I understand people not being used to the cold, but how stupid do you have to be to sit in a garage in a running car?......How did one of the parents not know enough to stop when one of them passed out, at the very least??
It’s mind boggling, I was telling my wife the same thing. As an adult, even a teenager, how did at least one of them not know that it was a bad idea?

It’s sad.

I assume they didn't want it to get colder. Maybe they were trying to warm up the garage with the engine heat?
I think that may have been the case, the article was a little vague.

In other news, I just lost power for the 3rd time in the past 16 hours. Last time it got down to 52 degrees in my house.

Been there. It sucks. That's why I recently bought a generator. Now I have to have a transfer switch installed, so I can plug the generator into my house directly.

Stay safe down there fellow Cowboys fans. Northeasterners know exactly what you're going through. Maybe he/she are just youngsters Rock.
Could be but he/she made the statement that wind turbines were useless in this weather when in fact they’re providing more than their normal output at the moment. And in fact the problem is mostly with gas, oil and coal infrastructure not being able to handle the cold weather. Can’t let lies like that go unchallenged. Then he refused to own up to his lies and slid away back under his rock. Can’t handle those types. Those types are the cause of all the issues with the internet.

*,,,Er,,, you do&you don't*
as you certainly come across ( to me anyway) as the "Jonny wrench-it/fix-it" sort of BROUGHAM'S type: 1) remove electric company.'s metering device.
2) attache portable generators output feed to the "downstream" feed legs running into your domicile,,,but,,, I'ma just an old "trailer crash/mobile homer"
*a new set of quality heavy duty booster or jumper cables could prove remarkably useful*:star:

** After thought: yer' neutral/white wire is nothing more than an glorified ground wire therefore should elements of Indecision/ self doubt creep in? firstly & by all means affix it to an suitable grounding lug bar located within yer' meters breaker panel box**

I prefer to just plug in. Plus, it'll be a good selling point if I ever do move to a tropical island.

Besides, I'm not sure jumper cables could handle my well pump, boiler, refrigerator, lights, and microwave.

:hammer:Lol. Carry on....
Just read a story about 4 people in Houston (2 died of CO including a child) who were trying to stay warm with their car running in the garage. Stay safe and smart people.
So sad. Too cold for the family to realize the danger they put themselves in. Heart breaking! :(
how did at least one of them not know that it was a bad idea?
Ugh, so true. Probably the same way babies are forgotten in the back seat of a car, especially on hot days. Parent(s) simply forgot.

* I doubt your portable generator could handle all that, huh? I'm talking bare bones/ no frills 110/220 voltage output( ,,,er,,, refrigerator?,,,copy:thumbup:

If you want a whole house generator to take care of the basics like furnace fan, lights, microwave and refrigerator then you are looking at around a 7500 watt generator; because you want one that can handle all of them running at the same time.

Problem with both refrigerators and furnace fans is that the initial surge is a lot higher then the steady pull and THAT is what you have to have the capacity for.

Now a/c is even more of a juice hog especially at start up; you need at least 18 amps at 120 volts which is 2160 watts JUST for that; now once its running it will go down to around 12 amps (depending on its size) which is 1440 watts.
you have to calculate all of that for each item you want to run on the generator and always add 10% just in case.

Mine is 6500 peak watts on gasoline/ 5800 peak on propane.

you can get by with a smaller generator as long as you are careful about things.
By the way kudo's on getting a dual fuel; VERY SMART.
Propane does not deteriorate like gasoline does; one of the big draws to diesel generators.

* Thanks for clarification, that should provide well within nominal electrical draw parameters of an average dwelling, tho,I'm lacking personal knowledgement concerning submersible water well pumps / I'd never factored that into the stopgap/ emergency procedure of keeping the lights / modicum of normalcy rolling* ( I was just fixin' as to inquire unit wattage output):star:

As infrequently as I hope to need it, I don't want gasoline in the lines and carb between uses. I could run it out each time, but that still leaves a residue.

Lots of power plants were literally frozen and taken off line. They don't have the winterization protocols you guys have in the north because we rarely get weather this bad. These are record temperatures we are seeing, across the entire state. Even places like Houston and Corpus are well below freezing. So all of these ill-prepared plants were taken out by mother nature, reducing capacity.

So massive demand, decreased supply = Grid instability. The only way to keep it up is to have rolling blackouts.

Ok, now I understand. I'd still be pissed. It may be rare, but I do seem to remember Texas getting snow on occasion.
