A cap ceiling of $195M will put us at $47.5M under the cap. Tyron Smith release adds $5.6M. Chris Jones another $2M. Lawrence and Martin can be restructured to create more space as needed. That should give us around $60-65M in potential cap space. I’m assuming we don’t resign guys like A. Smith, Awuzie, J. Lewis.

Dak Prescott - 2021 cap hit around $37M

John Johnson III (FS) - 5/$75M, $15M 2021 cap hit.

That should allow enough money for a backup QB, a swing OT, and Gerald McCoy. Making Jaylon a 6/1 cut frees up $7.2M to sign our draft picks in the summer.

Draft

10. Zaven Collins or Micah Parsons. Would preferably take Collins in a trade back, but I’m not going to try to predict any trades.

44. Jay Tufele, DT, USC. Big and athletic DT who can be productive playing either 1 or 2 gaps.

75. Josh Jobe, CB, Alabama.
Good length and good fit for zone coverage.

This improves the middle of the defense which is key for what Dan Quinn likes to run. It moves LVE back outside where he was more productive. We’d be spending big for a FS, but it’s a very important position and one we probably won’t find any immediate help in the draft. DT group is overall better with McCoy, Gallimore, Hill, Tufele, and A Woods.

What’s oops is that you think it’s worth retaining Tyron rather than using his savings to improve our defense.
Gotta have a plan to replace him.

You're investing $37M in your QB and protecting his blindside with who? Brandon Knight? Re-signing Irving? Think he's re-signing for $1.25M if he knows he's going to be your starting Left Tackle? That's not going to get it done.

You save 5.6 million at one of the key positions on a team and plan is to start Cam Erving... No thanks!

Even if Tyron stays, Erving will likely start about 6 games. That’s not an exaggeration. Tyron is not going to play a full season anymore due to nagging injuries.

Fair point on Cam’s salary, although he made $2.5M last year. You could increase it and still make those moves. Alternatively, you can keep Tyron and create the cap room by restructuring other contracts.

Cutting Smith saves $5.2 million against the cap. You'll have to spend that a chunk of that to get a LT to replace him. So you won't have that much left to spend on defense.

Now you could make him a June 1 cut, which would save $10.5 million but you'll have a dead money hit next year too.

I like most of it. I prefer Collins in a trade back a few spots, also.

I think Tyron will be here unless he retires. At this point he is not that expensive for a good LT starter for 75% of the season.

But if you make him a 6/1 cut you won’t have those dollars to spend until after 6/1, correct?

Also, between Cam, Knight, and an OT in the draft I think we’ll probably be ok. This year showed that we can still run our offense without Tyron.

Yes so there really isn’t much of a benefit to cutting Smith this year.

Appreciate your work, but have to respectful disagree. This is real bad. You are releasing Tyron to pay for John Johnson? He isn't even a top 3 FS on the open market. Tufele is more of a raw 3T, who maybe able to play a little at the 1. Jobe is a late day 3 corner. Quite honestly, the team is worse.

Johnson is a very good FS and will get a big contract. We need a FS badly and guys like Justin Simmons and Anthony Harris will either be franchised or signed by their teams, who have the cap space for it. Johnson is more realistic to switch teams. You’re saying releasing Tyron (who can barely make it through 10 or so games) to upgrade one of the most important positions on our defense makes the team worse?

Also, no starting Alabama CB is a late day 3 prospect. That’s ridiculous. Jobe is predicted to go in the 3rd round. Tufele being a 3T? Fine. We need one of those, unless you’re ok with anointing Trysten Hill as your starter.

This may not be your cup of tea, but it in no way makes the team worse off, and I’d be willing to wager my evaluation is better than yours.

Everyone wants to cut a 30-year-old stud LT making 10M. smh

who can never stay on the field.

Also hasnt been stud for years now. If he plays hes just okay to good these days. His elite level of play is gone since all the injuries took their toll
