Our team and our situation right now this guy would change this defense from one of the worst in the NFL to one of the best in the NFL. Known for his run stopping he had a ton of sacks last year and we would finally have someone who could consistently collapse the pocket. The biggest question is, can we afford him after we sign or tag Dak?

LEONARD WILLIAMS
One of the surest bets in the class, Williams has graded between 70.0 and 82.0 in all six years of his career. Run defense is his calling card, as he ranks in the 86th percentile in PFF run-defense grade since entering the league and with his best work coming as a B and C gap defender. Williams is an average pass-rusher and even with a career-high 13 sacks this season, he’s yet to break a 72.0 pass-rush grade for his career. Still, Williams has been one of the most valuable interior defensive linemen in the league since 2015, and his level of consistency is a plus for potential suitors.

Contract Analysis: Williams was traded from the New York Jets to the New York Giants in 2019 and had to move his locker across Metlife Stadium. He may be moving much further than that after the 2020 season unless he can agree to a long-term extension with the Giants coming off the franchise tag. A second franchise tag for Williams would cost the Giants $19,351,200 (120% of his current tag) and isn’t out of the question. That number also provides a solid floor for Williams in negotiations in terms of an average per year amount.

Prediction: Panthers sign Williams for four years, $80 million ($20M APY): $47.5M total guaranteed, $32.5M fully guaranteed at signing.

Even though he is what this DL needs, he will not be coming here. Not for that type of $$$.
We can dream though only to wake up to the nightmare of this defense.

Probably looking for 20 million a year, no thanks. I’d rather have Tomlinson for 13-15 mil per year.

What I think and hope will happen is the Giants GM ends up over paying for Williams because he will look like a bigger moron than he is if Williams walks. Their GM gave up a 3rd and a conditional 4th (or something close to that) 1/3rd of the way through their losing season as basically a rental because he was going to be a FA at the end of that season anyways. Then they couldn’t reach an agreement and the Giants had to tag him last year. Lol, what an idiot, Jerry makes him look good!

I could see their GM doing the same with Barkley as Jerry did with zeke, overpay to save face. Fingers crossed that’s exactly what happens.

He's a prime candidate of a guy you don't pay big money too. I believe a big money free agent's success is dependent on how they came into the league. Leonard Williams has been an underachiever for the most part. Maybe it was a bad fit with the Jets but I personally can't spend big money on the 1-2 year wonder.

It is difficult to envision the Giants allowing Williams to test free agency, but if they do, he would instantly become among the most highly sought-after players available.

Williams is essentially a lite version of prime J.J. Watt, and he is about five years younger than Watt is right now.

There are some (non-first rounders) big body guys in this years draft that would be cheaper. And when I say big bodies I mean 6'4" 300 pounds or bigger.

Tedarrell Slaton - 3rd
Xavier Kelly - 4th
Isaiah Loudermilk - 5th
Jaquan Jones - 5th
Aubrey Solomon - 7th
Phil Hoskins - UDRFA
Jack Heflin - UDRFA

A big and physical front seven will definitely help.

Lol wut?! JJ Watt was a ruthless and relentless, and damn near unstoppable pass rusher in his prime. He was a force all by himself no matter what the offense called, no matter the scheme. Leonard Williams is an athletic, big bodied unachiever with one good pass rush season looking for a huge pay day. His game isn't remotely similar to JJ Watt, not even as a "lite" comparison.

Williams is a solid player, and he'd be a good fit in Dallas, but he's about to get PAID in a very shallow free agent market. I agree with an earlier poster about going Tomlinson over this guy. They're both run stoppers, but one is going to get paid like a pass rusher. Don't do it, Jerry.

I'd say the Giants make the effort to keep Williams, which may make Tomlinson available.

They are in a terrible cap situation. If they lock up Williams that will be all they can do. They are -3 million I believe right now

That's without making any moves though right?

Correct. But I’m read and article they are going to have to move multiple guys Solder, Zietler, Tate and a few others just to afford Williams.

It’s going to leave Tomlinson out or crush the entire teams depth

SLATON is someone we should keep an eye on. He's slowly moving up draft boards. The tape on him is actually really good. Great run stuffer and holds the point in the trenches. Disruptive.

In his prime JJ was the most dominant player in the league
I like Williams but he’s not in the same league as JJ in his prime or Aaron Donald today
JJ is a first ballot HOF player
Tomlinson is a viable option and I’m a guy who would rather have a couple of good players in FA and fill out the rest of your roster with rookies and UDFA
We don’t need 6 mediocre vets in FA
We need a couple of really good players who can make an impact
I think Tomlinson at that position fits the bill

I'd 100% rather have Williams at 20 mill than Tomlinson at 15 mill. One is a game changer and the other is a jag that you can replicate with a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Thats just lazy. He's been one of the most productive runstopping DTs in the league since he was drafted and now posts 11.5 sacks last season. Look like I said I'm not a huge fan of paying big money but I would rather have him than Jaylon Smith and Tyrone Crawford which is equally the same $. Since we probably won't have enough money to get him I would love to see us target Christian Barmore either at 10 or in a small trade down.
