If our FO consistently believes that they can field a solid defense without putting much capital in the interior DL and S positions, we may have a long wait for a defense that can win in the playoffs.
Hopefully today was an indicator that Jerry Jones' hatred for Safety's has come to an end.

Legit has been a need for almost 20 years.

I think they are upgrades to what the current Dline is. I see alot of negative responses on this thread, but thats just todays CZ for ya. Everybody cries if it isnt perfect.

Not me. Imma stay optimistic, sit back and watch how this all plays out. So far... improvements. Gotta love that.

Watkins-I believe he fills that 4T LE role in our base defense. This spot in Quinn's scheme is more like a 3-4 DE that anchors and holds up multiple blockers. He certainly can play a little 1T in a pinch as well.

Urban-another 3-4 Defensive Lineman who has starting experience. Think he fills that Tyrone Crawford Role. Can play inside/outside, known more as a high motor run defender.

Basham-might be the Aldon Smith replacement and an upgrade over Armstrong as the #3 DE. Many think he was not used correctly as a stand up Edge rusher, where he is better suited as a down pass rusher. More of an upside pick.

These are more role player, rotational types that improve our depth. Behind the starters, we either have young prospects or undrafted fa's. These moves were necessary and could make a difference in the long run.

I would bet Watkins doesn’t make the team. Basham will be a decent rotational DE. It’s too bad they chose him over Smith. Urban is the best of the lot. I think he has a chance to start. Will definitely help with the run. I still think DT is one of their top 3 picks in the draft.

I agree, still believe they will add a NT. I don't know why so many are saying Watkins won't make the team. He is going to factor in as a base defender, to help against the run.

Don't agree with your comment about replacing Smith. Very likely right now that Dallas wants a multi year, affordable deal. At this point, he'd likely prefer a bigger long term deal or the chance to be an free agent again next year.

He's getting a chance to shop himself and establish the market. Doubt he ends up elsewhere. Guys in recovery value stability and are grateful to the team that gave them a chance.
Aldon Smith had a so so season. Outside of that Seattle game, where they had a terrible line, he didn't have much success at all, even against the run.

Barmore, s

Barmore, Shelvin, Wilson are showing as the top 3 1 techs and they have them all in the 46 to 67 overall rankings.

So you are hoping for our 2nd round pick to be used on one of these guys?
Shelvin/Wilson are more 3rd rounders, Barmore gets drafted top 25 due to his rush abilities.

I see McNeil rated 4th and Togaia rated 10th for DT's.
McNeil is the best 1T in the class, he offers some rush abilities as well. He is in the 2nd-3rd rd range. Togaia is more of a two down player who appears to be a 3rd rd player.

Basham can upgrade depth. I have little use for Watkins and even less for Urban.

If you told me they were going to add 3 defensive linemen in FA I would have certainly hoped for more than this. It's another half hearted, half bleeped attempt when there are real dire issues.

Urban might be a decent piece in a rotation. I just don't know what that looks like. If it looks like what Crawford did, then you get a wash.

But Basham and especially Watkins are literally camp bodies.

Watkins will not make the final roster. I would bet the house on it.

The talk seems to be that we're picking up role players that aren't valued much in most schemes, but fit the new scheme. A defense that *effectively* uses types of players that other teams don't want is a way to build a good defense that doesn't cost as much.

You can get a better result with players who aren't as good *overall* by finding limited roles for them where they are better than the overall better players.

You should only *pay* for *really really good* starters if you're going to *play* them for a lot of snaps. DLaw only got 60% snaps.

This looks like an actual *defensive philosophy* of building the best team under cap constraints than simply "find us the best players and we'll use them". I kinda like it.
Good post.

Hope is the word for me. You need to spend around 8-10 million to get a legit NT. I dont see them doing that. Its also not a deep position in the draft and I dont see them using our first on it. So unless they use the 2nd rounder there I dont see him being effective enough.

Second or third round is the likely spot to get one, unless we trade back in the first. Guess Barmore would fall in that 20-25 range based on the talking heads but I’m not sold that he is a first round player.

Seems a good draft for a quality 1T through 2-4, but a bad draft for 3Ts in the first round, where the top 3Ts would usually be.
Given that we have Gallimore and Hill still on their rookie contracts, maybe we hold off this year on a 3T and get a quality 1T instead.
Getting another 3T is making a logjam of 3Ts who need snaps to developed and can't all get them. If we're *upgrading* on Gallimore and Hill, then fine, but if we're not upgrading we're wasting the pick.

My thought they signed defensive players so they will go offense in draft Maybe that TE that most know about
no they still need a LB, CB, S and well still a future DL but the DL being weak in this years Draft is why they got 3 DL so far....

no way they take offense at 10 they would trade down 3-4 spots before they do that and still get a corner and S or LB because of the trade..
I concur with 'blueblood70' - the Cowboys will parlay Pitts falling into their lap at #10 to negotiate with some team(s) who really want that TE. Get that 15 -20 pick plus a 2nd, then use that lower 1st to select S Moehrig or CB Horn.
BUT - if OT Slater is still there at 10....??

You think either of those two third rounders can start from day 1? The benefit of a top 10 pick.

So McNeil in the 2nd round?
