The fastest way to improve our D may start with DL

If there is no DT worthy of the #10 pick and Surtain II is available, I would love to see him paired with Diggs. With an improved CW as the enforcer, could be the making of a Legion of Doom.
We don’t have to take a DT early...if we’re going on impact, there’s not a DL with much guaranteed impact for round one. We need help at so many positions I just want to ensure we get some impactful talent at multiple positions.

I truly wish there was a blue chip Defensive tackle that was worth the 10th overall pick.

having a stud in the middle is so sorely needed.

I know I'll have people jump on me for this but, this is why I wish we could just bite the bullet and bring in a proven DT at this point. I don't want to debate the cap and whats there because there is always ways to move money around if it's for a player you believe will be a difference maker.

This draft, as you said, doesn't have that player available in the top 10 because that would be the obvious fix but we can't just go with what we have currently. We need to bring in a few guys and hope to hit on a guy in rounds 2-4.

One other thing, as usual, thanks to @Bobhaze for another solid post that created good discussion. Everyone on the same topic, no shade or hate on anyone, just straight up good football talk.

Cheers to everyone who has contributed to this thread. This is what keeps me kind of hanging around here when there is usually chaos in other threads that makes it feel pointless to even reply in.

You would think common sense logic would apply to a billionaire who is "set" on winning but yet won't fix the defense for what seems an eternity.

I always wonder how some people get rich or make it through life sometimes

The Cowboys can't fix this overnight, but if you believe, as I do, that scheme was part of their issue, I think they can make more immediate progress than some think. Two positions they need to upgrade -- FS and 1T are not high-dollar and do not generally require a 1st round pick. It is a matter if emphasis. They can upgrade while using modest capital -- if they just do it.

The draft seems to line up pretty well for them. There isn't star talent at DT, but there is pretty good depth at 1T. There are a couple of interesting FSs.

If they place an emphasis on filling those positions, they should have the opportunity.

Can they salvage Jaylon and LVE? We will see. How much were they hurt by the scheme and lack of preparation?

It should be an interesting off-season.

I hope picking #10 doesn’t bite us in the butt!
The top LBer and top 2 Corners could be gone right before we pick. Do we dare pick a T at 10?

This team has been trying to fix the defensive line since they got shredded in the 2018 playoffs against the Rams.

@Bobhaze I would start with the simple fixes first.
1) Minimize the offensive turnovers (quit fumbling and throwing interceptions). Don't put the defense in a bad position.
2) Get defensive turnovers. Diggs and Lewis and Wilson seem like they can get turnovers. Find a way for the LBs and DEs to generate some turnovers. Scheme for defensive players to make the splash plays.
3) Learn to blitz better.
4) Get better 3rd down conversion from the offense. Keep the defense off the field as much as possible.
5) Get the offense to score early. The offense has been MIA in the 1st half too many times. Give the defense some breathing room.
6) Score TDs not FGs.

7) Need to find two CBs in the draft or FA.
8) Need to find two DTs in the draft or FA.
9) Need to draft more speedier LBs.
10) Bench players who freelance and don't know their responsibilities. Bench or get rid of the knuckleheads.

The Legion of Doom had the best DLine rotation in the NFL in front of them.

Sure, take Surtain. Whatever, because it simply won't matter until you fix the Dline.

We are now up against the wall once again due to previously poor drafting.

The Cowboys having so many needs at multiple positions make this year’s draft and FA period doubly interesting.
If there ever was a draft to grab some major steals its this 2021.
If there ever was a time to have total faith in your drafting dept its this 2021.
Hard to evaluate in a season that was in shut down mode,, there will be some major steals in this draft for teams that have been paying close attention.

Would love to sign Tomlinson, but he will be a top shelf and probably more than what they want to spend, but I know what your saying you can always come up with the cash...

While I agree, maybe Gallimore can be a start in the right direction.
Rook showed some flashes, and its far more than Hill has shown, but with a blessing, maybe we get decent production out of both.

We all know the old joke- “Why are they called the ‘Allas Cowboys? Because there’s no ‘D’ in Dallas.” And for too long it has been sadly true. But the serious question is, what’s the fastest way to turn this defense around into at least something decent?

The short answer may be to simply improve the defensive line’s play. Why? Let us look at their performance the last two seasons:
  • In the 2020 season last year, the Cowboys finished tied for 20th in the NFL with 31 sacks.
  • They were even worse last year with QB pressures, finishing 25th with just 132.
  • Last year, we ranked 27th in tackles for loss with only 54. We all know how bad this D was against the run, and the 2020 D gave up the most points in franchise history. Ouch.
  • Compare all that to 2019, when Dallas had 8 more sacks than 2020, 17 more pressures and 22 more TFLs. And our defense wasn’t that great in 2019.
The good news is if we can get more aggressive defensively with the front 7, our numbers can improve quickly. For example, with new D coordinator Dan Quinn, I’m hoping we get more aggressive than with Mike Nolan and Rod Marinelli, who almost never blitzed. That needs to change.

How little has this team blitzed?
  • The Cowboys in 2020 blitzed only 23% of the time, the same % as 2019. Last year, we ranked 27th in number of blitzes.
  • Only the Eagles, Bears, Browns, Colts and Chargers blitzed less in 2020.
I realize that merely blitzing more doesn’t guarantee success, but offenses preparing for the Cowboys defense the last few years rarely had to worry about some exotic blitz package coming at them, much less regular pressure. The result was our secondary was often expected to cover receivers far too long.

Dan Quinn has said he wants to “simplify the scheme and play faster and more aggressively”. That should help. But this team also needs to upgrade the talent plus see what we have in Neville Gallimore and Trysten Hill. I expect to see a DL or two drafted although there’s supposedly not much impactful talent in this year’s draft.

Here’s hoping the play of our DL will start the process of making this defense more aggressive on the front end, making it easier on the secondary. Easier said than done of course.
I agree with you Bob. The middle of the defense has been neglected for years but I think it has something to do with Jerry not believing in drafting a DT in the early rounds. It takes time and a few years of losing to build that Dline. Usually the best dline players are taken by the 12th pick and when Dallas is drafting BPA at 16 or 17 they are left with oline. Sometimes you have to trade up to get the player you want if you believe that player is a guy you can build your defense around.

I agree with DL, actually the entire middle of the D, needing to be addressed. I don't think they should just pick whoever is available at #10 to play any position without weighing their value at that pick. I am also a big fan of trading back for more picks and that #10 pick could generate some interest. The Cowboys need to pony up in free agency a get a player or two who are building blocks.

I think we've seen it time and time again. You build from the ball outward. Unfortunately BPA has to be a factor. We need a lot. DT, LB, Safety, CB...

I'm so tired of watching our LBs. As much as I'd like a DT or a LB we may be forced to take a CB based on BPA. Just let's not get silly and draft another Taco. Hopefully we can get Dak situated and take advantage of FA. Before someone roast me because we have no cap left, we spend on half a dozen scrubs every off season. How about we get one or two legit players instead?
