Cowboys should non exclusive tag Dak

You realize that has a great chance of biting us in the arse. There are other QB needy teams that would love to pay Dak

I do realize that. I just tend to think every option has the chance of biting them in the behind.

If you want to keep him then all you would be doing is driving up his price because you would have teams bidding on him.

I guess it depends on how bad the Jones want to keep him. If you want to keep him you also need that extension done by the deadline. So he isn’t a FA next off season.

Dak’s got a lot of leverage at this point. IMO

I will add. My preference is for Dak to sign a new deal. Prior to even needing the tag.

I think one of the things the cowboys should do. If they don’t extend Prescott before the tag deadline, is make sure they use the non exclusive tag on Dak

Last year I think using the exclusive tag on Dak was a tactical mistake.

let other teams negotiate with him. Let him see his value on the open market.

You’re still protected by being able to match any deal he signs with another team, or by receiving 2 first rounders.

I think tactically it makes the most sense to use the non exclusive tag. Worst case scenario you get more information on his value relative to other teams. Which helps them in the negotiation process.
The Jones boys want Dak to be their exclusive property. Nothing has changed about that. The exclusive tag will be used on him once again in 2021. I just hope he agrees to a long-term deal before the season starts.

The question is how will that be received? I think that's what stopped them from doing that last year.

This is like telling your wife if she can find another man, go ahead. Think she won't be motivated to find one?

I think, from a QB's point of view, there is a world of difference in the exclusivity of the tag. One says "we love you" and the other says "we like you". QB's want to be loved.

The Transition tag says "we're checking your teeth". That's what I would have done. But you're 100% right. The thing is, where did it get Jerry? Can't always worry about their feelings.

I'm not sure that is the worst scenario, but it certainly isn't the most desirable one.

One benefit of using the non-exclusive tag is that even if the team has to pay Dak to stay it is a lesser amount than under the exclusive tag. I guess that could help the Cowboy's bargaining position somewhat, but it could also inject some animosity into the negotiation.

This isn't true. A second year tag is a 20% increase from his salary last year, whether it is a exclusive or non-exclusive tag.

Why wouldn't the Jones boys want to resign Dak? Isn't the number one offense in the league and going on pace to break NFL records enough or are we going to pretend there is some rookie we can draft that is going to put up 55 points a game?

Has been doing what
Playing with the QB. The front office has been playing hardball for a while. Ideally Dak gets extended after year 3. Rather than wait and watch the price continue to rise.

They are going to put a tag on Dak. If they can’t resign him long term by the deadline. That is a 100% guarantee.

they aren’t just going to let him hit free agency with no protection, nor should they.

Why? Why waste this money when there is no need? People under estimate the impact that a serious injury can have on a QBs worth.

Teddy Bridgewater, who is a more talented QB than Dak, signed for 500k plus incentives when returning from injury.

Even setting aside the debate over Daks skills, by the time Dak can pass a physical, every team in the league would have decided their starting QBs to open training camp. Teams simply cannot take a chance on him failing a physical or even not being 100% - and that includes the Cowboys. If we're offerring Dak a contract, we're bidding against ourselves.

lol why? Nobody just lets a top 10 QB just walk and hit free agency unprotected. That’s why

And stop with the teddy bridgewater silliness.

and now all of a sudden you’re Dak’s doctor and know everything about his injury and recovery timetable? Get real dude.

come with a reality based argument or just don’t argue at all. They are going to tag Dak. If they can’t sign him before the deadline.

They are going to. 100% guaranteed.

Maybe you don’t like that. But it doesn’t matter what you would like. It’s what is going to happen.

Ok expert - when do you think Dak will pass a physical? The facts are he would not pass one today.

You need to think like a Front Office, not a fan. Sentiment and emotion dont matter. If you think Dak will fully recover and go on to become a HOF QB, then you should be thinking......".......the injury is a blessing in dusguise.....we will get Dak extremely cheap now..." as opposed to ....."......lets pay him all our money..."

Maybe the same will happen with Dak where ever he ends up. He wasnt exactly elite before his injury.

You need to think like a front office.

he is getting signed or tagged. He isn’t just hitting free agency without a tag.

you need to be realistic.

I think Dak is the guy and deserves to be. But I've never agreed with a blank check. This approach is exactly what I'd do.

It's a 4-6 month injury and we are already at 3 months. From what we've heard everything has been great so far. At the latest he would be ready around draft time. You aren't getting Dak extremely cheap. Articles are already saying he will be the #1 free agent but you don't think he'll get any offers?
