I did a quick google search. I would say tackle for loss is production. Smith is not in the top 100. He is making tackles but how far down the field?
I checked his stats against other LBs a couple of weeks ago and he was worse than I thought in most categories. Tackles seems to be the only stat he looks good in. Wish I wouldn’t have done the research because I think much less of him now than I did before. Was never a big fan of his but was more neutral than most. Can’t wait until he is gone now.

  1. He bites harder on ball fakes than any Cowboy I’ve ever seen.
  2. Randomly chases the wrong ball carrier.
  3. Takes on blockers standing straight up and back pedaling.
  4. Takes way too long to identify the ball carrier and he sits 6yds off the LOS which equals a tackle 8yds past the LOS.
  5. CANNOT stack and shed. Period

His lateral movement appears as if his feet have been numbed with novocaine

Assuming you were quoting and replying to my post yes his lateral movement is not good. He can’t plant and change direction quickly. It’s almost like he has to stop first then begin the transition. He accelerates good in a straight line which is how he’s able to catch up to the plays.

Anyone who actually watches J Smith play on every down knows that the stats don't tell the story on his play. He is average at best but does provide good comic relief for me every Sunday.........

Definition of production....to produce....lol.

I downloaded advanced stats from Pro Football Reference. Jaylon's production sucks. Here is how he compares with other LBs:

Interceptions: Jaylon had 1. Jaylon was tied for 12th with 33 other LBs.
Completion %: Jaylon was targeted 59 times allowing 42 receptions 71.2% completion %. He ranked 31st (minimum 10 targets)
Yards Allowed: 438. Jaylon was 97th (minimum 10 targets)
Yards Per Target: 7.4. Ranked 76th (minimum 10 targets)
Touchdowns Allowed: 3 Tied for 90th with 8 other LBs (minimum 10 targets)
QB Rating: 102.2 Ranked 64th (minimum 10 targets)
Yards After Catch Allowed: 293 Tied for 102 with 1 other LB (minimum 10 targets)
Blitzed: 45 times - 43rd Most of any LB tied with 2 other LBs
QB Hurries: 1 Tied for 76th with 29 other LBs (minimum 10 blitz attempts)
QB Knock Downs: 2 Tied for 50th with 20 other LBs (minimum 10 blitz attempts)
Sacks: 1.5 Tied for 61st with 3 other LBs (minimum 10 blitz attempts)
QB Pressures: 5 Tied for 60th with 14 other LBs (minimum 10 blitz attempts)
Tackles: 154 2nd best
Missed Tackle %: 5.5% Tied for 19th best with 1 other LB (minimum 40 tackles)

Note: the minimums were put in place to help Jaylon's ratings and not hurt them. If I didn't use minimum his ratings would be lower. Here is a link to the raw numbers:

Well, it's hard not to like Smith. He's just gotta step it up and this new scheme should help him. He will be asked to run and chase, to drop and cover, to do the things that, athletically, should be his strong suit. I hope he has a great season.

Jaylon is the most productive player on OUR defense the last 3 seasons.......

Does he lead OUR team in forced turnovers?
Does he lead OUR team in sacks?
Does he lead OUR team in QB pressures?
Does he lead OUR team in passes defended?
Does he lead OUR team in tackles for loss?
Does he lead OUR team any meaningful stat other than tackles, which we know a ton are for good gains by the opposing offense?

Play your “is it true or not”game with Jaylon in a stat other than tackles and see how it turns out for you.

Fat garrett says hes into analytics now. Was that another lie from him? If not we definitely need a linebacker drafted to ease jaylon off of the field

Because Garrett was al talk and no action.

I don't think Quinn would text Jaylon, he'd say it to his face, and if Jaylon was as disrespectful with his response, Quinn would try to choke him out Homer Simpson style.

Quinn is not the greatest in-game technician, but he's much more of hands-on (pun intended) coach.

He's an absolute poser on the field. I find it quite easy not to like him.

I wouldn't be surprised, in the least, if Jerry and Stephen elect to keep Jalen Smith in tow. They've always been prone to stick with the talent that they've acquired, whether they're truly productive enough or not. They're extremely aware of not being viewed as incompetent football guys. Little do they suspect that's what causes their incompetence to be so obvious. "We like our guys." o_O

He also doesn't lead our team in TD passes lol. He is the most productive player on our defense at his position.....it's not close

So to you the most tackles = the most productive. Why don't you just say, he is the team's leading tackler?

You're the one in 2016 that kept repeating we had a Top 5 defense in 2016 because you couldn't look past a ranking that was influenced heavily by ball control and unforced errors by the opposing offenses to see that ranking was a mirage. You just kept repeating "is it true or not they are a top 5 defense". Then the playoffs roll around and our "top 5 defense" got smoked because, despite the rankings, they weren't good, as many posters kept trying to tell you throughout the year.

You're doing the same thing here. You have fixated on a stat and can't get beyond it.
