What's everyone's take on MM's first year? I'm not sold on him personally, he made some boneheaded decisions for someone that's been a HC as long as he has...IMO

I'd give him a C minus. Just enough to cheer him on next year with better talent.

Yes, this was my take, he had a lot of in games mistakes.
However how many were from them having to try to create something happen. To change the game. How many stupid play calls from Moore from the same situation.

A team is missing half their players or more, and down 3 scores, what do you do? So half of those calls depended on the situation, but still too many head scratchers as well.
I am still on the fence about him, but leaning too, yes he needs another year.

Jazz, like you I'm still on the fence, but I think you made a couple excellent points that others are not considering:
"However how many were from them having to try to create something happen. To change the game."
"A team is missing half their players or more, and down 3 scores, what do you do?"

That explains some of those supposed errors. His team was composed of more backups than starters and they were playing from behind because the defense was nowhere near up to the task, so like you said he was reaching for some way to make something happen. Problem was, what resulted was usually not good. Well surprise surprise surprise, what did anybody expect from a team of backups?
Enough knee jerk reactions, give the guy another year to see what he can do.
If people can survive 10 freaking years of Garrett, they ought to be able to survive another season of McCarthy.

Bad free agent signings on defense. A team clearly unprepared for the season.

The positive I see is making changes midseason. Ate the bad free agent signings and moved on. Made some changes to the D. Moved Martin out to T. Given the losses of Dak and the oline, held the offense together well. I like the Moore and McCarthy combo in theory. Very complementary.

Big positive to me that they bit the bullet on the free agent failures.

At least he can learn? Correct course? That's a refreshing change after "We Do What We Do", and Garrett doubling down on his mistakes.

The whole org has had problems drafting defense from 2016 on. Maybe bringing in Quinn will help turn things around. That isn't much of an endorsement for McCarthy, but some hope for the team with McCarthy as HC.

Simply question:
If McCarthy had been on a 1 year contract, would we pick him as the best HC available for 2021?

Not outright, at least. We'd be shopping the field, and be pretty disappointed to have Jerry come home from the store with McCarthy in the bag.

Frame the question as - is he the best available HC, and the answer is a clear no.

Offense: B Overcame some adversary and was pretty solid
Defense: F - It was a train wreck
Special Team: C+ - Started badly but came good
Overall: C - If he was a defensive co-ordinator in the past I’d be more harsh

I think the fact McCarthy had to wear a mask on the sidelines he was depriving his brain of oxygen and made some bad decisions. I really thought Rivera should of been offered the job. He probably wouldnt of taken it though. Being a defensive coach he saw what the Commanders Dline looked like and wanted that job.

I was disenchanted like the rest of us so much with Garrett..

I supportsd any change practically.

But McCarthy took on a job I think was underestimated by McCarthy.

I started seeing him backtrack with calling plays to not calling plays and bringing back Moore.

I can understand him seeing the need to bring as much good mojo as possible wanting to keep Dak grounded with all the changes.

He won that battle as by antibodies measure..Dak took off like a rocket. Then his injury ended everything for us.

Not McCarthy's fault. The defense was an issue. But again not his fault. The guys we signed then cut nearly caused a rebellion on that side of the ball. That was not McCarthy's fault but he did get a grip long enough to win a few games and restore some identity there at the end.

I expected 8-8 at the beginning of TC and we ended up not far off that.

Had we had a healthy Dak we would have made the playoffs even with the OL injuries.

So I am not of the opinion this team is garbage. It needs another draft infusion and another careful FA approach and have a preseason.

Then let's get the chopping block out if nothing improves.

I don't know how you can use any word other than disastrous. I've never seen a pro team less prepared to play football than the September/October 2020 Cowboys.

That being said, here's how I try to objectively look at it:
  • Obviously none of us knew a pandemic was coming. The truth is, out of all the years we could have fired Garrett, we picked the absolute worst one. That's not a get-out-of-jail-free card for MM, because other orgs like WFT had similar challenges. But we seemed to handle it particularly poorly. Wondering if the complexity of Nolan's defense was just too much to learn in a virtual environment.
  • A wrath-of-God type of year for injuries. The injury hits started with Gerald McCoy and just kept coming. I've never seen a team so depleted, particularly the O-line. I think it would have been difficult for any coach to win with half a team.

Biggest Negatives:
  • Comically bad FA signings (not entirely MM's fault). Enabling non-competitive attitudes from Poe and Griffin for far too long. I don't think it's a coincidence that the team started to show life once we removed some of the bad apples.
  • Building/tolerating a lax culture. I just can't get over X. Woods', "Nobody plays hard all of the time" comments. Symptom of a larger problem (created long before MM got here, but part of his job was to fix it).
  • I still don't fully understand what has happened to Jaylon & LVE. They were good at football once, right? I understand that the DTs were unbelievably bad, but how many times did we see 54 & 55 sprinting to the wrong hole, or even jogging (looking at you 54)? Again, tolerated for way too long.
To sum up, I would judge MM's first season as a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad year. Hoping the sequel is better.

I liked his aggressivness on 4th down but man he kinda overdid it with stupid stuff like the Fake Punt in your own half.

Most of the game he just stood there and it seemed like the game is passing him.

He was less active than Garrett and that means sth.

To round it off he didnt challenge that obv non-catch in the last game which put us out of reach (which in hindsight was good because of the WFT win but still).

I wasnt really impressed by the hire, and to say he did just disappoint would be a nice way to say it.

Still i would give him this season to prove everybody wrong. The amount of injuries to Starters was just insane and COVID didnt allow a full Offseason.

So i give him that. But if next seasons turns out like this he can go to What-a-Burger or somewhere else.

He did not have a good year. However, McCarthy isn't the problem with the Cowboys. The problem with the team begins and ends with the last name Jones.

Didn't like the hire but to be fair, I can't judge him by this wierd season without minicamps and preseason gwhich I consider vital in a HC's first season with a new team.

Also consider the injuries which were excessive.

Terrible. Coaching Hires, especially on the Defensive side of the ball were horrific and the FAs were, in large part, big holes in the ocean where we simply threw all of our money away in.

Hopefully, next year is much better.

Talk about the worst possible situation to walk into! No offseason to implement anything. I mean no off season camps/training camp/preseason games or anything. Clearly it impacted the 2020 season more than expected. Then to lose so many players to injury. Add it up and the season was doomed. None of that was McCarthy's fault.
+1

No offseason for a new coaching staff and all the injuries is really difficult. The biggest bonehead move was to think you could completely change the D with no offseason though. Then their two "big" free agent defensive signings dont work out.

My take on McCarthy’s first year would require a lot of profanity.
