It's by far the dumbest thing they could do
No, the dumbest thing they can do is to not get Dak signed. The writing is on the wall in the NFL: Key position players are beginning to see that they have more leverage than they thought. Dak (allegedly) wants $160MM for 4 years? Pay him. Dicking around hoping he'll take a 5 year deal after he's said he won't is straight up foolish.
Is Dak worth $40MM/year? Idk. If he delivers a SB appearance, of course he is. If he delivers 2 NFCC appearances, of course he is. 4 trips to the divisional round? Of course he is.
This talk about drafting a kid and thinking he'll be a better 'value' than Dak is nonsense. There's FAR less than a coin flip's chance that any team is going to see sustained playoff success with even a high draft choice.
Two years ago, there was a HUGE contingent in this forum that didn't think Dak could get $25MM/year. Two years from now, $40MM will probably be slightly above average.
