I'm fine with the comp pick. If I'm serious about winning this year I need Gallup. A 3rd and 4th is nothing to me. Especially when we have 2 of each this year if I'm not mistaken. You give me a 2nd rounder and I am willing to listen. Gallup means more to this team than a 3rd and 4th rounder.
I like Gallup and have no problems with him staying. That being said having three 3s and three 4s this year can help rebuild the defense.

Cooper and Lamb will be great and can grab another receiver to fill in the 3rd or 4th spot if Wilson stays.

The real question is are you keeping Cooper after next year. If so you have to let Gallup walk and it's possible you don't get a 3rd or 4th comp pick. If they let Cooper go after next season the money you save will allow Gallup to be resigned.

That's the thing they don't know if they are letting Cooper walk. At least I don't think they do. But a big way in swaying that is if Cooper gets hurt or has a bad year and Gallup has a great year.

I'm just not interested in weakening my offensive weapons in favor of my defense. I'm just not overly excited in a extra 3rd and 4th round pick.

Me either.
For those who want the Cowboys to go with a team that just outscores everybody else, that's certainly not an option. But moving down in the draft and getting an extra 2nd rounder, that's how I'd like to see the draft play out.

And using the draft value chart (yes I know not every team uses it, and maybe none do, but just as a guide), the Cowboys could give up the 75th pick and exchange the 10th for the 15th pick, it would allow them to get the 50th pick, giving them 15, 44 and 50 in the draft. While not giving them as good a chance to snag a "top" prospect, with so many needs moving up 25 spots for their third pick would help the team more than the 10 pick overall.

And that's not even considering that there might be another Lamb-type player drop...

He has more value in our minds, than in other NFL GM's minds. He's a good #2 no doubt, but there are just too many very good WR's coming out in the drafts nowadays. Far too many to give up a decent pick for him on a 1 yr deal.
He may get us a 4th, and for that I'd keep him for the year and hope he decides to stay for a lot less than he can get elsewhere, but not likely.

I'd do it for a high 2 and a later round like 5th. He's a decent, not a great WR so if you can get that for him it's a steal because he was basically made the 3rd WR last year and Lamb is only going to get better and get more and more of his looks.

This trade lets you draft Cooper's replacement and pick up another defensive player. It also nets you a couple million in cap space. You can roll the dice on a rookie third receiver when you already have Cooper, Lamb, Jarwin, Schultz, and Pollard.

Or, to stir the pot a little bit: Would you make this trade if you could get Pitts in the first? Why or why not?

I am biased but believe he is worth more. Plus if we let him walk after another 1100 yards or so I have to think he'd net a nice comp pick in the neighborhood of a 3rd anyways?

If that's the case you may as well get another year of production from him.

Bottom line is I doubt he gets re-signed so if you can get significant draft capital or an equal young player at a position of need you probably need to make the move.

I think they're saying we have to decide if he's part of our long-term plan. If not, we may wanna trade him before his contract expires after the 2021 season. Interestingly the same year we have to make a decision about Coop also.

I'm not sure about this trade.....must rather Dolphins 2nd rounder and they keep the 3rd and 4th.

WR MICHAEL GALLUPMIAMI DOLPHINS FOR A 2021 3RD (#81), 2021 4TH (#123)
Cowboys Cap Implications: $222,495 in dead money, $2.383 million in cap savings

Dolphins Cap Implications: One-year, $2.383 million, $0 in total guarantees

Gallup saw his role in the Dallas offense diminish with the emergence of 2020 first-round pick CeeDee Lamb, even ignoring the obvious quarterback troubles in Dallas last season. Gallup was highly productive while operating as the No. 2 target opposite Amari Cooper in 2018-19, but he became more of a deep threat option with less volume as Lamb’s role continued to grow each week.

Gallup saw 105 targets in 2020 out of the Cowboys' 662 total pass attempts — good for a 15.8% target share — after garnering 116 targets on 633 total pass attempts in 2019 for an 18.3% target share. Lamb out-targeted Gallup in his rookie season — one in which the Cowboys had a brand new coaching staff and a truncated offseason — and that trend should only continue going forward.

The Cowboys can get good value for Gallup before the conclusion of his rookie contract, and he can be a strong No. 2 or borderline No. 1 option in Miami in his contract year (depending on how the Dolphins further address the position this offseason). It’s a potential win-win for both parties, especially with tight end Blake Jarwin set to return for Dallas, presumably leading to more two wide-receiver sets.

Here's his contract...

Trade a very good receiver like Gallup for an unproven, and likely to fail 3rd and 4th rounder? No thanks.

Its too early to tell what Gallup will or won't get. If he has a big time year who knows what he can get at his age. So that's why I Said 3rd or 4th...maybe even 5th.

But even if its a 4th I'm ok with that. My passing attack is a strength. If you take him out of my passing attack I have just a above average attack. This team has no strengths as far as I can tell.

I also am not entirely sold on Cooper with his foot issues.

