Like many others i'd like it be a let's hurry then process as to not lose out on other qualified outside DC candidate possibilities.

Nolan will do Jones and McCarthy a favor and announce he is stepping away as Cowboys DC to take on an opportunity elsewhere (college, the media, etc.)
--save them from wiping the egg off their faces.

I've been a Nolan fan throughout his career.

He's gotta go.

There is no way we should be this bad against the run.

i beg to differ you, We will be this bad against the run when you are playing a 2nd round DT (HILL) should have been a 4th rounder, and your playing a 3rd round pick in Gali, these guys are rotation guys not starters. then your rotation guys are street FA and undrafted guys that cannot hold the jock of the 2 guys that are your starters. then on What is thought to be a passing down you have a DE thats 250 - 280 and another guy with bad hips as your rush dt, but they get run on your going to have the worst defense in the league.

i think you need to get GOOD strong players that can push pocket (not be world beater pass rushers) but can hold point and scrape to get RB when they come to there hole. keep your LBs clean so they can run sideline to sideline, give Nolan 1 more year with better DTs if it sucks next year at the end and you still have the crap in game management, toss him out with who ever else.

Jerry says he cares about winning but he cares about money more... when’s the last time Jerry fired a coach he had to pay? He lets them ride it out.

Like I said, its just my opinion. I appreciate the reply though. Maybe I'm wrong and we make a move. Can't say I'd be shocked. Im not expecting it though.
