Cowboys need to resign Dak before Baker and Josh Allen reset the market

I don’t believe McCarthy was hired to develop another QB or rebuild this team.

I’d argue he was hired to win with Dak. And win now.

Mayfield is leading an ascending team. Dak is not. Its really that simple. You cannot build a team that can compete around Dak's expected 40M salary. Last I checked, the goal in the NFL is a super bowl not to make sure your pet cat gets paid. Aside from some big numbers posted with the help of the best supporting cast in the NFL and mostly with the team in a hole, Dak hasn't done much. You certainly can't point to any playoff success. He's got one home wildcard win....in 5 years.
We have a defense that allowed a franchise-record 473 points against and was 31st in run D, and you talk about scarficing one of your better offensive players?!?

Dak was on a record pace before injury. It would be asennine to get rid of him because you can't figure out the cap and have a better defensive draft.

The fact that you even thought about suggesting Rivers, Stafford and Cousins tells me how you evaluate qb's...

Why would the Cowboys pay Dak based on what guys who win playoff games make? If I hail a cab, I don't pay the guy what an F1 driver makes....

They don’t have to believe they have what the Chiefs do. That’s not what market value is all about.

The next market setting contract doesn’t have to be a better QB than Mahomes and where fans are misguided. They only have to be worth as much or more to the team.

If Baltimore with Jackson or Allen with Buffalo for example determine their QB’s are as valuable to their success as Mahomes is to the Chiefs success then we could certainly see contracts as much or more.

Market settings contracts aren’t necessarily about who’s the best talent . Fans are identifying only because we portray Mahomes as the best with the current biggest contract. But this isn’t always the case.

Remember when Joe Flacco became the highest paid quarterback, with guys like Manning, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees playing at top levels. Contracts are about timing and availability of an upgrade. And even if you don't think Dak is the best in the league, it is a hard sell to claim an upgrade is available.

If it were as easy as you suggest, don't you think we would be loaded every year?

I'm not saying it's easy. No path is easy. But the fact is the Cowboys had Dak for less than a million and didn't bring in big free agents. I am comfortable with the Cowboys paying Dak who I know is good and trusting them to draft well (which we've seen them do). We haven't seen them hit on premiere defensive free agents in a long time so that seems like the more difficult path to me.

I'm saying it doesn't work. I mean, I've seen this before. It's a slow burn but once the fire starts, it burns just as hot. No, this will not work but whatever.

I don't think so. I think that the discussion is about available cap and where you want to spend it. We've already seen that we can produce similar results with less talent, so to speak, at QB. I think that the possibility of drafting a young player with similar or perhaps superior talent and a really cheap cap hit for 5 years could be very attractive to the team. Now, I'm not saying this is what they are going to do but I would definitely not say that viable options at QB, via draft or FA or both are not there. They are there.

Passing yards. He was on pace to throw for 5-6k yds... conservatively. The math is hard to disprove.

I agree. The math says that we win right around 5 or 6 games with Dak healthy. Games won, championships won, that's how great seasons are measured. Who gives a flip if your QB throws for 5k yards if you are sitting home during the playoffs? I mean, this game is not played so that the QB can just go out and try to set records all the time. This game is played for Championships. I just don't understand how that is lost on our fan base.

By all means, let's make a Goff, Watson, Wentz, Newton, Cousins mistake.

Yards mean less than nothing.

Roethlisberger through for 500 yards and completed more passes than any QB in NFL history in the playoffs this weekend.

And got his butt whooped.

So you understand, many of us here have seen this before in Dallas. We are old enough to have watched this play out in the past. It's not an attack on you, per say. To be honest, it's more of an attempt to try and get you to see the point or perhaps educate. Now, you may not be open to that but that's what is going on here. This is not personal on you. I guess many of us are just tired of seeing this organization make the same mistakes repeatedly.

It's not personal.
