Saints FS Marcus Williams (24 years old). He will cost roughly what Marcus Maye (almost 27 years old) will but is a little over 2 years younger. The Saints are cash strapped, making it unlikely they keep Williams.
I loved FS Malik Hooker in 2017’s draft but his health is obviously a big concern, so I went for the more sure thing in Williams. If you could guarantee me that Hooker would stay healthy, I’d sign him any day. He’s still just 24 years old and has natural ball skills that can’t be taught.
Recently turned 26 years old, Tennessee DB Desmond King is a guy that I wanted Dallas to draft in 2017. He’s an Iowa guy, which means he’s a tough and smart guy. He can do a lot of things in your defensive backfield and shouldn’t break the bank (around $7M/year estimated). He’d provide a good vet presence and a tough, no-nonsense attitude in what is probably going to be a pretty young secondary in Dallas.
Other corner options for me would be about to be 26 year old Pittsburgh CB Cameron Sutton or 27 year old Cincy CB Mackenzie Alexander (both in the $7-8M/year range).
I don’t even know if Quinn and the Cowboys would even have the desire to make this move, but I think that 26 year old OLB/EDGE Haason Reddick would excel in Quinn’s LEO position. He has been pretty much used incorrectly since he was drafted. Arizona used him as an off the ball LB that rarely rushed the passer. This past year, they finally gave him the chance to get after the QB some and he delivered 12.5 sacks. As the LEO, he would be playing in a way that is a lot like what he did at Temple to become a first round pick to begin with. He is Vic Beasley (a Dan Quinn first round pick) with better toughness and instincts to get home on the rush. The guy is a natural born pass rusher. This signing would depend on the coaches having a clear plan to send him after the QB at LEO and the price not getting too high. IMO, he would be great playing that spot.
So, I’m not saying sign all of these guys. That would be too many, I know. What I’m saying is that these players are all guys that I’d like to see the team try to bring in.
If Dallas signed:
Marcus Williams FS
Desmond King DB
Haason Reddick LEO
They would have much more freedom in the draft to go with the flow of the picks and not worry about reaching for need. Obviously, FS would be hopefully fixed with Williams. King would help out at a number of spots in the secondary but some more CB’s would need to be brought back (Awuzie) or drafted. Reddick would fill a particular role and in sharing the LEO with Gregory, would most likely make that spot very productive.
I know, none of it probably happens. But it should.
