Great story. Thanks for posting. That's true about chasing a scrambling quarterback, you get so frustrated that when you get close you take your shot, even if it's an illegal one. The dodger frustrated a lot of people:)

Being born in 84’ it sucks that I only could see Mr Staubach on old footage
Even then, while you could get a sense of his talent, highlights don't really capture his true greatness, which was leadership and the ability to rise to the ocassion. At the time, as fans we felt that with Roger at QB almost no deficit was too big to overcome - that somehow Roger would find a way. Years later I found that when you watch interviews with Roger's teammates they commonly talk about the same thing - that even if things looked bleak they believed Roger would always find a way to lead them to victory.

I recalled the "MWC" episodes about Al reminiscing about his HS football days...but had no idea O'Neill played college ball or was an NFL UDFA.

so very true. Joe Montana was the same way; his team mates believed. Very few QBs ever get that kind of faith from their team mates.

And Roger worked most of his magic in the bad old days of Jack Tatum and company where they could mug the WR and had free shots at the QB. And D linemen could head slap the bejesus out of the O linemen.

Really, really true Sean. Younger fans have no earthly idea just how good Roger Staubach actually was. Very unfortunate because while you can watch clips, it doesn't really give you the full picture. Just how in command he was of games, how much his team mates believed in him.

Jack Tatum was the only NFL player who scared me as a child.
And I HATED Roger Staubach he was so good at scrambling. As a Commanders fan, I wanted to grow up to play just so I could knock him out of the game. And then the Cowboys drafted Tony Dorsett, and I instantly became a Cowboys fan. And the rest, they say, is history.

LOL...great story. Never knew Ed actually played football. Al Bundy was almost as big as Roger was back in the day, So I guess lesson learned- if you can't make it big one way. There's always another.
