1. What will the Cowboys do with Dak and how will it work out?

Exlusive FT him.

Then try to reach a deal in TC or right after it. Because that is the earliest in time where you know better about his recovery.

2. What should the Cowboys do and what would likely happen if they did?.

Non-Exclusive FT Tag him.

Let him reach out to other teams and let him see what the open market offers. With his major injury we will gamble that there will be no suitor that will pay Dak 35-40 mils a year and give up 2 first round picks also. And we will win that gamble.

That will let his asking price come down.

After that we can still decide if we want to trade him or sign him to a contract that is in our favor.

We should then trade him. And of course to the team that has the two highest first round picks.

Prediction: Jerry will decide he's too old to find another QB and sign Dak to a contract that will set some kind of record. The defense will continue to load up on castoffs and guys who could only have contracts in Dallas. We go 8-8 with Dak throwing for 5k yards and 22 TDs.

Cowboys tag Dak. 2021 is last season as Cowboy. New coach, quarterback in 2022.

Cowboys should and will sign Dak to a long term deal. I don’t believe tagging is an option as it would eat too much our cap. If a deal isn’t reached then a tag and trade is most likely. I’m sure there are a number of teams that would give up multiple high picks for Dak.

Im setting this thread up as a prediction time capsule rather than a comment thread. The rules of the thread are that everyone is allowed a single post where they answer the two questions below. (Mods - please enforce). No commenting or debate on peoples' predictions - this is simply to record the predictions for review - to see who's right in one or two years time.

Please expand on your prediction - some narrative with detail - rather than single line answers.

Questions:

1. What will the Cowboys do with Dak and how will it work out?

2. What should the Cowboys do and what would likely happen if they did?.

I'll go first below.

Couldnt take it seriously after this:

Not sign Dak and allow him to leave. Draft a first round QB plus sign a veteran temporary starter. Cowboys would win at least 1 x SB during MMs current tenure with the young QB. Meanwhile Dak will sign a short term deal elsewhere, not play well and drift out of the league after 2-3 years.

Can someone explain how tagging Dak and not signing him makes any sense? Assuming a salary cap of 180M for the 2021 season, we are currently 19M under the cap. If we tag Dak and do not sign him to a long term contract, we are then 18M over the cap. That puts us in the position of having to restructure a bunch of huge contracts like DLAW and Amari Cooper just to get under the cap. Where is the money coming from to sign free agents and improve the defense?

There is literally no way to improve this roster by letting Dak play on the tag. I don't see it anyway. So, the day Jerry puts the tag on Dak, don't be surprised if Dak's price to sign doesn't increase in proportion to his leverage. He will have all the cards for the cowboys 2021 season at that point. He can literally waive his middle finger at Jerry, make 37M, and look forward to his 2022 pay day on another team.

I suppose the only reason to tag him would be to trade him if there's a team desperate enough out there

We can , in theory, let Dak play on the tag by re-doing Zach and Amari's contracts. But who knows what the plan is...........Jerry in his eternal optimism may just opt for a reboot of last year and hope for a different result.

I think Dak will play 2021 on a one year franchise deal again. Dallas isn't going to increase their contract offer from last offseason and I think Dak will want options in 2022, when his value may be sky high.

I agree with this strategy. Signing a QB coming off a serious injury is risky to begin with. It’s much more risky when you consider we’ll be committing 20% of our cap to him over several years.
I think Dak will get the tag again;however, this time it will be non exclusive, after Dak turns down Jerry offer again. Jerry will come out and state for Cowboys nation that he tried several years to sign him and do to the cost of doing business at this trying time that a deal could not be reached. Jerry will let Todd France find a deal and Jerry will take his picks and move on. Both parties are aware of each other’s views on a deal and neither are willing to budge. I truly believe that Jerry wants to sign Dak, but only at what he is willing to pay.
