I was a young man when Roger retired. I remember having a hard time with that announcement. I even asked my dad if Roger was allowed to do that. I couldn't imagine #12 not being our QB.

I wasn't born yet. I do still remember Aikman announcing his retirement though. That was the end of an era for me.

March 31st: On this day in 1980, after 11 seasons with the Cowboys, Roger Staubach announced his retirement at a Texas Stadium press conference. Roger Staubach, with his wife Marianne at his side, choked up when speaking of Coach Landry.

I can still remember a lot of that speech by heart. And I still get a little chocked up thinking about it. Yep, I am a geek.

would guess 75% of the people posting here never got to see him play. I feel bad for them. No player in Cowboys history is more responsible for the team popularity than him. Never be another like him.
'RG12' - I am one of those in your 25%. However, I immediately disagreed with your opinion about Staubach being the most influential player creating the Cowboys popularity. No doubt - his football story from HS - College - Pros - is legendary; but his Dallas Cowboys career is intertwined with that of a number of great teammates that wowed me with their play to continually strive for the NFL Championship.

I wish he did this on April 1st, 1980. Then yelled April Fools!!!!!!!!!!

But Danny White did well with 3 straight NFC Championship games which the Arlington Jonesboys have not seen in 25 years.
