Yeah, I feel he's been pushed higher than he should be because it's a really poor OL group.
I'd take Surtain for sure in this situation.
Love the 2nd round pick.

I wouldn't hate the pick, wouldn't love it either. Yes, many think Slater is the 2nd best tackle in the class and is a legitimate blue-chip prospect, where others view him as a Guard only prospect due to his lack of length. If you don't see Tyron returning, hand in the card, but otherwise rather take Surtain or try to move back.

Cowboys- Rashawn Slater OT North Western

SCOUTING REPORT

His size and length are not ideal to play tackle at the NFL level. He is listed at 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds, but will likely measure smaller at the NFL Combine. Slater’s movement skills helped cover up for his lack of size and length, but the NFL will not be so kind to him. This is the main reason that many surmise that he will be moved inside.

He plays hard and fast, which generates power, but he needs to add strength to add even more power. If he is moved inside, he will be dealing with some big bodies and will need to be even stronger to help move them. Slater also struggled going against powerful pass rushers on the outside, so he’ll need to learn to deal with power rushers on the interior if he is moved.

At times, his pad level can get too high and he loses leverage. He is already a little tight, so when he stands up straight, he loses a lot of power. If he keeps his pad level low, he will be able to be a better overall lineman at whatever position he plays at the next level.

Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick

Agreed on Surtain and here is one Scouting Report on Slater

Slater's a lot like La'El - same size, same reliance on athleticism over technique at times.

I'm fine taking him at 10, but I wouldn't do it as an immediate starter at tackle. Like La'El, he'd be best suited starting at guard.

I didn’t see the game but supposedly he shut down Chase Young. I don’t see Miami passing on Sewell. So I don’t see Slater getting out of the top 8.

The only two Offensive Players that I'm taking over a Defensive Player would be Lawrence or Sewell

Oh wow he is short and has short arms. Sounds like a guard. The Virginia Tech tackle might be the guy then.

Slater is kind of like the Surtain at the Tackle position. Technically great, high floor, low ceiling player.

He is short, has not played this year and has short arms. Hard pass unless we trade down.

The full two rounds.

1. Jacksonville - Trevor Lawrence QB Clemson
2. N.Y. Jets - Zach Wilson QB BYU
3. Miami (Houston) - DeVonte Smith WR Alabama
4. Atlanta - Justin Fields QB Ohio St.
5. Cincinnati - Penei Sewell T Oregon
6. Philadelphia - Ja'Marr Chase WR LSU
7. Detroit - Micah Parsons LB Penn St.
8. Carolina - Trey Lance QB North Dakota St.
9. Denver - Caleb Farley CB Virginia Tech

10 Dallas - Rashawn Slater T Northwestern
Many fans will disapprove of any pick that isn't a defensive player, but the Cowboys' offensive line woes were a constant theme all season. Not only does Slater have NFL ready talent, he offers the versatility to play tackle or guard, giving the Cowboys much needed flexibility.

11. N.Y. Giants - Kyle Pitts TE Florida
12. San Francisco - Patrick Surtain II CB Alabama
13. L.A. Chargers - Christian Darrisaw T Virginia Tech
14. Minnesota - Gregory Rousseau EDGE Miami
15. New England - Jaylen Waddle WR Alabama
16. Arizona - Jaycee Horn CB South Carolina
17. Las Vegas - Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah LB Notre Dame
18. Miami - Kwity Paye EDGE Michigan
19. Washington - Alijah Vera-Tucker T/G USC
20. Chicago - Teven Jenkins T Oklahoma St.
21. Indianapolis - Tyson Campbell CB Georgia
22. Tennessee - Zaven Collins LB Tulsa
23. N.Y. Jets (Seattle) - Azeez Ojulari EDGE Georgia
24. Pittsburgh - Mac Jones QB Alabama
25. Jacksonville (L.A.Rams) - Christian Barmore DT Alabama
26. Cleveland - Jaelan Phillips EDGE Miami
27. Tampa Bay - Najee Harris RB Alabama
28. Baltimore - Joseph Ossai EDGE Texas
29. New Orleans - Chris Olave WR Ohio St.
30. Buffalo - Jalen Mayfield T/G Michigan
31. Green Bay - Daviyon Nixon DT Iowa
32. Kansas City - Kadarius Toney WR Florida

33. Jacksonville - Wyatt Davis G Ohio St.
34. N.Y. Jets - Liam Eichenberg T Notre Dame
35. Atlanta - Jayson Oweh EDGE Penn St.
36. Miami (Houston) Travis Etienne RB Clemson
37. Philadelphia - Nick Bolton LB Missouri
38. Cincinnati - Asante Samuel CB Florida St.
39. Carolina - Samuel Cosmi T Texas
40. Denver - Jordan Smith EDGE UAB
41. Detroit - Rashod Bateman WR Minnesota
42. N.Y. Giants - Carlos Basham EDGE Wake Forest
43. San Francisco - Joe Tryon EDGE Washington

44. Dallas - Trevon Moehrig FS TCU
The last time the Cowboys drafted a safety in the first two rounds was when they took Roy Williams in 2002, so Moehrig would go counter to the organization's drafting history. But he would give Dallas a much needed upgrade over free safety Xavier Woods.

45. Jacksonville (Minnesota) - Pat Freiermuth TE Penn St.
46. New England - Levi Onwuzurike DT Washington
47. L.A. Chargers - Eric Stokes Cb Georgia
48. Las Vegas - Jay Tufele DT USC
49. Arizona - Chazz Surratt LB North Carolina
50. Miami - Josh Myers C Ohio St.
51. Washington - Terrace Marshall WR LSU
52. Chicago - Dyami Brown WR North Carolina
53. Tennessee - Rondale Moore WR Purdue
54. Indianapolis - Alex Leatherwood T Alabama
55. Pittsburgh - Elijah Molden CB Washington
56. Seattle -Trey Smith G Tennessee
57. L.A. Rams - Dylan Moses LB Alabama
58. Tampa Bay - Tommy Togiai DT Ohio St.
59. Baltimore - Amon-Ra St. Brown WR USC
60. Cleveland - Ifeatu Melifonwu CB Syracuse
61. New Orleans - Jevon Holland FS Oregon
62. Buffalo - Rashad Weaver EDGE Pittsburgh
63. Green Bay - Greg Newsome II CB Northwestern
64. Kansas City - Dayo Odeyingbo DL Vanderbilt

I could live with this merely for the Moehrig acquisition. I think there's no possible way he lasts that long though. He's the best FS in a pretty weak S draft.

I dunno if Slater ends up a left tackle in the NFL.

And I don't see the value taking another OG/RT that high.

8.8 in dead cap vs 14 cap hit...not that much cap relief. After next year it’s 5 dead vs 15 cap hit.

To me I think you have to stick with Tyron 1 more year (provided he’s medically cleared obviously). His play is still very good and his salary cap hit is actually extremely reasonable for a LT.

You can still draft a LT if the prospect is the best available to play LG and eventually take over for Tyron.
The problem with this theory is that if you want to get some salvage value out of him, he is probably worth more in draft pick compensation now than later.

Could go either way...depends on your optimism about the somewhat mysterious neck injury/surgery. If he goes back to playing 13 games at a pro bowl level like he did ‘16-‘19 he’ll still have plenty of value. If the surgery was a correctable issue that won’t linger the time off honestly might actually have done Tyron some good. But also no denying the injuries are mounting and time is running out...just a matter if you think the end is now or he can make it another 3/4 years (insanely he still won’t be even 35).
