It strikes me as odd many fans here have watched this defense struggle and get gutted by runs up the middle and still feel a talented 1T isn't needed. It amazes me, in fact. True, this is not the only missing piece, but it's an important piece, none the less.

Yeah, it's not like all we need is a NT, but we definitely need one.

It would help but as others have said you have to have a stout front seven , not just a top five nt.
I remember that infamous gif during the Bengals game where jaylon spins backwards out of the running lane into the wrong gap. That play was the epitome of everything wrong
With the cowboys defense. During that play , you could see antwuan woods give a lazy effort and the bengals center easily pushes him aside

Let's suppose you kept EVERY player we currently have on the defense BUT added a sure fire top five 1 Tech/NT to the current defense. What do you think the impact of it would be on the defense, with the new coaching hire?

I think we'd see some because the middle would be stronger against the run, so the run defense would improve. However, unless we're talking about a player who can also push the pocket, it would not have much effect on pass defense.

If you are talking about an impact player who can collapse the pocket, then it would have quite a bit of effect. The pocket collapses and it makes the ends more effective because the QB can't just step up to avoid the rush. It makes the DBs more effective because the QB can't step into his throws or spend as much time waiting for the receivers to come open. If makes the linebackers more effective because teams can't single him or shed the double-team block quickly to get to the second level.

A game-changing DT is the No. 1 need on defense and a lot of the players who were getting dogged on here would look much better because of it. Now, where can I get one?

You have issues at all 3 levels to start with and you're potentially losing 3 guys that you have in an already weak secondary to FA.

A single 1T isn't flipping the script.

I believe the premise was that we keep everybody else on defense, so we wouldn't be losing any players, just adding one. I believe Verdict is trying to gauge how much impact a dominant NT would make with the defenders we have. And yes, the reality is that we won't have several of those defenders.

The team has to stop falling head over heals in love with quick, first step gap penetrators. It has caused unforced errors in reaching for Trysten Hill and drafting almost the exact same player in Neville Gallimore. You need unselfish, come to work every down, gap fillers. Stop trying to be clever and think you're going to find the next Aaron Donald and instead draft some Domata Peku's and Sam Adams'.

It'll do wonders for the Linebackers and the overall run defense.

Very well said.

Our desire to draft flash keeps derailing our D.

A good 1t and a good MLB is what will move us forward. MLB is the worst position we sport in all of the NFL. We absolutely suck , between Smith & and the glass men. I do think Poe might have been the worst DT when he was on the filed in the NFL this year. We didn't stand a chance.

I think it would def help. We’ve had run stopping issues for quite some time and no one collapsing the middle of the pocket. But 100% agree we need a quality starter or better on on three levels...preferably 1t, MLB, and FS

Lewis, Chido and Woods?

Out of those 3 I am keeping Chido.

Woods should have been cut after this "effort" comment, and Lewis should have been benched after his stupid penalty in NY, the laughing after the fact ended any chance of me ever liking him. Guy is a loser and so is Woods. This draft is super important and we have a top ten pick in every round and multiple comps. We can retool and inject a lot of talent on that side of the ball if we play our cards right.

IMO, a top 5 1T would improve the defense quite a bit. I think it maybe the single biggest thing we could do to improve this defense. Adding a guy in the middle who can be a force against the run, would go a long way to helping our LB's stay clean and get to the ball. He would also help our pass rush. Either by shoving the C back into the QB's face, or by by demanding a dbl team to keep him from doing that, which helps free up the 3T and the DE's on their rush. And that would help the secondary make more plays.

I do think the coaching will be better, at least I certainly hope it is. But regardless, it should be more in line with the personal we have and what they know, which should translate into better play all around.

Getting "gutted" up the middle has never been the problem. It is always cutbacks and misdirections.
