He'd be stupid
Learn your trade from the bottom. He'll fail dramatically if not.
Yeah, he needs to start out as the TE coach and go from there. That's like what Deion Sanders is doing. He's a name for that college and it will draw some kids but does he have the coaching chops to keep them together and form a winning team? Nothing has been proven yet.

No way is he qualified to lead a college program.

Define "qualified".

If it's understanding of the game, he is qualified. If it's the ability to have respect from his players, a long career as an NFL tight end alone would get him that, so he's qualified. If it's personality, he's a past NFL Man of the Year, so he's qualified.

If it's coaching experience, he's obviously not, though perhaps in his last few years he was doing some "coaching on the field" or "on the sideline", but doubt that's enough.

If the Tennessee program is in shambles, though, and the university heads are willing, letting him learn on the job is an option, in which case the lack of coaching experience isn't a big deal.

Could work, but I'd not do it...

Dan Patrick threw it out there that Witten could be in the running for the Tennessee job. That place has turned into a total dumpster fire

They let a country singer talk them out of Greg Schiano. That worked out well for them.

All he has to do is manage it, he can hire coordinators and a former head coach to his staff and he'll be fine. Deion Sanders is HC at a university in Florida.

this is the 2nd time his name has come up for that job.
his name surfaced the last go around.
unless i'm mistaken...i think it's some boosters that are the source for that.
but not enough of them to make it happen.

In the FCS...

But I'd say that Deion is probably more qualified than Witten based on the simple notion that he'll be a better recruiter. I don't think Witten has any appeal to an 18 year old from Miami or wherever.

Depends upon what kind of a coach this involves. As a head coach, he's inexperienced. As a TEs coach, he'd surely be valuable.
When someone suggests a name is in the running at Tennessee for the coaching job..they aren't talking about the tight end coaching job
