I’m sure they’ll do a bunch of restructures to free up 15-20 million for free agency. Are there 2-3 quality defensive free agents they could look at and now afford that would be a bridge until the likely high influx of rookies gets up to speed?

Who can we afford or who will the Joneses get?

We can afford three high-quality defensive free agents because of restructures and the way contracts are drawn up. We will get three lower-quality defensive free agents because of the Joneses' approach to free agency.

My belief remains that we will pull from players who have previously played for Quinn but either are getting long in tooth or have injury questions. My picks are CB Richard Sherman, S Damontae Kazee and LB K.J. Wright, although both Sherman and Wright might end up being a little too expensive for our tastes. Kazee coming of injury might be affordable in the bargain bin.

More "kicking the can down the road," as usual. This, and we wonder why the cap always comes back to bite us in the end. I guess it's tough for rich guys to maintain a budget, perhaps. I think Stephen would like to but maybe Jerry is compelled to step in and "go for the gusto." Just a hunch. o_O

We'll have to see how the Dak deal is structured. I heard there are 2 voidable years so this is really a 6 years deal as far as prorating the bonus is concerned. But I also heard the deal is frontloaded. I have a feeling we will be bargain basement shopping again in free agency.

There's, apparently, something to the old adage that "some things never change." ;)

I may be in the minority but I kind of like Sherman for a safety spot or backup CB, only on the cheap tho. I don't wnat to pay a lot for him and hopefully he wants to be with his old coach. To be honest I don't want Sherman's play as much as his cockiness and swagger. For this defense to get better we need a Jay Ratliff, Charles Haley, Leon Lett, Alonzo Spellmen kind of guy. And what I mean by that is we need some crazies on our defense. We need some nastiness. We have too many male models on this team. Too many Zoolanders that care more about being really really ridiculously good looking. For goodness sakes, our defense is nicknamed after a boy band from the 80's. Charles Haley would have punched DLaw in the face for naming the defense after a boy band.

We need some attitude, nastiness, crazy guys that people are scared of. We need Greg Lloyd, Ray Lewis personalities and less of Jaylon Smith personalities. We need players that the offense is going to be worried about fighting them. Now we got other team's offensive players that want to buy sunglasses off our defense.
That was funny!

He counts for $22.2 million this year...according to most reports. That's 15 less than the tag would have cost the team. We can restructure several deals to easily free up money (Martin and Cooper).
Martin and Cooper are the guys to restructure. They're the keepers. Some people want to dump Cooper because he's not extroverted enough to suit their tastes, but he's the guy who makes the offense go. He's the guy teams have to double, and can still produce while being doubled.

Dlaw is good but he's not making as much of a difference for the defense.

Martin at 31 would be old for most positions, but interior olinemen age pretty well.

Kicking the can down the road only hurts if you have to cut the guys you’re restructuring or they retire like what happened with Aikman and Irvin and then Romo.

Then the money due balloons up all at once. Eagles are getting this with Wentz this year.

We don’t necessarily get to count the 15 million saved plus the restructures. Since Dak wasn’t under contract we only had like 25 mil in space to begin with. Now with his cap hit being 22.2 we have around 2.8 I think. So the restructures get us around 20 and then you have to account for draft picks.

Dallas won't do anything in fa they never do but the defense needs a lot. Roll with the young ones at dt this season then go from there. Need 3 new lbs. Need a ss need a cb. Oline can still be great but aging and falling apart. Lots of work to be down over the next 2-3 seasons to make this team a contender.

Honestly, with restructures the Cowboys could play for anyone they wanted.

Heck, they could take a hard look at Van Noy and eat a cut or preferably cheap trade on Jaylon Smith if they wanted (not that anyone would take on Smith's contract).

But, I don't think they'll make any major plays. I doubt they would even if they had more cap room. Not their MO in modern FA.

There'll be a lot of cuts and good FA's available because of the 2020 cap but I don't see the Cowboys as players even if they could be one.

Improvement will be as it has been, about the draft and about shopping the bargain bin.

They tried to bring in bigger DT's through free agency last year. Hopefully this year they use the draft to do that. No need in paying a DT big money in this economy.

The way I look at it....draft three DB's with your first three picks then draft two big body DT's in the later rounds. And just pray our OLine can stay healthy this year.

Yep let's kick that can down the road even farther as it has worked so well for us in the past...

But you know we won't.....we don't operate that way. We will do what we've always done. We will fill holes with reasonably priced vets before the draft and let it come to us.

Probably. But one player on d, no matter how good, isn't doing anything next year.

We all know we won’t do anything in free agency. Last big free agent was Brandon Carr.

this is why no one should be upset at Dak’s money.

1- 7 million dollars a year isn’t going to stop us from signing anyone

2- we don’t sign anyone anyway.

3- really no one on this team coming up to FA is worthy of a big contract

Here’s my list of Defensive FAs we can now afford:
A) Dexter Coakley
B) Roy Williams
C) Bobo the clown
D) Macafee/Kaspersky anti virus
E) that’s about it
On a serious note, just go get one.
We always try and fill voids with the Ha Ha Clintons and the Poes.
Just quit wasting the money and the time Jerry.
Just go get Tomlinson and shore up this massive interior exposure.

It’s still 160 mil, if it helps us this year it just means it hurts us more later.

i can’t disagree which is why I said I’m not a fan of him getting the 40m plus a year value,

but if he plays well and the cap goes up it’s not going to be terrible

This will probably be a defensive heavy draft. .
Unfortunately this is a weak defensive draft class
As long as they take Kyle Pitts at 10 if he drops then reach for all the defense you want.
