Some of the comments ab Xavier Woods is ridiculous and honestly ignorant... which is more of an indicator of the fanbase than it is of Woods. I’m not here to insinuate he was irreplaceable, but a bit of appreciation should be shown.
Woods first few years playing under Marenilli’s “single-high” safety scheme, he was showing real promise for a 6th Rd pick, even earning NFC Defensive player of the week honors at one point. For what it’s worth, PFF noted the following after 2019...
-“Xavier Woods forced an incompletion on 80.0% of his red-zone targets this season – that's more frequent than any other safety.”
Then Mike Nolan happened. And I don’t have to remind you that the entire defense was garbage! That said, playing the single high safety role is dependent on the other 10 guys in front of you to handle their duties also.. that didn’t happen.
Ironically enough, the defense Xavier was ascending in, has presumably returned under Dan Quinn’s guidance. Could Woods have continued improving had it not been for the debacle of 2020? I suppose we’ll never know. One thing we’ll surely find out.. is Dan Quinn’s familiarity with Kazee (coming off an Achilles injury no less) enough to provide significant improvements? I digress.
Woods had his warts and we can definitely improve IF Dallas decides to spend the necessary draft capital to actually make dramatic improvements. Woods has earn criticism, but he’s also earned some credit. He’s definitely not trash as some have spewed. At the end of the day, I suspect he will never be spectacular, but he’ll probably continue to give meaningful production for another team that values DL talent.