I'd rather have a year with Gallup than a extra 3rd or 4th rounder.....not even compensation for me.

Cooper's foot issues are a risk. He played all last year. If they think it's a threat to his play, then keeping Gallup makes more sense.

But Cedrick showed some juice with Dak early on, Jarwin is coming back, and Lamb should be given snaps over Gallup anyway. I don't think we lose that much. Gallup got 80%, Lamb 60%. That should flip, and moreso for Gallup, with Jarwin back. And we'll probably *want* to play Wilson more, to prepare him for #3 in 2022. Wiilson, Jarwin, and Lamb are the future. Gallup is a short timer. We have an interest in playing them over Galllup.

The reduced snaps for Gallup will only reduce his market value. Even getting the 4th round comp pick may be hard.

Nobody possesses the go up and get it ability Gallup has. Well....maybe I should say Lamb does but I’m not sure if he’s the deep threat Lamb is quite yet.

Gallup is probably still the best at going up and getting it. Lamb was disappointing with drops this year. Multiple in the end zone. Still, Gallup wasn't as good at getting it as a rookie either.

The WR who *doesn't* drop balls is Cooper. He doesn't have to jump so much, because he's just open. He was low last year too.
Pollard and Zeke at 10%+ is depressing. We gotta fix the short passing game.

I'm not that big on the "go up and get it". It makes highlite plays, but the efficiency is poor, and with league passing efficiency up so high, it's not that worthwhile. Tony and Dez could make it work *even when defenses knew it was coming*. Dak and Gallup aren't near that league. I'll do without the highlites for more separation and YAC.

I'll be happy to give Lamb all of Gallup's jump balls and expect about the same results from Lamb, likely improving to better than Gallup soon enough. Gallup isn't a bum, we just have a lot of other players to switch his targets to without drop off, and he's a short timer, while Lamb is probably here for the next decade.

A mid 3rd and 4th are a *lot* more than a 4th round comp pick, if we get even that.

Gallup and maybe Williams are two guys we might get more than comp pick value for.

A mid 3rd alone is probably worth it for each. We *got* Gallup for his entire rookie contract for an 81st, and now we're being hypothetically offered the 83 and 113 for *1* year of that contract.

If he signs a big deal elsewhere and we don't sign any free agents. Sure.

But recall only the biggest free agent deals land 3rd round compensation and that's again assuming you're inactive there as well.

Trade him. We are over allocated to offense already.

I’m concerned with next season. Gallup is a contributor. Those 3rd and 4th rounders won’t be for next year. And that’s if they hit on them.

When are the Cowboys active? When have they ever signed someone that would effect their draft picks? I want three great receivers. If Gallup walks oh well. I’m not going to be up in arms about losing potential draft capital for him. I’m in win now mode.

Noah and Gallup gone would open two more spots.

If we want to go 3 wide as the base, then we need to replace Gallup. Cooper, Lamb, Jarwin, Schultz, Wilson, Zeke, Pollard. Plenty of guys to throw the ball to, but light at WR. We've got a draft, free agency, and Jonvea too. With *two* WR#1s, the third/backup is a rotational spot.

We lose something with Gallup gone for next year. But we lose him in 2022 anway, and gain mid round 3rd for the next 4 years.

Especially in a year where we are so uncertain about a draft class.
The collegiate talent evaluation was severely stressed due to the shortened season.
Having said that,, there is an open playing field, wide open for NFL scouting departments that have done their due diligence, and are dedicated to their craft of evaluation.
There are going to be some major late round steals in this 2021 draft, and some will get lucky as usual.

I do not get this fascination for 3rd and 4th rounders lol.....I guess its signifies hope and uncertainty. There's just nothing that can convince we are better off next season without Gallup.

Yep...all you can do is hope you are one of the lucky ones because I have a strong feeling there are going to be some game changers later on in the draft that got passed up for whatever reason.

Maybe I am wrong but I don't believe Gallup will be a WR who hits the open market and pulls a huge contract like Cooper.
We need to factor in the fact that if he leaves then we need to pay someone else to be our 1000 yardish WR. Thats not going to free. Any 2/3rd WR in todays game who is worth having is going to demand a certain salary. So unless Gallup comes in unreasonable I would rather pay him knowing what we have in him.

What if we can lock him up for 8m average? Or 10m. If we need to spend 7m or so on another WR then maybe the savings are not so great.

I may be underestimating Gallups value around the league. I just see him as a nice #2 or #3 WR. I can't see any team breaking the bank for Gallup.
No. I think you are right about his value. I think other teams can see that too.

WRs like Gallup are found every draft. I'm not saying he's not a good player. He is. But it seems year after year more second tier WRs are getting drafted. It seems every year there are more 2-4 round WRs becoming good players as rookies.

Teams will pay for number one guys like Cooper, but they can draft complimentary WRs any year.

The Jones boys don’t have enough knowledge to do something like this. He’ll walk at the end of the season for nothing.
