Deion Sanders, LaRoi Glover, Demarcus Ware, Charles Haley, Tyron Smith, Zach Martin....
Troy Aikman, but yes you do have a point...tons of our big contract players have not been worth it

Let’s pose the question differently, when has letting a player walk or failing to sign a free agent led to our success?

I think Romo and Ware both lived up to their deals. La'roi Glover worked out well for us. Tyron Smith, Zack Martin.
For sure Martin and probably Smith too.
Romo's 1st real contract in 2007? Yes
But due to injuries in his 2nd one, we only got 2 good/great years out of him (2013, 2014) but paid for 4.

Romo made too much money and we couldn’t overcome his contract.

By the time we might have a potential title team He got hurt and Dak unseated him.
But that's not Romo's fault. I think his play clearly shows he lived up to his contract.

Seriously question...

For the Dallas Cowboys when has giving a huge new contract ever worked out for us?

Beyond Deion Sanders 25 years ago I can’t really think of many...
I think the better question should be when has paying an average QB franchise QB money ever worked out?
I personally cannot think of any situation it works.
Goff, Wentz,Cousins, Jimmy G, Bradford, Flacco might be the closest to success although they had to pay him as he bet on himself and the Ravens could not treat him like they treated Dilfer 12 years earlier.
Signing free agents is a good thing as a matter of fact its really a great thing. The unfortunate stigma on FA I have noted on this site has been that... Why are these guys free agents? That is a very basic way of looking at things.
The question should be multi faceted, can this player help my team? Is he going to get better, is there a distressed asset scenario?
We all know Rodgers, Wilson don't hit Free agency or even available to trade unless it's a once in a generation situation.
Montana in 93 but he was much older, Manning in 2012 coming back from multiple neck injuries and the Colts getting Luck.
I mean Luck not panning out still tot his day shocks me.
I don't care about the amount of money Dak wants its the impact on the salary cap, just think when Dak was making 500K a year this team was not smart enough to add talent around him in FA, now when will be making 37 a year and don't fool yourself he will have a very high cap number. Remember Wentz & Goff signed extensions early and their new deals are just now kicking in. Why do you think it will require Philly to have a 50 million cap hit to move on from Wentz.. which is some small reason they chose to fire their HC. We will be stuck with Dak for the next 5 -6 years minimum.
He is not Wilson, Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes type.

He’s a top 3 DE in the NFL and it’s actually not disputed either.
Wow. Really? Please tell me that you are trolling.

If not.....please explain why he hasn't been to pro bowls in the last 2 years or made the all pro team in the last 3 years?

He doesn't have the sacks to be All Pro....that doesn't devalue what he is on that field though.

What are you talking about? Romo and Dak are functionally equivalent. Romo had plenty of chances with really really good teams.
2006, 2007, 2009, 2014. He had 4 legitimate years where he could have won a 2nd round playoff game. He had so many disappointing games and seasons... To me he is forever linked to Garrett. Two apples of Jerry's eye. This Stockholm syndrome that obsesses Cowboys fans. I don't want my football heroes to be mediocre.

When has a player ever been top 3 at his position and not been recognized by his peers as a top player for years on end?

I mean that whole "top 5" conversation is subjective. Everyone would have a different top 3 if you asked them. If you base it on "PFF" grades he graded out as a top 3 defensive end....it just depends on how or what you use. Some would use "Pro Bowl" like you did even though Chase Young and Graham did not have better years than him but they made it.

It would be interesting to see a ROI done on players in the NFL. To be fair, all the years of their contracts should be factored in so the 1st contract, the one that leads to their 2nd one, serves a s a balance over the life of the contract.

As a GM, you would have to assume some underperforming and overperforming to balance the ledger while also considering you might have to pay more than you want for certain players/positions because of the market value and lack of options. Might have a LG up and he's a C+/B- on the field but there is a shortage of OG in FA which will drive his value up to a B+ and you need him on your OL as a unit. So, another player needs to overperform in order to reach your goal.

It's a team sport so I don't care about individual players. What teams have the best ROI on their annual cap expenditure? I would wager the Cowboys are very close to the bottom since the cap came into being.

The Joneses look at it as individuals creating a team while a guy like Belichick looks at is as a team comprised of individuals. The former inhibits team building while the latter enhances it. He has a plan, he knows what he can/will pay for each position and if he has to go over as he did with Gilmore, Moss and Cooks, he has to balance that at another position. If he sees a break the formula coming like Jones or Collins, he trades them when they have value or just lets them walk as he did Flowers.

It is not about what any GM has paid any player because they will all overpay. It is about what the team has accomplished from the investment.

If the Cowboys have a 38M QB, 21M WR and 15M RB, they're going to have to balance that with some overperforming affordable players at several other positions. The object of the cap game is to keep from giving too much to too many which creates imbalance.

I guess you and I have differing opinions on what living up to a contract means. In my view, Romo's play certainly lived up to the contract he received. There are so many things that can go wrong in a one and done play off game. In 2007 if Patrick Crayton catches that ball we likely win. In 2014, you had the Dez no catch and the Murray fumble. If both those go our way good chance we win that game too. Can't put those losses on Romo. 2009, we got wrecked by Minnesota. Romo was sacked 6x, fumbled twice and threw a pick. If your QB is getting sacked 6x, you OL isn't doing their job. But he did have 3 turnovers, so he shares some blame.

Revisionist history.

We gave Troy a big contract, he got hurt, and it put us into cap hell for a few years. How soon we forget....

I agree with the Deion contract.

But I can't recall ever giving Michael and Emmitt record breaking contracts. Besides......most of those contracts (except for Aikman's) were not truly in the CAP era which completely changes the landscape.
