Yeah just because a guy has passing stats does not make him great. Just as those of us who are too young to have seen Sammy Baugh, YA Tittle and that bunch guys born after 1970 probably have little recollection of Staubach, Bradshaw, Unitas and that bunch. And guys born after 1990 don't even remember Aikman and Young.. The passing numbers are always going to get better because the league mandates it.

Sprinkle in free agency and the salary cap and teams are not keeping defenses together for 10-12 years anymore so there's always a chump or two on the field that the good QBs can target. I'm not big on these lists because of how different the game can get from era to era. Yes the truly great ones could play in any era. But the question is would they be great in any era? One thing I can say with 100% certainty is that Brady and Brees would not have been able to keep playing into their 40's had they been around in the 1970's. QBs took waaaaay more punishment back in those days. Both would have been battered and broken by 35 back then.. hands down.

Plus a lot of that punishment also includes hideous playing fields- en route to good riddance to astro-turf (basically carpeted concrete) that probably contributed more to concussions
physical hits themselves, and add to lesser protective playing gear and equipment than the yonder years,..plus advanced sports medicine and advance physical training.

Back in the day, an torn ACL meant the automatic stamped end of a playing career, ..nowadays we're experiencing players having a better chance of a better chance of physically
making it back from such an injury. o_O

Staubach top 10? LOL Cmon give me a break.

Aikman over Favre? Cmon!!!!

Aikman was a very good QB and leader that had the success he did because of the incredible talent that surrounded him and Jimmy Johnson. The moment the Cowboys werent the most talented team in the NFL Aikman struggled big time.

He was a very accurate, short to medium passing range bus driver type that had great leadership.

- Even in our prime, before the surrounding talent evaporated from that 90s team,.
... do you still remember Cowboys players/coaches getting frustrated & discouraged after a surprising 0-2 start saying ?... " We need Emmitt .." (who was a holdout)

- Or a disgruntled Deion Sanders after a playoff upset loss to Cardinals up " we need players whose getting paid big money to step up and deliver as expected.. "

- More so ? it took Emmitt with a busted shoulder gutting and grinding it out in an NFC East title deciding game vs NY Giants, than the highest paid QB in the NFL ?

At the prime of his career, i'll give Aikman more credit than just a bus driver as we did push the ball vertically in the rhythm time based offense and were much more
than a dink- dunk passing offense.
But I never thought Aikman just was a great take over,.. team on his back lead QB, .. in the same sense as guys like Brady, Brees, Marino, Elway, Rodgers, Favre etc ..IMO...

Good QB ..to perhaps Very Good, ..but not quite a Great one, imo.

Of course naturally opinions are gonna vary and much of us are gonna see matters differently, and its interesting to hear voices and opinions heard. :D

I firmly believe Troy Aikman's entire career was "taking one for the team." His body took a beating early in his career because the team was so bad. In the middle of his career he sacrificed gaudy numbers in favor of playing consistent winning football. Then on the back end of his career when the team was no longer great the bill came due on the beating he had been subjected to early in his career and his body started to let him down. I think from '92 to '98 Troy was as good as any QB in the league.. But between injuries and Zampese's extremely predictable offense once the team stopped being great and could no longer just line up and beat people Troy got the short end of the stick. I think he could have put up numbers had he been asked to.. and in games that turned into shootouts he more than held his own.. that 1994 NFC Championship being the most glaring example. The amount yards and points he hung on that great 49er defense was a thing to behold. But thankfully he was seldom asked to do that sort of thing because the Cowboys were almost never blown out..

Where do the Cowboys QBs rank among the Best All time QBs in NFL History:
( * still active)

1) Tom Brady *

2) Joe Montana

3) Peyton Manning

4) Aaron Rodgers*

5) Drew Brees *

6) Dan Marino

7) John Elway

8) Brett Favre

9) Dan Fouts

10) Pat Mahomes *

11 Steve Young

12 Kurt Warner

13) Roger Staubach

14) Terry Bradshaw

15) Ben Rothlisberger

16) Russell Wilson *

17) Jim Kelly

18) Randall Cunningham

19) Troy Aikman

20) Warren Moon

Honorable mention: Tony Romo, Joe Namath, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning

I listed mine here in according to the ones I've seen play or had research to some extend. Its so really hard to count those I've never seen play or not enough research tools available; ala YA Tittle, Jonny Unitas, Sammy Baugh, Fran Tarketon, Otto Graham, Sid Luckman Bart Starr etc. etc.
Who retired as the NFL all time passing leader during his tenure?

Roger Staubach. So until you give me a quarterback that literally and figuratively went to war for me, won 2 Super Bowls, with 4 Super Bowl appearances, and on a Dallas Cowboys forum, that QB list better start with Roger Staubach.

Tom Brady has the championships, the perfect regular season, but that Tampa Team was loaded on offense with Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich call shots. Todd Bowles is another reason I call him Jerry Dumbo GM Jones as Bowles has a fast, play making, 4-3 D with an active defensive front, young LBs, and hawks in the secondary. We hired the coach that coached Winnfield Jr. and did not draft Winnfield Jr. Now that coach is gone and Cowboys are watching the playoffs, divisional, conference championship, and Super Bowls at home.

Jerry Dumbo GM Jones.

It's hard to prop up Favre over Aikman since Favre is the NFL all time leader in picks. The single worst stat a QB could have Favre has and you keep propping him up over Aikman.

Very good list.

I doubt Brady should even be mentioned in any kind of list. NE cheated its way to at least 3 championshis and he did too also. He and this team is well overrated.

Everybiody else is very good placed.

Yes, he was gun slinger. If I have a the perfect team around the QB, then Aikman is my guy.

If I need to pick a QB to go to battle with, give me Favre over Aikman. Aikman pretty much averaged 220 yards and 1.4 TD's per game.
