If the cap goes down it’s going to affect us signing top-tier free agents who can make an impact. Top-tier free agents are grossly over paid and we aren’t likely to have the cap space. We usually don’t go after top-tier free agents anyway. We look for cheap low to mid tier free agents like Poe and Ha Ha Clinton Dix. We’re hoping we can get something out of them like we did with Robert Quinn in 2019. It seems like every player who’s on the decline looking for a one year prove it deal is on our wish list.

If the cap goes down, contracts will be structured accordingly. You can pay players a lot of money without paying them a large portion of it their first year. Dallas will be able to do what it wants to do, but as you said, the Joneses don't go after top-tier free agents anyway. They go after cheap ones, which is why we end up with players like Poe and Dix.

Quinn wasn't a free agent and he wasn't really cheap. We traded a sixth-round pick for him and paid him $9.2 million. Our free agency system sucks and we need to change strategies. We might hit on a "bargain" signing like we did with Randall Cobb, but most of them turn out to have minimal to no real impact, like Poe, Dix, McCoy or George Iloka, Kerry Hyder and Christian Covington in 2019.

I agree I like the DE we have, I think it is hard to pass rush when you can't just cut these guys loose because instead they are concerned about stopping the run. I don't mean to sound like a broken record but we you can't stop the run it has an effect on the entire defense. You are always playing from a down and distance disadvantage. As for Gallimore I though he did a good job for a rookie and the experience he got by playing the 2nd half of the season hopefully pays off as h enters his 2nd season but we need someone next to him and Poe was a complete waste of time and Woods as a rotation guy is fine but not a guy I want to get majority of snaps to.

I interesting to see what Quinn thinks of Gallimore and Hill... I thought both showed flashes, I think Woods is a solid backup.

I think the money was right but length of deal the 2 sides could not agree. I think that may be less of an issue this season

Well, the length of the deal was only really an issue because neither side was in a position where it had to give ground. This year, I don't think Dallas wants to tag him again, so either it will give him a shorter deal or sweeten to pot in order for him to go longer.

Neither right now is the kind of player we need to have starting at 3-tech. Maybe they develop into it in the offseason, but that's not really a chance that Dallas needs to take.

I’m just giving you my opinion and what’s been reported on some of the Cowboys podcasts. When’s the last time the Cowboys signed a high priced top-tier free agent? With the loss of revenue this past year which will likely result in a lower salary cap they’re going to have to bank mostly on the draft.

I didn't say I was expecting them to sign a high-priced top-tier free agent, just that I believe they should if they want this defense to improve. If they continue to ignore the middle and back end or put cheap has-beens or never-weres back there, then we're going to keep getting the same results.

Quinn has already shown that like pretty much all DCs, he's only as good as the talent he gets.

Signing high priced top tier free agents doesn’t guarantee anything. Most of them don’t produce because they got paid. Robert Quinn cashed in after his big 11.5 sack season last year and didn’t do much in Chicago this season. All the great defenses were built through the draft. Brandon Carr was the last top-tier free agent I can remember the Cowboys signing to a huge contract and he never lived up to it. Our defense continued to be a liability. If the Cowboys had a do over they might have considered paying Byron Jones. Losing him really affected our secondary.

We can all debate Quinn’s stats & records & our opinions & judgments of him on & on & on.....
The thing Quinn brings to this locker room is a BIG SHINY SUPER BOWL RING & that’s one thing ALL players respect....something that gets EVERYONES attention.( And I think it carries A LOT more weight for Coordinators than it does for Head Coaches—Coordinators are actually “coaching “) Everybody knows you don’t win this RING by getting lucky. And you don’t go to 2 Super Bowls in back to back years by getting lucky. QUINN will not have to work hard to gain the players respect...THE SECOND QUINN WALKS IN THE DOOR HE WILL HAVE THE PLAYERS RESPECT......ITS THE PLAYERS WHO WILL HAVE TO WORK HARD TO GAIN HIS RESPECT.......Talk About Flipping The Script
Regardless of all the numbers & stats we crunch Quinn has done the ONE thing EVERYONE DREAMS OF......He’s Made It To The Promise Land.....TWICE!!!!.....AND HE HAS THE MAGIC RING TO PROVE IT..........a coaches stats don’t mean jack to players....IF he has a BIG AS! Ring & he’s been to TWO Super Bowls....That means he’s Legit & that leads to instant respect & that leads to trust & that leads to enthusiasm & that leads to 110% effort and it just keeps building. I think it’s a smart hire but Quinn will definitely need some better talent at several positions. I’m optimistic.

One thing's for sure . . . Quinn's destiny relies largely upon what he's able to do with what he's been assigned to change. It's a difficult task, that's far from being a walk in the park. We'll be obliged to be more patient than what we are now, if he's going to survive the great number of challenges he's faced with. Overcoming the limitations of a weak Dallas FO won't be easy. Here's hoping Jerry, Stephen and McCarthy do everything humanly possible to make his transition smooth and timely. I expect the players to take to DQ, much like those who have worked with him in the past.

In Quinn’s first year as DC w/the Seahawks, the team was ranked first in total defense & went on to win SB 48. Great hire!

I'm open to see what he can do. It shouldn't be too hard to outperform Nolan! Like you said, he has been associated with a strong defense before, so I'm willing to wait and see how it works out. Let's go Quinn!

Some are saying it’s a “C” move. Others are saying it’s the wrong move. Still others are saying an “elite“ defense is 2-3 years off. IMHO, Jerry goal is simply a BETTER defense in 2021 than in 2020. Jerry might think his time is running out, and a better defense to go with a better offense will at least make us competitive. When you’re 31st, and you change the DC AND add several defensive players, there’s nowhere to go but up.

We’ll find out next season if we like the hiring of Quinn. It won’t take long for fans to be calling for his head if things don’t go well.

Yep, time will tell, the guy has had success as a D coordinator, not so much as a head coach.

See it won't really matter who we hire if we don't invest heavily into the defense. Coule he improve the defense? sure but to what extent. We have starters who could argurably be 2nd or 3rd string players if not out of the league if it wasnt for Dallas
