There are the obvious answers so I'll bring up one mention in that article. Punt Returner. I've been underwhelmed by all the different punt returners the Cowboys have had the last few years. I don't expect to see a 30 or 40 yard return each game. But give me someone with some speed and elusiveness to get a decent return. Anything besides just standing there and fair catching. We all saw first hand how badly that can go. And for crying out loud don't let the ball hit the ground where it can roll for another 10-20 yards. That is like football 101 stuff.

Corner for short and long term needs.
Defensive tackle is TBD long term.
Safety is "set" short term but long term it's still an unknown. Does Wilson repeat or disappear? Does Kazee do enough to stick around?
Linebacker for long term for sure. Short term we have Neal, LVE and Smith. 2 of the 3 are UFA in 2022 and Smith isn't that good.

I have a few names that would fill holes and none of them would break the bank:
  1. The aforementioned Danny Shelton at defensive tackle
  2. Blidi-Wreh-Wilson at cornerback
  3. Keleche Osemele as the new starting left guard
  4. Taylor Gabriel at WR

1T for gosh sakes!

1 tech:
We're going in with the same ole failing dog day approaching trend of years past. Still Signing up budget 1 techs that maybe/seem more fit for rotation duty (at best) than
a bona fide high regarded difference making starter. (ala Dalvin Thompson, Malcolm Brown, Johnathan Hankings)
It's more of the typical Antwann Woods, Chris Covington, E.Akou, Cauran Reed, etc. bargain movement of 1 tech bodies that has us street hunting during the season because we're desperately bad.

Cornerback - need a highly regarded, bookend core starter opposite Diggs. Anthony Brown starting outside just ain't happening. And Lewis would be even worse.

Linebackers - fragile LVE,.. liability Jaylon, ..a vastly undersized safety converted to LB ..and so who's else is left ?

heir apparent OT -plus developing OT in 2nd-3rd rd, can be back up injury prone Tyron, and Collins return could be iffy; no more Steele.!! )

vet backup QB - seems aging, injury prone Alex Smith left that's available on street; if not Alex, another return with Gale Gilbert

CB - need an upgrade opposite Diggs

DT - obvious this position needs an upgrade of talent. Urban and Watkins ain't it.

FS - I like the signing of Kazee but he worries me from a health perspective

MLB - I like Neal as a creative signing but this team lacks a real MLB. LVE and Smith aren't that type of LB.

DE - I think we could use a raw athletic guy behind Lawrence and Gregory to develop. Basham, Anae, etc. these guys are limited players that provide some nice depth but that's it.

I believe everyone of those will be fixed via the draft. Some solid talent out there in those positions

Sign Geno Atkins, KJ Wright, and Richard Sherman, and suddenly this defense doesn't look so horrible heading into the draft.

Sounds much like last year's plan of old declining guys.
All those aging guys, i'd have to have as limited role players while the younger heir apparent take more of the steering wheel and front line..

I'd only considered Sherman as a converted FS, but that FS role has been filled per FA.
Now would only considered Sherman as a cheap 1 yr rental, vet move per post-draft, should we not draft a regarded CB early rounds.

Sean Lee (unless you count that safety from the Falcons)
Blake Bell
Chido Awuzie
Xavier Woods (unless you count that guy from the Falcons)
Joe Thomas
Andy Dalton
Aldon Smith

And with how bad our defense was hopefully upgrades at those postions.

You aren't pulling 4 starting caliber talents out of this draft unless you get lucky. And DT isn't strong for high end talents. There might not be a DT to go in the first 20-25 picks depending on what happens with Barmore.

Safety isn't exactly high on talent either outside of Moehrig and some mocks have him as the first S off the board in the early 2nd round.

Now if you need a QB or a WR, this is the draft for that.
