Dallas has a ton of leverage if they do choose to use it. Just make Dak an URFA. Dak likely won’t be able to pass a physical until June (my guess), definitely not before the draft. No team is offering Dak big money before the draft since Dak can’t pass a physical. After FA and the draft, teams won’t have the money to pay Dak what he wants and teams will already have shored up their QB position. Jerry could always match any offer Dak would get if some team would take the risk.
Good luck trying to get $35-40M per year with $110M guaranteed on a 5 year contract, let alone a 4 year contract, with the cap at $180M. Throw in questionable talent and can’t pass a physical.
My only concern is that Jerry is too kind and loyal at the expense of the team and the fans and will sign Dak to the highest contract ever with no competition.
No, no, no. lol.
Dallas has near zero leverage and making Dak an UDFA makes it literally zero.
Dak doesn't miss a single paycheck until week 1.
He doesn't need to sign right now or even March 15th.
Dallas is the one with the pressure cooker of the salary cap.
On a free market Dak would get paid a TON. TON of money.
As a free agent he doesn't have to pass a physical just submit all his medical records for perusal CURRENTLY. --this was a COVID adjustment.
Given what the Rams just paid in trade costs to take a flier on Stafford the amount of money some team would throw at Dak in a money only deal? Sheesh. Off the charts.
What Dak might have to take is a deal focused more on roster bonuses as opposed to day 1 GTD in this case.
But the numbers would still be insane.
It'd take 50M year 1 to get a meeting IMHO. --with 40M AAV over 4 years to 45AAV over 5.
And for that Dallas would get a R3 comp provided they don't sign more free agents of value than they lose.
Which basically means they'd have to slow pay free agency like last year and/or take the lower end of QB market. Jameis Winston, Cam Newton, Andy Dalton.
The Colts have over 60M in cap space and need a QB but little else.
