I thought our base was a 5-2-4. Been that way for so long.

From snap counts, we averaged 4.85 CBs on the field per play. DL, 3.15 to 4.21 depending on if Aldon/Armstrong are counted as LB or DL.

We just didn't play with 5 line as our base.

Alrighty, then -- let's see if Quinn's version of a 4-3 & 3-4 mix really works, as this defense attempts to adjust to it.

Let's actually hope it's a radical departure from the mixed-up and hopelessly confused defense we had last year!

Exactly, I prefer to hope that it all works out rather than trash it now. If it fails the trashing option will still be available;)

Do they even have four linebackers in the team?

Well DLAW and Gregory would be the OLBs. Jaylon and LVE inside so yes. I think 3-4 is a bad idea for this team though Gallimore and Hill may be ok ends, but no nose tackle. Plus on top of all the confusion need to run one primary system.

I don't think it would be a typical 3-4. I think Quinn wants to put a big end out there on some downs, so technically in doing that, it would be easy to shift into a 3-4 front.

You're right but Yeeeeeaaaaaaah, I want to play my $20 + million a year DE more than a JAG for some strange reason.

Lawrence will play plenty. He has to come off the field sometimes. I just hope it's a little less than it seemed like it was last year.

Nolan was MM's buddy for quite some time according to MM. Now MM was quoted saying the same about Quinn.

If Quinn was so much better, why did they waste time by bringing in Nolan last season?!
Probably because Quinn was a HC for the Falcons until October of 2020. But MM's buddy is actually DB coach Joe Whitt, not Quinn.

I can't wait to see what a "tight blend" actually looks like -- sure sounds like a funky word thingy to me, folks.
I'll certainly be hoping Dan Quinn does a much better job of explaining it than what Mike Nolan did last year!

I'm having flashbacks of how the defense that Dan Quinn teaches is definitely simpler than last year's version of it.

Why is anyone still talking 4-3 or 3-4, when the base personnel package in the league is Nickel against a base offensive 11 personnel?

I see a Big Nickel version of 4-2-5, with an in the box SS rather than a CB. That's our base.
This has become a common refrain.
But it's just misunderstanding the discussion.

There is a 4-2-5 base nickel and a 3-3-5 base nickel.
The down number is still different.

If your SS is a box SS/LB in the 4-2-5 then you are in fact in a 4-3.
It mirrors High school and college.
The scheme isn't so much changing as the players are just smaller and faster to cover more of the field.

Why do players care? Technique and responsibility. Defensive players have very few years to earn a living so seldom want to play out of position or in a way that lowers their value.
A guy who has been drafted and trained to shoot gaps does not want to now 2 gap and read.

A tight blend is supposed to mean less substitutions, Neal is supposed to be the tight blend I guess.

Saw an interview with Peter King the other day. He said something to the effect that the Dallas defense was the hardest hit unit in the NFL by Covid, meaning that they made a mistake trying to completely overhaul the system in an offseason that was all virtual. it wasn't until they simplified things that the defense started playing better and forcing turnovers. I think the plan is to build off of what was done at the end of last season. He also said that Quinn is Mr. Positivity and that he will build up the players to have them believing in the system and their abilities. With a normal off season, I think this defense will be better out of the gate and will continue to improve as the season goes along. Probably won't be a top 10 defense, but will be much better than they showed for much of last year.
