they have to fix the run defense.

this is an interesting hire.

DQ is probably the best DC available.

I wonder how big Mike feels about it? He tried to sneak the two passing coordinators through with the first two interviews.

DQ is a DC with HC experience and Super Bowl experience. In theory, he could take over for big Mike without any problems.

has to give big Mike some motivation in 2021.

I don't think DQ is the one who takes over when MM gets fired. It's setting up KM to have 2 really good coordinators so he can focus on offense and the team as a whole. With DQ and fossal as your coordinators Kellen could start his HC career in 2022 if Mike fails again.

You come here because we are in the worst division in the league. We had the worst defense in the league. 2 of the 3 division opponents have big QB questions. Turn this defense around and you are in the spotlight for all to see with the largest franchise.
easy to say, but hard to do, especially if your just the dc.

He certainly is not a breath of fresh air. I think someone who has a better understanding of today's NFL might have been a better choice. Just not sure who that is.

I have no real idea. I hope they are right. But it wasn't one that I feel excited about.

I think Quinn is a fine selection.
He took two different teams to SBs.
He does come from a system Dallas defense knows well.
We obviously do not have the talent of the LOB.
But we also have about half this defense turning over so can fill gaps as needed in 4-5 starting spot son defense.
They can choose the CB they like best at 10 in all likelihood.
OR they can sign Richard Sherman and use pick 10 on the top DT or whatever else.
They can add the type of LB they want out of this draft.

Quinn has been more successful more recently than Nolan was.
And while he uses more multiple stuff than recognized he also uses a base 4 down DL that is a hybrid system.
It allows for some flex there and will almost surely use DLaw well.
With bigger DL inside it also protects LB.

If you are looking to make a SB run next year and wanted a quick fix DC who can elevate the play of the guys you have already paid I really like this move.
If you wanted a 5 year plan this may not be the guy for you.

Yes..with the caveat it all hinges on who we name as the dline coach. THAT is where we need a great coach. Can we all realize too, we need to cut loose Leon Lett? The guy hasnt helped us. How does he keep getting rehired year after year? SERIOUSLY.

He's a helluva defensive coordinator. Dallas must improve the personnel though.
^^ THIS. One doesn't work without the other. It still takes gritty smart players in the trenches on D. WE currently are void of that, except an up and coming Gallimore. That is it. Gallimore,Diggs and wilson are the building blocks on D.Everyone else needs to be blown out and put on notice. My hunch is Quinn will do so in short order.

His title is ASSISTANT defensive line coach. Not sure he has that much to do with whether or not the defensive line is any good. If the player's technique is good but he's being put in a place where he can't utilize his skills, for example, the defense's shortcomings may have little to do with Leon's coaching.

I just think we can't know much about whether or not Lett should go, his work is likely mostly unseen....

fair enough...but sometimes CHANGE can be what the doctor ordered. He has been here along time and its hard to keep doing the same things with the same results.

No young innovative defensive position coaches/coordinators out there?
It seems we're always reaching for retreads (Ryan, Marinelli, Nolan). Blasts from the past. And what does that get us?
Homage to old school and getting schooled by fresh offensive minds.

Hard to say. there is a lot to fill in at this point. Is he capable in the right conditions? yes.

Fair enough, but don't "throw the baby out with the bathwater". Review and evaluate personnel every year is the way to go, and I'd be very surprised if the Cowboys don't do that, after all Jerry is first a foremost a businessman, would seem logical he'd apply businessman principles to his team.

Landry did that and we see how that worked....

true but all these coaches believe in their abilities especially in the area they are most familiar with. DQ had to at least think he can do better than last place with the same players. And i'm sure they talked about draft, FA strategies etc one would believe so anyway.

Did Jerry Jones make the right move here?
I do. better than nolan. can Quinn capture some of his magic he had in Seattle. hopefully. some coaches aren't meant to be head coaches but are better coordinators, ala Wade Phillips......I think Quinn's approach is aggressive, simple defense with heavy reliance on front 7 to create pressure. so I expect a heavy dose of DL men and building some depth in that position.

I am anxious to see what he will do with Jaylon.....he is here probably one more year because of the contract he has and due to Covid, we will be hard pressed to cut him and eat a 10M dead cap space.

Might as well bring Richard back....LOL....Maybe we can get the Seahawks old defense back. On a more serious note. I'm in a wait and see mode. Has the league made him obsolete as far as his defensive philosophy? His time in Atlanta may say yes. Stay tuned I guess.

Probably about the best hire for the class of coach Jerry and Spaulding would go after. They are not going to go with any unproven coach without a babysitter like Kellen Moore had with Garrett/now McCarthy. Jerry's days of taking those risks without backups is over.

I despised the Marinelli defense and was glad when he was removed. Quite frankly, once the dead weight free agents were canned the defense was playing better under Nolan than it did under Marinelli and I don't think Nolan was particularly good.

Now we are going to go back to the "prevent victory" defensive style that got Garrett fired.

Brilliant.

I have been a Cowboys fan for a long time and I don't switch allegiance. There have been periods where my interest waned though and I didn't pay much attention. I thought the team was headed in the right direction but I was wrong. I have a feeling we are heading into another "don't pay much attention" periods for the Cowboys.
