  • Should (not will, but should) Trevor Lawrence go 1st overall in the 2021 draft? I think he should, he's got a better track record than Fields.
  • Will Lawrence be the best QB in this draft class? Should be. So much of how a player's success in the NFL depends on what kind of situation he goes to, but I'm confident in the Urban Meyer Jaguars rebuild and I am definitely confident in Lawrence.
  • Will Lawrence be an NFL bust? If Lawrence isn't at least an average starting quarterback, I will rip my shirt off and start eating it. He's too developed and pro-ready, to bust, short of an unforseeable career-ending injury.

When I watched tape of Lawrence, the thing that struck was how unexpectedly covered his receivers usually were. I thought that was really weird for a big school. I started counting 1-1,000 2-1,000 while watching qb tapes. I think that explains. He throws the ball early. Usually before the thousand part on the 3-1,000. That's before his receivers have time to get wide open the way that receivers at power programs usually can. That indicates, to my untrained eye at least, that he reads quickly and throws it. Which is the biggest adjustment to the pros.

Justin Fields, for comparison, has some real arm talent and running ability. But when you do the Count Test on him, he almost never throws before 3-1,000 and often into 4 or 5. That doesn't mean he can't adjust. But he'll need to. And you just don't know.

When you go to a big program, my sense is that it trains you to hold the ball just a little longer so your receivers will get wide open. That's not the way the pro game is played, and I bet it's hard to lose that habit.

So I'm impressed with that about Lawrence, that he played like a pro quarterback even with the advantages of a big college program.

1. Yes, he should go #1 although I haven't deeply investigated every player.
2. I like Zach Wilson, too.
3. I don't think so. The main reason for busting, is that you can't adjust to faster players and tighter coverage. He already seems to have that down. I'd be pretty surprised if he were not at least an OK quarterback.

At this stage, we seem to now have enough hate going on toward Trevor Lawrence that we may as well document it.

Three Questions
  1. Should (not will, but should) Trevor Lawrence go 1st overall in the 2021 draft?
  2. Will Lawrence be the best QB in this draft class?
  3. Will Lawrence be an NFL bust?

Own up to your claims....pro or con

I've already seen several people say he'll bust so those folks would answer: No, No, Yes
Those that think he's the top guy probably will answer: Yes, Yes, No
No idea. Unless you watch every game of his college career, spoken with his coaches, spoken with some of his team mates how could anyone know? It's interesting reading those who do though.
