As an aside, whenever I hear someone say “I don’t live with regrets...or...I regret nothing” I just wanna smack the fire out of them. All that is saying is you haven’t learned lessons or are too prideful to admit mistakes.

That's an interesting thought Cal and for the most part i agree with you.

With even a little bit of self awareness all of us should understand how we could have altered our lives for the better with even a small amount of foresight when we were younger.

However if i had made any of the numerous changes to my life that i should have (and God knows there were many) then i would not be married to the woman i'm with and my current life would be altered completely. I would absolutely hate that.

So in essence, i don't really live with regrets, i just have moments in time that i remember living as a foolish young man who was extremely fortunate to find a happy place.

I have to be honest, I don’t have the foggiest idea of what that (French Foriegn Legion) is?

Is that like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

Its one of the toughest elite army regiments in any army worldwide. Part of French army, but recruits can be from any country in the world - this is why the French call it the foreign legion. Training is very tough and includes extreme desert and jungle training.

That's pretty close to where I'm at.

Over the years, I had some regrets, but mostly I have ended up in a great place w/ a great wifey, so my regrets have gone by the wayside.

Is possible to learn from mistakes but wish you never had to learn those lessons in the first place.

Some regrets lead to emotional growth and change. Others don’t provide that opportunity. Ex. You could have a friend you may have done wrong that you parted ways with. You may say, “welp, I’ll never do that again” and move on personally lesson learned, but the other side of that is that you hurt someone to figure that out.

For me it was jumping out of a plane. Always wanted to but, the old ticker won't allow me to at this point.

Yes that's legit, i/we have all had learning experiences from regrets certainly, i drilled down a little too far concerning your original post.

We can have regrets, learn from them and apply them going forward, it does not have to be black and white that having regrets means that one wants to change what occurred in the past.

Good point.

Not setting up an IRA when I had the chance, decades ago. I was only 29 when it was offered, when I found out you couldn't get the money until age 59 1/2 (without penalty) my reaction was "No way the gov't is keeping their hands off all that money (mine and all other IRA holders) for 30 years, no thanks.

Have two now, but starting them later in life it's much harder to accumulate a lot of money.

My bad...

I decided to give up regrets until the last breath I take because I found that was ruling my life. After several losses, all I had was regrets and that stalled my recovery for years. I spent two years driving an hour and half to Dallas every weekend to be in a house that pushed me deeper into a hole as my penance for my regrets all the while paying for the right to punish myself. I regret that.

Regrets represent choices made when we faced forks in the road we were on and too often we look back at that as a regret and don't consider where that choice took us and the end result.

I made some really questionable decisions but had I not, I would not have married the love of my life or met my best friend.

It's like playing the "It's a Wonderful Life" game with yourself. Have you ever really thought about all of the people in your life and the effect you've had on them and their lives? How many times did you seem to just be there at the right time and place? What might have happened if not for you?

I regret not doing __________. But what would have happened if you had and what wouldn't have happened? Life is dominoes.

Sitting here in close-contact quarantine I have had a lot of time for self-reflection and have seriously pondered this question. It didn't take long to come up with my biggest regret.

My Mother-in-Law passed away in May just short of her 94th year. She resided in a LT care facility for about one year up until the time of her death and I believe she was a victim of covid-related isolation. We visited her regularly before the pandemic, but our attempts at Zoom meets during the pandemic were not very productive as far as connecting emotionally.

Prior to LT care, she lived with us for 20 years in an apartment we have on the lower level of our home. That ended after a bad fall and the determination it was unsafe for her to be with us when alone. She had the first alert pendent and it certainly received a lot of action with false alarms. The time she needed it most, however, she did not have it within reach.

My biggest regret is not about me, it's about my Mother-in-Law. My Wife spent a lot time with her Mom in a care-nurse capacity while we were all under the same roof. I should have been more conscious of "Ma's" other needs and and taken the lead with sharing more of our personal time with her. She was a fine woman and I wish her peace.

As Rod Stewart said in his song : I wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger
In my case I let the wind push my boat around thinking time will always be there for me to paddle my way to the shore..I was wrong
Some regrets are of my doing some not and at this stage it is pointless to live in the past nothing will change I just move on and do my best to correct what I did or did not.
